It's a kids' show, obviously. Anyone who argues otherwise is just too embarrassed to admit that they enjoy watching a show intended for elementary school kids.

No, I'm sorry but I think you're wrong, at least when it comes to my personal opinion on the show.
I can only speak for myself but I, for one, am definitely not too embarrassed to admit what you think we're hiding from the outside world so to speak.
If you were right and if it was true that Pokemon is geared towards elementary(!) school kids, I would be forced to consider myself retarded. But as this is obviously not the case, we can safely conclude that Pokemon is not exclusively a mere kids' show.

And even if you don't agree with me at all, I know that I'm right about one aspect of the show for sure: Cynthia
Cynthia, the most brilliant being in the whole world, the heaven-sent angel is just too difficult to understand even for many adults here on the forums. Thus, how could we even expect little kids to be able to grasp her indescribable greatness and glory? Even if Pokemon should end up on the same level as Teletubbies some day ( something that I hope will not happen), I will continue watching this show as long as Cynthia's memory is preserved and honored.

So basically, your line of reasoning is:

    1) Adults who watch children's shows are "retarded."
    2) I'm an adult who watches Pokemon.
    3) I'm not retarded.

    Therefore,

    4) Pokemon is not a children's show.

Of course, this all assumes that a label as meaningless as "children's show" is, in any way, derogatory. Except, it's not. It simply means "written so children can enjoy it," without any of the ridiculous stigmas you seem to have attached to it. "Children's show" does not mean "a show of inferior quality." It's not an insult, and every adult who watches them does not have mental issues. It's simply a description to let you know who the writers have in mind when they're creating the show. Nothing more, nothing less.

I couldn't agree more with Dogasu.

It is a show aimed to the younger audience and just because older people watch it too does not make them retarded. -_-

While this debate could easily get interesting in terms of the video games (due to things like the Battle Subway, higher caps on the Masters Division at VGC events), it's more clean cut with the anime - it's aimed at kids, no doubt about that. Hell, it's really an advertisement aimed at children.

Sure, there is the odd episode that seems mature; but isn't that really just because we're comparing said episodes to the majority? If you look at them by themselves, not even the most 'mature' episode is mature at all. The only time the series has remotely stepped out of its safe zone was with Paul and Chimchar; but even then, it had Ash's "Friendship!" vibe to stop it turning into a soap opera about abusive relationships. The Paul rivalry was merely a more focused plot line, rather than a more mature one. The only episode that I think of recently that even comes close is the Litwick episode, but that was just because of the peril involved, which you don't usually see in the series.

Then look at the big hype there was around Hunter J in the Galactic finale...yet all we saw was her ship floating in the water, some glass smashing and an explosion. In Japan, Pokémon is aired right before Naruto Shippuden, which has far worse despite only having a few commercials after.

But hey, what's wrong with liking a kid's show? Nothing I tells ya!

You know, I could write a whole book explaining exactly why Pokemon is a show for children, but I think it's obvious enough already. I'll just point out one factoid:

Pokemon is an Anime of the Kodomo Genre ("kodomo" means child in Japanese). Here's the description.

Kodomo is the genre for younger children from ages 6 to 10. These are often light-hearted and humorous in nature, though there is usually an underlying moralistic element that strives to teach children values such as honesty, friendship, compassion, bravery, and so forth. They also have simple plots that often resolve at the end of each episode or chapter in order to keep with the shorter attention span of children.

It's a children's show, but I don't think that necessarily excludes the show from dealing with more serious topics (in an age-appropriate fashion)..

It's just too bad that Satoshi Tajiri doesn't really have a say in the anime, after all, he's the one that said Pokémon Special/Adventures was the world that he thought was closer to the one he imagined in his mind.

But I digress, unfortunately Pokémon is considered by most "a children's anime". Honestly though, about 15 years later you would think they would have started doing some things differently. The point is, most animes made in Japan are meant to be enjoyed by all ages, much like manga. For example, just because you are a 35-year-old white-collar businessman does not mean you aren't allowed to watch or read Shonen anime or manga.

The Pokémon does has some more serious or mature themes (mentioned many times by people above me) which is a nice contrast. However, I am in the middle of the Battle Frontier arc so I have not watched any of the DP episodes which means I do not truly know how correct others are pertaining to said themes. What I am very apprehensive about is the Black White arc. It seems to me that even though Team Rocket has decided to be more serious, the episodes have downgraded from their current spot and have decided to become ridiculously childish. Once again, I am going off of word-of-mouth which is exactly why I am currently apprehensive.

Pokémon has, and most likely always be a "Childen's Anime" whether we like it or not. It is just too bad that a different group of people didn't get together first and decide to make an anime that would make Satoshi proud; but hey, that is simply wishful thinking and can't be helped now. Even so, I do not think the Pokémon anime is exclusive to children only. Mentioned earlier, most anime/manga is made to be enjoyed by all ages; because if you like it, you like it and nobody can force their opinions onto you.

He said that it was the manga that most resembled the world he imagined in his mind. And given the fact that the only other Pocket Monsters manga out at that time was a gag manga about a talking Pippi, a loosely-based on the TV series manga drawn by a former porn artist, and a series of four-panel comic strips, that's not saying a whole hell of a lot.

I do not think the Pokémon anime is exclusive to children only.
No one here is arguing that.

"Children's TV show" does not mean "for children and children only."

Actually, Toshihiro Ono's still a porn artist. He actually did a Pokemon hentai doujin, done in the style of Dengeki Pikachu under his psuedonym Kamirenjaku Sanpei, but I would rather not get into that here.

Pokemon the anime was originally intended to appeal to everyone, children and adults. And that's as it should be IMO.

“The question of raison d'etre is out of place! Don't put on airs!”
If you say this so, I will be at my wits' end. Perhaps, this anime is not only for children but also for their guardians: Where is this? Who am I? If you answer,
"This is a movie theater where I seldom come. I am a parent who has a child. --Ah, child rearing is expensive, tiring job."
I will be embarrassed slightly by your answer

That's just in reference to the movies, which have always included things for the parents whose kids dragged them to theaters. That's why they have those "World of Pokemon" segments at the beginning of most of them, for example.

The various TV series, which is what most of us are talking about here, don't even *try* to explain any of what's happening to the audience's parents.

Too bad that vision failed in countries outside of Asia thanks to the work done on the first two movies.

And this is where it gets weird...

To be honest though, in most "children's films" these days, you do get the odd joke or whatnot that's obviously for the parents (which children wouldn't understand). Off the top of my head, I can't think of any moments like that; although the dub episode titles often reference things kids wouldn't know about.

The series has tons and tons of pop culture references kids watching probably can't be expected to pick up on.
    So.
