During Shinji's run on the show many people were expecting to see Shinji at some point cry or even get really angsty for a bit. With the closest to this being his rage during the Jindai battle, do you think that this makes Shinji more interesting or that seeing him cry may have added something to him?
Personally I really like this detail on Shinji since it shows experimentation on part of the creators during a time when everyone is putting more and more reliance on backstory and angst to create characters. Plus (since I believe this is something that the creators decided to do from the start) it's meant that other areas of Shinji's character have been shown often in more interesting ways.
A lot of people do tend to think of Paul as the really angsty emo character, and perhaps internally, he has to deal with a lot of emotional turmoil, but I definitely don't see him as the type to break down in public. Especially not in front of Ash.
In a way, I'm glad that he didn't show his weak side that often, since the "deconstruction" of these types of characters are usually done pretty drastically. The subtlety in his development definitely made him out to be a unique character :)
That's not to say that I didn't wish for him to cry every once in a while during his run, but I'm a sadist hahah XD
I think paul should be man enough to cry in public but he wasn't given any thing to cry over really
