Thread: Starter Discussion and Speculation

So people have already been guessing Froakie may be dual fighting by its second stage, Fennekin may be psychic, and Chespin may be Dark based on moves seen in the trailer and what have you. Could we finally be seeing the incorporation of a secondary starter triangle? People have talked about it for years, and because Psychic can't hurt Dark and it wouldn't work as starters' primary type triangle, it would work for the secondary type. Give starters less of an advantage by the final stage with the reverse triangle.

If Froakie does turn out fighting, I don't quite get what GF's thing is for Water/Fighting frogs.

Inb4 "fight/psyc/dark is a broken triangle"
I'm really excited to see the evolved forms. Can't wait!

Chesplin is my favorite. Even though it has some similarities in its design to Oshawott, I like that there is a mammalian Grass-type starter this time around.

Fennekin has a decent design, even though I am not exactly sure what it is supposed to be. I just hope that this isn't a fox. We already have two families of foxes in this series, and one of them is already Fire-type.

I'm not too keen on Froakie, since we did have the Poli family in Gens 1-2 and Tympole/Palpitoad/Seismitoad in Gen 5. Although Froakie is a frog and not a toad, the similarities between the two species are glaring enough for me to cry some foul here.

My favorite is Fennekin, with Froakie coming in a very close second.
Chespin's design is a bit boring imo.

As Fennekin's name says, it is based on a fennec fox.

It's a fennec fox since it has the huge ears and the "fenne" part in its name. Sorry.

I really am adoring Fokko so far. x3 I always choose the Fire Starter, they're always the cutest and best designed.

I just saw the trailer, and I have to admit, I'm liking them more and more by the minute. Fennekin is still my choice, though. It's even nicer that their sub types will be a nice change of pace. It looks like it'll be the following:

Grass/Dark
Fire/Psychic
Water/Fighting

Finally, an end to the Fire/Fighting type Starter. At least, that's what I assume it'll be. I've been wrong before, so I'm playing it by ear. But either way, I'm really looking forward to this.

Thanks. I thought it was a fox. I didn't think Game Freak would narrow it down to one particular species of fox for the pokemon design.

Yes, we did have a lot of Water turtles over the years. The reason why I picked Chesplin as my favorite is because at least it looks somewhat refreshing compared to the designs of the other two starters.

Vulpix and Ninetales, a pure Fire-type pokemon family based on other species of foxes, knew some Psychic-type attacks as well. Foxes are considered to have a supernatural significance in Japan. It's no guarantee that the Fennekin family will be part Psychic-type.

If Fennekin's final forms are true to the Fennec Fox's biology, then we may have a Fire/Ground starter on our hands. Of course, people said the same thing about Tepig, so it'll be difficult to say until we get more info on the inspiration behind these lines.

Grass/Dark and Fire/Psychic seem on spot to me, but I'm thinking it might be Water/Poison instead of Water/Fighting. We don't have any poisonous frogs yet, so I could easily see that being that case.

I'm betting that the Froakie line will be the most badass mons yet.

Definitely Fennekin. Fox+fire? Always works out brilliantly. Though of course the evolutions may change my mind.

I'm loving all the designs though.

But we have two poison toads (albeit fighting-typw)

Yikes. ninja'd.

Personally, my preference is towards Fennekin, but Chespin is my second choice

I stand corrected, completely forgot them. Regardless, I still think Water/Poison is a good possibility.
