That Operation Tempest hype bullshit is really screwing them over now, isn't it? They've already burned the "This is the end of the Rocket-Dan" bridge, so what's left? Waving their arms and shout "FOR REALZ YOU GUYZ WE'RE TOTALLY SERIOUS THIS TIME!!1!1!!1!"? Because nobody's going to believe them after the last time.
Seems to me like we'll get a mix of Comedic and Serious TR in the future, kinda like how they were in ep002, with only a touch more serious. they will still blast off though, can't wait for bw109 in English, just to prove it.
Again though, there's no way in hell that they'd leave the series for good. Hiatuses maybe, but not departure for good, sorry, but that's completely out of the question, no two ways about it.
I still have my doubts about that with both the series spending a lot of time in Kanto and a Team Rocket finale. If they were interested in making a finale for them, why did they bother to hype up the Meloetta two parter as their final mission? Why not save that for this supposed finale where they are in Kanto when it would actually make sense? Although, there probably is a better chance that they'll be in Kanto for a chuck of episodes more than Team Rocket leaving.Originally Posted by The Fighting Misty
So you really think they're just going to transition from the last BW ep to the next gen with nothing major happening with TR at all? Just stay the same serious TR with the same two (or is it four now?) BW Pokemon next gen?
I really don't see it. I look at Brock in DP, and Misty in Johto, and compare them to TR now...it feels the same. They're just lingering on till the gen ends since the writers don't get rid of characters until the tail-end of a saga.
Unlike those examples, the Team Rocket trio still seem like popular characters. They had the radio show and the Secret Live show, despite their fewer appearances in BW. I know that the voice actors did it because they weren't happy with their fewer appearances in BW, or at least I think that was the case, but I don't think that they would have done it if they weren't still popular characters. If they were just lingering on, then why did they make such a big deal about that Operation Tempest mission as their final one? Why not save that kind of promotion for the end of the series when it would have made sense and when people would have bought it completely? I'm not saying that it's impossible for Team Rocket to leave. It's still entirely possible since they aren't the main stars of the series and they have had fewer appearances, but I just don't think it's likely to happen, especially after how the trio are still popular characters.Originally Posted by The Fighting Misty
That's not something i would call writers not having interest keeping someone just because they don't have choice.
I can agree about Brock in DP though, although they still gave him some notable focus there and development to some extent by going through ferments not being sure what he wants to do prior to decision of becoming doctor.
Either way when it comes to Jessie, James and Meowth it can go either way at this point. They were integrated in this show so much at this point becoming basically characters which represent this show and help carry it on along with Ash character. They were also the only characters beside Ash which survived BW transition being sign of writers still finding them valuable additions to show not wanting to get rid of them. Perhaps biggest proof to how important and valued they are can be found in ex head writer Takeshi Shudo blogs and how JJM trio was one of crucial ad most important additions to anime giving him identity.
Although that was just opinion from one writer not speaking in everyone name, preferring them over others.
Regardless, i can see from where other comes from about TR having pretty good chance of staying for 6th generation. Logically if they wanted to wrap them up they would do this after operation tempest and whole mission about Meloetta and underwater temple, when they brought back Giovanni and TR organization in full equipment.
Fact how they didn't continuing to show them during Kanto, having them back to older uniforms and original plan of trying to catch Ash Pikachu after so much rework and change to their roles in first half of Unova makes m suspect how writers have no intention of getting rid of them any time soon.
Personally i would be fine either way, but i can say those three grew on me and it would be sad to see them leave after so much time building pretty good image of themselves, becoming like pokemon staples. Not to mention they probably have most detailed ad rick backstory than any other main character in show giving is lot of insight in past events and what mold them to become persons they are today giving them more substance If your going to keep character for so long, i say they should stick until very end than.
@Hidden Mew: i can agree how TR is highly popular as characters, with fact how they have even their own radio show serving as pretty good indication of being widely liked and appreciated. But to be fair character popularity doesn't play much role in his staying or not.
Not sure how popular Brock was in here(not referring to other places), but i remember Misty being massively liked before she left with such move not being welcomed by many.
And so were May and Dawn.
Although i guess extra advantage TR has over Ash companions is support they have from their voice actors and extra shows made about them gearing toward slightly more mature audience.
Their voice actors being popular probably gives them an edge, but I don't think that they're gearing towards a slightly more mature audience. I think that the fact that they've been around since the original series and weren't replaced at one point like Brock was gives them an edge over Ash's previous traveling companions.Originally Posted by pokemon fan 132
Speaking of others i remember Brock being respectably popular,. Maybe not as much in here but in other places he was. And man girls were definitely among most popular characters with original one departure being accepted most negatively. Although that could be to degree also because at that time people weren't used to cast changes like they are nowadays.
Ether way i agree how another factor helping TR stay is their timeless and recognizable image they build of themselves being main antagonist to show driving force Ash. Making it all that more doubtful that writers would want to replace this all of sudden after 15 years with new set of villains.
That would b pretty unoriginal and unnecessary at this point.
Dunno, perhaps i got wrong impression. But didn't their radio show contained slightly more "mature" dialogue passing certain things under radar which you wouldn't really see in main anime? At least not in today pokemon format .Their voice actors being popular probably gives them an edge, but I don't think that they're gearing towards a slightly more mature audience. I think that the fact that they've been around since the original series and weren't replaced at one point like Brock was gives them an edge over Ash's previous traveling companions.
Popularity through forums like this one or in other places online doesn't really factor into this issue. I was focused more on the popularity through merchandise, promotional focus for the anime and movies and their radio show and live show in regards to Team Rocket's popularity since that matters more to the people in charge of the anime than how people online, especially in a foreign country, react to a character or to their departure.Originally Posted by pokemon fan 132
Yeah, the trio being replaced with a new set of villains would be pretty weak at this point and I don't think that they would be interested in doing that with the new evil team anyway. They've at least tried to adapt some aspect of the evil teams in their respective series and I doubt that they'd want their own Team Rocket version in this new team. Meowth still being a marketable Pokemon might also give them an edge.Originally Posted by pokemon fan 132
I don't know since I didn't listen to or read much about the radio show. What I heard about it was interesting, but I'm not sure if they got slightly more mature dialogue going under the radar.Originally Posted by pokemon fan 132
Granted im not sure how other characters stand in comparison to TR outside of online fandom when it comes to promotional value and merchandise during their era, but i suppose point does stand of merchandise, live and radio show definitely helping to spread Jessie, James and Meowth popularity further and to wider group of fans.Popularity through forums like this one or in other places online doesn't really factor into this issue. While im not sure how popular they're as whole in America, Europe and other parts of world, i know that they hold respectable and very big popularity among Japan audience. And that's something which matters probably the most to producers and writers of this series paying mostly attention to feedback they get from fans in Japan.
Pretty much true. Since they already have villain organizations to use for every new generation from games , there's really no point in applying same concept with TR replacing main antagonists which follow Ash after every few years.Yeah, the trio being replaced with a new set of villains would be pretty weak at this point and I don't think that they would be interested in doing that with the new evil team anyway. Especially when they established strong following about themselves, build recognizable features about them(such as having talking pokemon )along with main motive behind their existence TR organization and Giovanni still existing. And it seems they're continue to exist until very end of this show, already surviving several failures managing to restore themselves after every bigger arc.

It's obvious Team Rocket isn't going anywhere anytime soon. They are extremely popular in Japan (They even got their own radio show!), so the chances of them being taken out of the show are the same as Ash's or Pikachu's, not even remotely likely.
Not only are they popular in Japan, but at our Pokemon fan meetings that Annie holds, Team Rocket, Especially Meowth is a very commonly discussed topic.
Besides, what point would there be in replasing them with a treo of newbies anyway? Oh i know, none at all!
