What are your all's thoughts on Christians "swearing"? I've actually pondered this for a while.

The way I look at it, I don't because I know my parents wouldn't really enjoy it. So while I'm under their roof, I need to respect their wishes. They do pay for me, after all.

I mean, sure, the bible does have stuff about corrupt language, but let's look at this from the 21st century. The words "hell" and "damn" are in commercials, something people of all ages watch, and nothing is really thought of it. So I don't really know if it is considered "corrupt". Because, by definition, corrupt is "to change from good to bad in morals, manners, or actions". Does it really apply to the 21st century as bad manners or actions?

My next point is that how different is it saying "I freaking hate" versus the other, obvious one. Sure, freaking isn't a "swear" word, but because sinning is "a condition of the heart, the mind, and “the inner man” ", how different is it? My Youth Leader and some other kids in the church have told me that this is incorrect, but I honestly think it's ignorance.

Hmm, language depends on the situation. I use a different language with my grandparents than when I'm with my parents/sisters, and something completely different when I'm with my friends, where I can be both be serious, sarcastic (some would probably say pretty mean, but it depends on the situation) to completely childish.

I wouldn't really swear much in front of my parents because it's really not a very appropriate way to articulate your point. With friends, or just alone, on the other hand, I don't really care much about it, and say whatever that's appropriate to the situation, really.

I don't see how hell is a swear word though. Or damn, for that reason. It's a bit different from fuckfucketytfuckfuckfuck, if you get my point.

Frankly I see nothing wrong with saying fuck, shit, bitch, bastard, etc. I reserve 'cunt' for special occasions. Swearing is only added vocabulary, sentence enhancers. I like to pepper my posts with bad language because it gives my posts some well deserved character.

I don't think a staunch Christian swearing is a bad thing, but people believe in different things and follow a different set of rules. So, swear if you want to. And if you don't want to then don't bow to peer pressure - stick to your guns.

I like swearing. Swearing makes me seem cool and approachable to others.

Well, I only started swearing about a year ago, and I rarely do it. I only really swear when I'm very frustrated or stressed, because using words that society deem profane are good ways to relieve stress, in my eyes.

From a Christian perspective, I have a friend who will be entering Seminary after college, and she swears like a sailor. Now, this is a person who reads the Bible and interprets it on a daily basis as preparation for seminary school, and by her interpretation, swearing is absolutely fine. Not to mention that she supports gay rights as well, and actively tries to get Christians to interact with people of other religions. I think she'll make a great pastor.

I am Catholic and I personally was raised to avoid swearing so I never really do it. There's a lot of verses in the Bible that says it's corrupt and harmful to the causes of Christ and it's hard to spread God's word if you use them. There are some situations where it doesn't fit to use swears too. I don't think it's necessary to use the F word in every situation you just to use the f-word or to curse in front of your family or grandparents.


That's just me though. While it may bother me a bit, if you're fine with it, do it.
