I wonder if Xerneas has any connection to the musketeer quartet. I mean it looks kinda like Cobalion and Virizion, its legs almost look like swords and the musketeers are based on french characters and this new region has some France elements in it.

Yveltal looks damn cool. Looks like something out of shadow of the colossus. Sure hope it and Xerneas has what it takes to fight in Ubers with Reshiram, Mewtwo and the others

If the mascots and the potential Z mascot are drawn from norse mythology I wonder if there will be pokemon (legendary or pseudo legendary) that reference Thor, Loki or Odin.

Xerneas' resemblence to the Musketeer Trio is kind of a groan. Idk it just makes him less unique seeing though we got 4 of those things in the last Gen.

You know, I hadn't really thought of it that way (the French connection, that is) but now that you mention it, I wouldn't be surprised if they are related. If they are, you'd expect Xerneas to be a Fighting-type, but Virizion is already Grass/Fighting, so it can't be that. Normal/Fighting would be interesting, but then what's with the glowing horns? Unless it really is Grass/Steel (or Normal/Steel, even), and Steel is being treated as Fighting+ here.

Yveltal which Zeb said earlier and I agree does look like a Vulture - Death (probably Dark/Flying type)

Xerneas is an obvious nature representation - Life (If so, possibly Steel/Grass as it would fit and balances out against the above typing)

Z-Serpent - Rebirth (Don't know what typing, but imo probably Dragon and something else)
    Like this theory very much.
Though many clues seem to be pointing to such a theme (like the helix in the Japanese logos, the "blood vessels" on Yveltal) I wonder if Pokemon would ever get that existentialist :P

It seems that Gamefreak is revisiting the Air/Land/Water deity trio again. With Xerneas being the Forest goddess, while Yveltal is the Sky god. Maybe we could have a serpentine 3rd Deity as the water god. I know this seems to be a call back to RSE and all.

Also for Xerneas I'm calling Psychic/Grass while for Yveltal I'm calling Dark/Dragon. The third could be Water/Electric

I like that theory too. It makes a lot of sense and considering where Xerneas and Yveltal were placed in their trailers reinforce it. Xerneas is in a forest infront of a huge tree and when I think of forests and plants I think of life. Not only that has anyone else noticed that behind Xerneas the tree is really big? A world tree reference is likely here for Xerneas.

For Yveltal it is in the sky. Other than it looking like a Vulture Yveltal could be something like a bird that helps lift souls into the after life.

A snake for a Z mascot makes sense if we go by norse mythology with the snake under the world tree. But also look at how Xerneas and Yveltal resembe an X and a Y. A serpent like creature can easily position itself into a Z shape.

Pokemon will get that existentialist eventually, I mean its gotta keep itself running with whatever ideas out there. They've already done so much life, death and rebirth seem only natural.

Speaking of ideas what do you guys think that other legendaries outside of this possible trio will be based on?

If they continue with Norse based maybe another Fire/Electric/Ice trio based on Loki, Thor, and Sif respectively.

I was thinking of legendaries that are non-norse based since gen 5 had myths from all over the place. Props to you for Loki being a fire type but why is Sif an ice type?

Since they used the 3 musketeers which in pokemon lore would kinda be like mythological heroes instead of embodiments of the universe (pixies, legendary birds) or deities I wonder if they will start using other fictional or legendary figures as legendaries. Like a Water/Steel or Water/Fighting type to represent Cuchulainn.

That's a good idea; the fire/ice/lightning triangle is a recurring franchise theme.

I think they might do something on the Norns as well (basically, the Norse version of the Fates), since one of the roots of the world tree is said to lead to a spring they preside over. And it could probs make for cool mons à la the lake trio.

They appear to be a bit different in the Norse myths, heres one example:

    Nidhoggr - mythical creature

    Jormungandr - mythical creature

Seems pretty nasty though, even more so than the bird Yveltal seems.
The snake will obviously be based off the great serpent from the wheel of time series (no spoilers please: I'm in early book 4: The Shadow Rising)

I hope it's not. The Musketeers already have their complete team so I don't see why they would need another one thrown into it. Also, it would just make Xerneas less special I think.

They already had an Fire/Electric/Ice trio in Gen V so I don't think they'll make another one right after, and it's getting a tad bit old imo (if you count in the Beasts too). They can do so many other combinations so I'd rather like to see something else.

I must say, after seeing Yveltal's official artwork, I like it a lot more now.
