My friend lent me his Pokemon Gold and I have been having a lot of fun playing it. I prefer the feel of the Gen 2 over the remakes. So how did you guys feel about Gold, Silver, and Crystal?
It's great to have these new features that became staples to the franchise, but its level curve is horrible compared to its predecessor (The highest level of wild Pokemon are their lvl 60's, but the highest level of wild Pokemon in G/S/C are their lvl 40's). The gym rosters are also questionable (Chuck's signature Pokemon shouldn't be a Gen 1 Pokemon. The Johto Pokemon were completely overshadowed by the Kanto Pokemon, and the only Dark available in the story mode is Umbreon (No Murkrows and Houndours near Goldenrod City). There isn't a lot of side-quests post-E4.
The games were amazing but after playing gen 4 and gen 5, I am pretty reluctant to play them again.
That's the only generation I had the chance to play, so I'm biased.
I havent played HG/SS but as a youngster I definitely enjoyed the hell out of them. I especially liked that they started mixing types, and even adding new types. The variables of day/night time were awesome as well as happiness evolutions as well as breeding. My favorite thing, I think, was getting to travel back and forth between johto and kanto
I can't wait for the new games, I'm gonna fill my team roster with Gen. 2's to watch them battle with the newer graphics :D
My personal thought on the gen 2. was it was awesome to accrire to it I really enjoyed it.
In my opinion gen 2 isn't the best: there are some interesting Pokemon, but I don't like it very much. I prefer other generations, like the forth or the third!
Gen 2 was my favourite, johto is my fave region!
i'm very partial to gen 2; crystal is tied with emerald for my favorite pokemon game. what i think i miss most about it is the sense of boundless exploration that it gave me as a young boy: like, that feeling when you find mt. silver on your own and somehow make your way up to red after playing the first game... you don't really feel that with any other games in the series in my opinion. i'm probably being blinded by sentimentality, but i never experienced that feeling with another game. ruby and sapphire were nice, but i initially spurned them because of the backwards incompatibility. after that i sought out spoilers on the internet, which probably explains why i don't feel like i'm exploring when i'm playing them. oops. the internal batteries to all of my gen 2 games have died out though, and i currently don't have the means to replace the battery... :tear:
all that being said, gsc wasn't without its flaws — the level curve is egregious, and it's very difficult to be at a reasonable level with a full team of six pokemon after a certain point (i'm usually at 37-39 by the time i reach the elite four). it also can't be forgotten that half of the johto gym leaders didn't actually have johto pokemon, which is also a foible of the second-generation pokemon games. kanto being virtually bereft of all its points of interest was also unfortunate: having a withered second region was nice for nostalgic purposes, though it didn't seem to have much to offer aside from johto pokemon (a plurality of which aren't actually in johto?????). hgss rectified some or most of these things, but that's gen 4. the pokemon revealed in generation 2 are as a whole my favorites, but i have mixed feelings about the games.
