That apparently (according to a doctor and regular visitor to a friend's baby shop), the reason babies go still and quiet at the sight of a moving mobile above their crib may be an in-built response to something they recognise as a potential bird of prey/aerial threat. They have little depth perception yet, so they react by remaining still and quiet to go unnoticed just in case.
