Since a statewide smoking ban has been passed for Michigan, I'd like to talk about it.
Personally, I'm very much for it. I think it's a really good idea. Some people might say it's not. Well, that's what I want to discuss here.
First of all, it's great that non-smokers can go to any restaurant or bar because they don't allow smoking. I like the idea of clearing the air for everyone. I mean I think it'd do the smokers good as well so they aren't smoking as much. It's good to see chain smokers taking a break for a while. It really concerns me to see people smoking that much.
But then there are smokers who are against this. They're upset that their freedom has been taken away. Well, yes, smoking is a freedom in a sense, but think about the non-smokers. They're getting sick from what's being puffed at them all day. Do you think about them? Do you care if they're getting sick so that you can continue your addiction? They also whine that they can't go to the bar now and talk to their friends and have cigarettes or cigars. Do you honestly *have* to smoke to be social? I mean for people who've smoked for a while, I don't think it's pleasant that the person you're talking to starts hacking really bad and then has to spit up. That is so gross.
For the smokers who do care and don't smoke in public with or without a smoking ban, I commemorate you. I think it's great that you're considerate enough of other people that you'd just not smoke around others. When watching a report about the smoking ban, some restaurants have experienced great feedback from both non-smokers and smokers. I like it when smokers do at least keep an open mind.
Now for the technical stuff. The stuff that people go, "Wait a minute! If you ban smoking in public..what about this and that?" Well, there are lots of pollutants in the air besides just cigarettes. There are cars, wood stoves, house fires, burning debris, and all kinds of stuff. Those can all be bad to a degree as well, but you're not generally in an enclosed space when these things are going off. When you go to a restaurant and it's just blue from smoke, that's all you're breathing in. At least when you're outside, stuff like this isn't generally as harmful but they are also bigger than cigarettes. Like there is a lot more exhaust that comes from a car than smoke from a cigarette. There are days when there are low clouds in the sky so the exhaust gets trapped and it's really hazy outside. So yeah, that's really harmful too. Luckily car manufacturers are doing something about that and making hybrid cars. So even though there are a lot more pollutants in the sky besides cigarette smoke, I think banning smoking indoors is honestly a good move and does everyone good.
So, what do you guys think? Yay or nay? And why?
Honestly, I don't get why some people drags out the "there's too much pollution in the air"-thing. So what? I mean, removing one of the factors that contribute to that pollution, namely smoking, is a bad thing? If they're really that aware of air pollution, then why are they reacting at all?
Generally banning smoking on all outdoor areas where people move (like streets for instance) would be better. It's already illegal to smoke in restaurants anyways, but not if you sit outside though. Slightly counter-productive, yes, but it's way better than nothing.

but some businesses like bars need to have smoking aloud. But if we enforced that we needed proof of their long time addiction in order to smoke. meh I don't have enough time right now to elaborate on my views, but i will edit this later.
I lost a few people to cigarettes.. and I would love to try and help people with the problem.
I wish such a ban would be passed in Washington...
A ban has been passed here in Wisconsin.
Это очень грандиозный случай! Мы rejoice с феиэрверками и водочкой! : D
