Part 1
After all that hard training and earning Ribbons, May’s long awaited moment has come. She’s arrived in Slateport City for the Pokemon Contest Grand Festival, and just taking a step into the Contest hall to register. At the front desk, she signs all five of her Pokemon in, and the receptionist gives her a ticket, and a guidebook for the Festival rules are a bit different.
As they leave, May is greeted by a surprise guest—her Mom. Of course they should have expected her to come see this live, this is a pretty important moment. Making their reunion, she keeps her updated on the fact that Ash has already won eight badges, and is headed for the league next. Unfortunately, May’s Dad couldn’t make it simply because he’s the only one to guard the Gym, which is getting quite a lot of challengers. But, he’ll be watching her on TV.
As Caroline delivers May her mail, she receives a surprise. A letter from Kanata of Lilycove City! You know, the one that taught her to make PokeBlocks. Then, Brock finds one from Savannah and her daughter Sandra from Rubello Town… as well as everyone else. Timmy of Verdanturf, Abby from the breeding Center (Delcatty girl), and even Janet and Chaz from all the way back in Rustboro Hole. They all couldn’t make it in time for the festival this year, but they do remember May and are all supporting her. Meanwhile, Brock studies the guidebook. Just like in Rubello Town (which did have “Grand Festival rules”), different Pokemon are to be used in various rounds, and just like any normal Contest it has an appeal stage, followed by a big tournament.
Outside, J&J are pulling one of their old tricks again. They’re being dressed as Norman and Caroline, and making autographs as usual. One kid is interested in an autograph… as he comes up, they start to say their motto, but don’t give themselves away since the twerps aren’t around yet. He’s about to take out his autograph book, but they have a whole stack of fake signed posters. However, while the kid insists on having them sign his book, they snap at him and say they worked hard signing all those photos… but eventually they accept, sign, and leave. The whole fancrowd is oohing over Norman himself giving advice.
While May goes to the field where all the Coordinators are practicing training, she decides to show off some of her skills to Mom. As soon as she sends them all out, Caroline immediately notices Beautifly, and it gives her some sweet memories of her first romantic night. May adds that Beautifly was her first Contest winner. Ash also wants some attention, and while he’s in a field where everyone’s training, he might as well do some more Snorunt taming. As he sends it out, he has it fire and Ice Beam… the beam goes around in circles before hitting anything as May’s Pokemon nervously hide behind her, but as usual, it ends up freezing Ash again.
Unfortunately, Munchlax is at it again. While one of the Coordinators is practicing feeding his Zigzagoon by tossing PokeBlocks, Munchlax gets in the way and catches them on its own. Fortunately the boy has a lot of spare Blocks, and Max still has some of May’s special delicious PokeBlocks, which Munchlax falls asleep upon eating.
Drew and his Roselia have been watching this whole scene from nearby. As May notices him, they greet each other and as usual, try to outdo. Drew finally shuts her up with one of his roses, but just then, they’re greeted by another old rival—Harley! At first, May and the others are scared of him, given his malicious scheme last time. But as he approaches he seems like he’s pretty happy to see May, even after all that. In fact, he’s as enthusiastic as he pretended to be upon first meeting him, and the first thing he does is kneel and beg for her forgiveness. He even starts crying, but luckily May is easy enough after a long time. Harley breathes a long sigh of relief, and expresses his happiness and excitement in every possible way he can. He then notices the rose in her hands, and May realizes that Harley has yet to meet Drew. As they introduce each other, Harley starts going on and on about he he’s heard a lot about Drew and looks forward to facing him sometime. Drew stands, frozen in shock as Harley rambles, and eventually he takes out his camera and snaps a picture—kinda like he did when he first met May—and sets off. Drew moves along soon after, leaving May alone. Oddly, she’s feeling a bit nervous at Harley… and she’s right at that. As Harley makes his way into town, he seems to have another malicious plan up is sleeve…
Now, J&J (still as Norman and Caroline) set up a stand and are pretending to be PokeSeers, and are “examining” various trainer’s Pokemon, telling them their stats and how well they’re doing, and “temporarily checking” them inside (but actually locking them in cages). As they’re doing that with some kid’s Espeon, Harley passes by and seems pretty interested … but then realizes what a pathetic joke it is.
While they’re at it, May shows off some of Beautifly’s skills. Starting with its classic entrance with the sparkles, she then has it fly in a circle and use a spiral of Silver Wind. Harley was also watching this from nearby, and pops out complementing May on her great skill. Drew, however, is also nearby, and seems rather jealous. Harley, on the other hand, is rambling and sucking up pretty well to May, and going on and on about how she’s good and how they’ll promise to both make it far.
Eventually Drew interrupts their little scheme, claims Harley doesn’t know jack about Contests and that they’re supposed to be competitive and that his advice towards May sucks, but Harley claims he got a lot of advice himself from the Petalburg leader himself. With that, he takes out one of J&J’s “signed” Norman posters. May and Max take a look at it, and feel that looks a little different from their Dad’s normal handwriting, but then again they haven’t seen him for a while. Harley, on the other hand is shocked to hear them talking about Dad, but then Ash explains to him that they’re the children of Norman himself. One problem with that, Norman is supposed to be at home watching them. So, Harley takes them over to where he got it…
Caroline can immediately tell that it’s not Norman at all, and it’s a dead giveaway that he’s supposedly with Caroline, yet she’s standing in the crowd. Ash steps up at once, accusing them of being impostors, but they boldly deny it. May then has Beautifly use Silver Wind, and that whips off their costumes as well as the tent, revealing the cages. Lucky for them, they have a propeller above the tent, which they use to escape, but they forgot the most important thing of all, making it electricity proof. A Thunderbolt from our main mouse helps knock the cages down, and Beautifly’s Silver Wind once again helps them fall slowly rather than crash. The crowd cheers, and Harley uses this opportunity to keep buttering May up…
The Grand Festival has finally started! Starting with the Appeal stage, a bunch of trainers go (even Robert and his Milotic are back, and get 98!), and out of the important people, it’s Drew’s turn first. As always, he uses Roselia for this round, and it’s Petal Dance to shower the stage and crowd with flower petals, earning him a 95. Next up are Harley and his Cacturne. Cacturne jumps, does a flip and uses Bullet Seed. Ash is amazed with Cacturne’s incredible speed. He only gets an 84. Oh well, it’s not like he did anything abstract, it just had impressive speed. Finally, it’s May’s turn, and Harley wishes her luck as she steps up.
Expectedly, she uses Beautifly for this round, and starts by shooting a couple beams of Silver Wind right at the sun. This causes a cool illusion of sparkles showering from it. While Harley is sitting there in the waiting room smirking to himself, he’s surprised to see that May got an 88—better than him! However, as Drew walks in, he manages to resort to his happy self.
Later, as May goes back to the Center with her friends to chill, Harley pops out from behind and once again starts buttering her up. While he seems half sad, he’s able to cover that up by acting like his usual happy self. Suddenly, on the outdoor screen they notice Vivian announcing who passed. As the Coordinators appear on the screen, among them are Drew, Harley, Robert, and May! To Be Continued…
Part 2
May just easily beat the preliminaries, so she and her friends chill at the Pokemon Center while she gets everyone healed awaiting the next round. Once again, Harley finds May and starts going on, and then eventually even proposes that they practice training together for the Contest battle, to which she agrees.
As Drew is polishing off Roselia and Masquerain, May and her friends walk by, pumped up than ever. Brock, who is reading the guidebook, then informs May that next round will be a double battle, so it’s best for May to look her Pokemon over at who’s in the best condition, and decide.
Ash is in another area, training with Snorunt and showing off to Max. However, just as Ash tells Snorunt to fire its Ice Beam, a small speck of dust flies in its face… causing Snorunt to sneeze an Ice Beam across the field. This Ice Beam is directed right at a trainer’s Swalot! Luckily, the chubby trainer jumps in the way to defend his Swalot, getting a bit of frost on his butt. However, Ash has his trusty Fire type, Torkoal help melt that off. After that, they introduce each other, and the boy is a Coordinator called Tonpei. Unfortunately, he’s in a pretty bad situation. After a run-in with three people, he lost his Contest Pass as well as his Ribbons and all! Typical act would be to agree to help, so… Max goes to get Jenny.
Jessie’s excitedly dancing around with the five Ribbons, glad she finally has the material to enter. She gets a bit too hyper, does a little dance with Meowth, and imagines being the top Coordinator as usual. James, however, then reminds her that she doesn’t exactly have any PokeBlocks, and has yet to train well enough. Plus, the data still remains in the Ribbon and Pass as to who they belong to, as James finds Tonpei while looking him up.
Despite Harley’s secret scheming to win the round, May trusts him and sends out her Pokemon in front of him. As they all do their cheers, Beautifly is interested in showing off, but Beautifly already had both the training and the round to shine, so it’s Skitty’s turn. May starts off by having it use Assist, and uses Combusken’s Fire Spin, directly hitting Harley’s Cacturne! As Harley takes note of this, Skitty uses another Assist, this time Beautifly’s Silver Wind. Harley acts all impressed, butters her up with how Assist and her team give her perfect combinations. Drew secretly watches the whole display from behind, thinking to himself what idiots they are for showing each other what they’ll use before the round…
Max and Jenny finally come back and find Ash and Tonpei sulking about the lost stuff. While Tonpei repeats his story to them, Max then reminds him that they’re probably going to use the Ribbons and pass to get into the Contest. With that, they would be found out and forced to confess, because they have Tonpei’s data so they’d come up as his…
As the second round starts, Tonpei waits in the hall with Ash and Jenny to catch the culprit. All of May’s friends are watching, including Savannah, Timmy, Kanata, Abby, Norman, and even the twins from Pacifidlog. As Vivian announces and presents the Ribbon Cup, there are five judges this time. Contesta, Skizo, and three Joys. Before they start, she introduces each of them and lets them all have a word (Brock’s mind goes crazy with the clones).
In the waiting room, Harley evilly reminds May that although they trained together, he does plan to win. While he’s at it, he does try to pull a certain trick, but May doesn’t fall for it this time. In the alley where J&J are hiding, Jessie disguises herself as Tonpei (actually doing a pretty good job), and proceeds to enter.
At long last, Vivian says a few final words, sets off some confetti on stage, announcing that once again this round will start with another appeal stage. First trainer comes with a beautiful Ninetales, using Flamethrower. Next up is Harley, using not Cacturne, but Banette. Banette greets the audience with an evil cackle, which scares even Vivian. May notices it take over the screen in the waiting room and gets a bit nervous, but then it calms down and uses Will-O’-Wisp to create some dancing blue flames. Then, Banette uses Thunder, which creates a cool illusion yet shakes the stage and scares the audience. This gets him an 89 this time.
After that, a bunch of random Coordinators go using some cool Pokemon techniques, and finally, it’s Tonpei’s turn. As Jessie runs down the hall disguised, Ash, Max, Jenny, and the real Tonpei block her path. She doesn’t give up, but Tonpei then has his Swalot use Swallow, and it devours Jessie up. As she struggles inside for a little bit, it finally spits her out. Jessie’s about to fight back, but James and Meowth run off and drag her along.
The crowd are already impressed enough with Swalot’s unique entrance, starting flat and bouncing into shape. After that, it uses a Sludge Bomb combined with a Bullet Seed, and after the crowd enjoys that a bit, Swalot reaches out and Swallows them both, as the stage clears. 82.
May is up now, and it’s Skitty’s turn to shine. While the crowd are impressed with it’s cuteness, it uses an Assist of Silver Wind, the exact same way Beautifly used it last time. After that it uses a bunch of other Assists, basically taking Harley’s advice as it would be a cool way to show off almost a whole team with one cute Pokemon. Razor Leaf, Flamethrower, Vine Whip, String Shot, and Whirlwind all look amazing coming from Skitty. While Skizo is impressed, Contesta isn’t quite sure whether using the same move over and over is a good idea. Anyway, Skitty’s next Assist is a surprise—Solar Beam! Niether May nor her friends recall any of her Pokemon knowing Solar Beam… but then Brock notices Munchlax sleeping in Caroline’s lap. Anyway, Skitty’s next Assist creates a Petal Dance. However, as soon as it clears, Skitty starts running in circles unconsciously! It takes May a bit to realize why it’s doing that, but Brock is well aware that Petal Dance has the side effect of confusing the user. Either way, things aren’t looking too good.
Meanwhile, Harley is watching this in the waiting room, and realizes that she actually fell for it. He remembered her Bulbasaur well from the last Contest, and that it knew Petal Dance. Drew then confronts him about his whole scheme, and how he can actually win fairly without tricking his rivals. Either way, May then realizes that Harley tricked her into abusing Assist. So, she decides to use Doubleslap instead, which helps Skitty snap out of confusion by jumping around and waving its tail. Finally, Skitty jumps really high and uses its best attack—Blizzard, to create… well, a Blizzard below it, which turns into an incredibly tall and beautiful mound of ice. With that, Skitty lands right on the peak of it, and the crowd cheers. Unfortunately, May only gets a 79.
Out in the waiting room, May meets Drew and Harley. As she apologizes to Harley for taking his advice too strongly, Drew informs her that Harley was just pulling an all time low and tricking her. At first he denies it, but then he can’t help but confess how all this time he was sandbagging her and leading her on. With that dramatic confession, Harley smirks, and storms out of the room, leaving May quite irate. Drew says that he knew from the moment they met, that Harley was bad news. He’d tell more, but now it’s his turn. But, although he is her friend, he’s still her rival, so he mocks her gullibility.
This round Drew uses Masquerain, starting off with Hidden Power. Two rings of it form around Masquerain, and get bigger… and just as Drew snaps his fingers, they all explode indo sparkles all over the stage and audience. As they clear, the stage is filled with huge bubbles. Following that, Masquerain uses a Silver Wind at the middle, blasting the bubbles at the audience and into the sky so they can be seen at the stadium from a distance. With that, Drew bombs it with 100! May and Harley both look extremely nervous now.
With Robert and Milotic finishing off the appeal stage, Vivian announces the Coordinators moving on to the next round. Sure enough, May, Robert, Harley, and Drew are all there. As the brackets randomize for the battle rounds, May finds herself up against Harley! This is gonna be an intense round for the both of them! Later that night, TR decide to think of a new plan to crash the Festival this time…
May’s turn for the double battle against Harley has come. Thinking fast, May goes with Bulbasaur and Beautifly for this one. Harley uses Cacturne and Banette. To Be Continued…
Part 3
We’ve just left off on May and Harley about to face each other in the first battle round, Beautifly and Bulbasaur against Cacturne and Banette. Harley goes first with Banette’s Screech and Cacturne’s Bullet Seed, which already throws both of May’s Pokemon off guard, losing about 20% HP. May’s Mom is a bit embarrassed, but then when Bulbasaur uses Vine Whip, Cacturne and Banette try and dodge it, but Bulbasaur is quick and catches them both by the leg. While they’re both immobile, Beautifly does 20% damage with Silver Wind as well. After that, Bulbasaur throws them both, sending them spinning in circles while Beautifly uses yet another Silver Wind. When they slow down, they wind up confused, and Harley lost a little more than half the entire HP bar. Bulbasaur then goes for another Vine Whip, but Banette quickly counters with Torment, not allowing it to repeat its move. Bulbasaur backs off, withdrawing its vines. Cacturne then goes for a Pin Missile, but May has Beautifly quickly sweep down and lift Bulbasaur out of the way. However, Banette’s Will-O’-Wisp easily gets them no matter how high or far they may be, losing May almost half her HP bar as well. However, while Beautifly does a Petal Dance on Bulbasaur, it somehow pops all of Banette’s blue flames from its last attack! Vivian and the crowd are pretty impressed with her strategy. As Harley is gradually losing bits of his bar, he tries a last-effort Pin Missile from Cacturne, but fails in this mess. Finally, with Bulbasaur still on Beautifly, they use a combo of Silver Wind and Razor Leaf, knocking both opponents out at 1:57 seconds. This round goes to May.
Harley angrily leaves the hall, sulks into the dressing room and pretends not to notice Drew. But Drew can’t help but comment on Harley’s deserving what he got, and that he’s actually going to beat May without having a dirty reputation.
TR are planning their next scheme again, so they use James’ laptop to look up the top coordinator like they found Tonpei. Sure enough, the closest they could find is Robert, who according to the database sports Milotic and Claydol. Speak of the devil, they just see Robert walk out of the hall during the little break. Meowth quickly fires his net, but Robert is quick and stops it with his bare hands. Just then, Ash comes out of the door with Pikachu and Snorunt, ready for training. Noticing TR and the net, he sends a T-bolt to break the net. As they say their motto, they also complement Robert on his Milotic, but he just laughs knowing what they’re up to. As TR sends out Cacnea and Dustox, Ash decides to finally put Snorunt’s Ice Beam to use. However, it barely comes out. Robert then points out to Ash that Snorunt’s just having a bit of energy shortage from training as well as before, from the looks of it, so it’s possible that’s why it’s having trouble. Then, Robert goes up and gives Snorunt a bit of consoling about controlling it’s Ice Beam, with Ash and Pikachu’s support as well, and Meowth’s mockery. Pin Missile and Psybeam are just about Pikachu, but Snorunt pushes him out of the way and takes the hits instead! Amidst all the smoke and dust from the attack, Snorunt begins to glow… and evolves into Glalie! Robert congratulates Ash, and TR look threatened by Glalie’s angry look. Finally, Robert gives Ash the advice that Glalie are known to be well coordinated, and should have no problem controlling attacks. With that, he has it use Ice Beam sending TR off in a block of ice. Ash hugs Glalie, and thanks Robert for all his help.
Now May is up against Tonpei (Swalot kid from before), and there are 30 seconds left in the battle. May has half her HP left, while Tonpei has about 30%, and it’s Bulbasaur and Combusken against Swalot and Pinsir. Combusken tries to Peck Swalot, but Pinsir (who was hiding UNDER Swalot) gets out and uses its claws to shut Combusken’s beak. But either way, before anyone can make another move, time runs out, and since May has more HP left, the round is hers.
Back in the room, Tonpei congratulates May and stuff, thanks Ash and co for helping him with his previous problem, and moves on. Anyway, there should be about 8 trainers left now… and to May’s luck, she’s placed against Drew for the quarterfinals! Everyone’s shocked, but she’d have had to face him eventually…
This time May uses Combusken and Skitty, while Drew uses Roselia and… Flygon! Everyone’s surprised because they never knew of him having a Flygon, but Drew says he was saving it specifically. As Vivian signals the start, Roselia uses Petal Dance, having Flygon zoom through it. May decides to try her luck with Skitty’s good ol’ Assist, and uses Fire Spin! This stops the petals, and distracts Flygon for a bit as well. While Flygon is still airborne, Combusken goes for a Sky Uppercut, but Flygon is pretty fast and dodges. With that, Combusken falls over, right on Skitty, with Flygon hovering over them both! Things don’t look too good… but anyway, Flygon then lets out a Flamethrower and Roselia a Solar Beam. As they close in on May’s Pokemon, Ash yells to have them dodge it, but instead she has Combusken counter with Fire Spin. As it uses all its might, the Fire Spin cancels both attacks! Both May and Drew lose HP, but Drew loses a bit more. This was quite a tough move, so May deserves some applause. May then tries another one of Combusken’s Fire Spins, but Flygon counters with Sandstorm. In this whole mess of whirly-elemental attacks, Skitty aims at Roselia with Blizzard. However, the Sandstorm hits, and Drew uses the same trick having Flygon sweep down and grab Roselia, taking it out of the way. May’s side takes a lot of damage, now left with about 40%. One minute left…
Skitty’s Assist this time sends a Vine Whip, which they both easily dodge. However, she can still make use of it. Having Combusken jump really high, Skitty holds out the vines, and Combusken jumps from the tip right at Flygon! However, back on the ground Roselia tries to distract with Magical Leaf, but Skitty stops them with Blizzard. Flygon then tries to stop the Blizzard with Flamethrower, but Combusken, still in the air, absorbs the fire and heads towards Flygon. Engulfed in flames, Combusken goes for a fiery Tackle, hitting Flygon square-on! This stunt gets a lot of attention from the crowd, and even Norman at home, and Drew takes a bit more damage. But, it’s not over yet. Combusken and Skitty take a break from fancy stuff and just use Quick Attack and Tackle, since Drew’s Pokemon have just taken a bit of damage… but Roselia stops them both with Stun Spore. While paralyzed, Flygon hits them both with Steel Wing… and just as the clock runs out, May has also ran out of HP. This round is Drew’s.
May sighs, now that it’s over… but she is relieved to have made it this far, and everyone else is proud of her. That, and it was a pretty intense battle. Top eight is pretty impressive for someone’s first festival. However, Harley is really embarrassed and jealous and angrily sulking in a corner, that after all his scheming carefully to beat May and failing, Drew beat her just like that. Hopefully he learned from that… anyway, May roots for Drew for the time being…
Drew is now in the final round, facing Robert’s Milotic and Claydol, using Flygon and Masquerain. Robert has about 60% left and Drew barely has 10%, and there are 30 seconds left in the battle. Milotic sends a Twister at them, and before they can to anything Claydol pops out from the Twister and uses Hyper Beam. Finally, Milotic lays the smack on them both with Iron Tail. Flygon and Masquerain both fall, and the battle—as well as the Festival—goes to Robert.
Confetti fills the stage, the crowd cheers as Vivian awards him the cup. May is a little disappointed that Drew lost, but at least he got pretty far as well. Plus, who knows how she would have been against Robert. Anyway, to end the festival, Vivian announces a conclusion party in the evening.
May’s enjoying herself later that evening, but then notices in the distance something that looks a bit like fireworks. Then she turns around, and notices Drew outside the area, training with Roselia and Masquerain. She’s a little surprised that he’s not participating, but apparently he’d rather be training. That Robert is really an experienced Coordinator and one tough beast, and Drew wants to compete in next year’s festival as well. He knows Robert will be there, since he’s there every year, and his current challenge is to beat Robert. In fact, he did have a run-in with him back at the Slateport Contest Hall. Robert has been the undefeated top Coordinator for years now, and now Drew wants that position. May freezes for a moment as Drew walks off, thinking to herself… but then Ash and friends interrupt with a few snacks.
They then notice Drew in the distance, and ask if she knows what he’s up to. As her Mom comments that her friend Drew was amazing, she gets a little embarrassed and just says that she definitely wants to try for the Grand Festival again next year. She’s found her ambition, and that is to be the top Coordinator. Her mother and friends all with her luck… then Caroline remembers that Ash also had something, and wishes him luck too. That’s right, it’s time to head over to Ever Grande City for the Hoenn League!
