He was the main reason to watch DP IMO. Easily the driving force of the series.

I liked his role on the show but since he was not Ash's regional rival like Gary was, I don't see him reappearing or Trip reappearing for that matter. I also don't get Ash's other rivals not showing up other than his semi twin Richie or Casey which had showed no real rival antics what so ever. It makes me think that the writers don't let well written badass rivals show up anymore.
People should be thanking the writers for Paul not showing up in BW. He'd either be like Trip or a shadow of his former self.
Paul was easily best rival Ash ever had. While Gary was entertaining and brought conflict out of Ash character having nostalgic feeling to it,he cant be even compared in rivalry Paul had with Ash.Their clash and rivalry was one of DP highlights being written intensively and with lot of effort and depth.
Whole storyline of abandoned Chimchar which under Ash care manage to grow in strong Infernape proving Paul wrong about being worthless, was one of most mature plots pokemon had(and since its kids show, that says a lot),with competition between two trainers being build up over course of Sinnoh for Grand finale in league bringing climax to their fantastic rivalry and nice closure.
What i liked about Paul was that he wasnt typical "goody too shoo"you see in pokemon on daily basis having unique and deep personality. He always seemed mysterious with his cool and callous attitude feeling at times closed up in himself not being character which will cry or whine over lost battle taking defeats with dignity. It was nice for a change to have someone who has different training style using his own methods which while might have seemed cruel showed how there is more than one way to train your pokemon and build strong team out of it.He proved Ash how his bonding with pokemon"developing friendship and similar things"wasnt only right way to grow in strong trainer.
His arrogance, sneer and collected personality unlike its case with most characters actually brought best out of Ash only enriching their rivalry making it more interesting and he showed how under that cold shell there is much more, having feelings and personal issues. He carried burden of feeling obligation to prove himself to others and become better than his brother Reggie was not wanting to end up like him. Someone who played important role in Paul development as person defining what kind of trainer he would become, with his character not being simple.
Do i want to see him appear?Definitely yes, because it would be shame to leave forgotten such a good character, heck he should have continued to be Ash rival,BW would probably be much better than Trip disappointment we got.
It would be nice if we find out how his rematch vs Brandon went, and i could see him giving Ash that extra push he needs as trainer to start moving forward.
While Paul was proven wrong about Ash methods as trainer with his defeat spelling end of his role as rival in Sinnoh league, you could tell how there was left more to be desired.Paul finally started to respect Ash as trainer finding him worthy and way they departed showed they still have some unfinished business left to settle with rivalry never being officially over(Like it was case with Gary).
This could lead to possible rematch with Ash sometime in future which i would welcome.
It depends on character personality, carer and story how he will be treated.Take a look at Cilan,he doesnt seem downplayed at all.
If character has something on going for him and writers care,he cant fail.
The best rival that the whole show can offer, and hell yes, he'll be most likely telling Ash about the XYZ region
For the last time, BW is NOT a reboot.

Now, if Goukazaru went back to him at the end of DP I think a one episode/brief return could work, because then you could see the progress he's made in adapting to Goukazaru's style.
Essentially, Shinji is nothing without Goukazaru in my opinion.
Infernape was one of the main links between Ash/Paul, but I don't think that Paul couldn't be developed without him. Another thing about Paul was that he was basically a mirror version of Ash, so even without Infernape there still would be or have been something.
Like Ash he was still learning and ultimately trying to find his place with his own style. However, I do agree that he couldn't become a regular again because his story is indeed about wrapped up, similar to how Ash's story almost felt wrapped up in DP.
Yet we all know what the writers did to Ash... so yeah, like I said before I'd like Paul to keep the distance till BW is over. Him returning in a special episode or to introduce the next region like Gary did before is fine though.
Like struggling to find his ow style as trainer with disappointment he experienced from his brother Reggi turning him in cold, unsocial and at times very curled up in himself trainer.
And that defeats against Cynthia,Brandon or Ash showed how he is sometimes too sure in his abilities tending to underestimate opponents which is flaw because of which he lost.Granted he became little friendlier and started to respect Ash but it was showed how he still has struggles trying to find himself and where he belongs as trainer feeling need to prov himself to others.
I also feel way in which Ash departed with him seemed open ended with their rivalry never being officially closed down like it was case with Gary who decided to change career.
I would like to see rematch against Ash some day and to see if Paul raining style has changed in meantime.Perhaps that defeat in Sinnoh league might cause some change in Paul character taking different approach toward his opponents.
Not necessarily, writers could reopen Paul story if they develop new subplots and provide connection to Ash story. They are still technically rivals and if Paul travels in same future region after Unova in which Ash is,flare between them could be restored with motivation being payback and pursue of same goal proving of his skills. After all Gary lasted for more than one region as rival. However, I do agree that he couldn't become a regular again because his story is indeed about wrapped up, similar to how Ash's story almost felt wrapped up in DP.
About Ash ill agree how he improved a lot as trainer in DP and he showed how he has what t takes to win league, but that was hardly closure to his journey. His goal of master requires more than just winning one league and battling E4(for which as DP showed he wasnt really prepared).
Shinji was one of the best characters ever to appear on the show. The way he drove it ended up being something that I'd have thought long outside the show's ability. I also like the subtablity of the character and the fact that there was alot of humanity involved: none of the usual tricks you'd put with a anti hero like angsty sob stories, huge character changing breakdown, or even huge character change. The fact that this character was always in the gray area of the morality scale was also pretty cool. Plus he made Satoshi interesting (for me) for the first time in ages. His rivalry with Satoshi just can't be topped and it did make us question Satoshi's personality in some ways.
That said, like others have said, his ending was pretty nice. On the one hand I would like to see his battle with Jindai but on the other, it isn't really something I mind if it never happens.
I liked Paul's role in the show, and I do hope he makes a reappearance on the show, especially if there is a Gary vs Paul match, to see how both have progressed as individuals, as well as just to see Ash's biggest two pushes as a trainer go head-to-head in combat.
Anyways, like many of us had said before, Gary was the counterpart of the Gen1 rival. He's based on the game, and his characteristics were very similar. Gen 2 had Silver, but he wasn't in the anime as Ash's rival. But to many of us, Paul was somewhat similar to Silver that we all loved him, so I guess that was what made him pretty popular.
If he ever was to come back, I hope they don't change his character too much and make him a smiley all the time. I think that BW is not the place for Paul. Alot of kiddish and baby eyed characters. They probably would make him look weird too. But yes, he is interesting. I shouldn't have to list why. Watch the episodes.
If Paul were to appear in BW... no... we don't need two seemingly cloned guys going around and putting Ash down in a kiddy way XDD
