What makes this really interesting is that this is the first time that we've actually seen a Trainer on the animé actually training his or her Pokémon. In all previous instances, a new ability just appears out of nowhere, and we have just had to take it as read that Ash or whoever the Trainer is has been working with their Pokémon. This time, we will see exactly how one trains a Pokémon to learn a new move.

Yeah, in the past we've seen Pokemon automatically learn new moves by gaining experience during a battle (like Noctowl learning Confusion), and we've seen trainers teaching their Pokemon to overcome disadvantages (like when Ash taugh Cyndaquil to control it's Flamethrower), but this is the first time we've ever had a trainer attempting to train a Pokemon to learn a specific move. I wonder what all is involved. I've always imagined it being a mental and physical process that would involve doing whatever motion the move requires while at the same time concentrating on the element it's based on.

I can see it now... "Okay Pikachu, it's time to get in touch with your inner Steel type. Imagine yourself really hard, really smooth and shiny, imagine being weak to Fire" *Pikachu looks uncomfortable* "Okay, leave that part out."

Wow, Ash is really thinking ahead. I guess he realizes Treeko won't be experienced enough to handle the gym on it's own. But I guess it also means Ash doesn't plan n sending for any of his stored Pokemon...

Does Ash even know that Grass beats Rock? I can't remember it being brought up before...

It's not hard to concieve when you think about it. It's like training a dog to do a trick, or someone learning math. It's a gradual process. Pikachu will probably struggle at first, then it'll eventually be able to pull it off at will.

He'll most likely have Pikachu practice on rocks. That'd make sense. Rock and rollah the Iron Tailah. (sorry, i've lost it 8))

I think Ash knows the types, I mean all the time he's been training and fighting, he should know by now. But it's not like the game. Like when he sent Lapras out against Drake's Gengar. He did that because he knew Lapras was the only Pokémon he had with him that could work the water so well to avoid Gengar's Confuse Ray. That's really why he sends out certain Pokémon.

In anycase, he probably knows Rock's weak to Grass.

I don't remember if its been said before but they've shown it several times. One being in the Houndour episode where the pack of Houndour are unable to fight off a Golem but Ash's Chicorita sends it running after releasing a few Razor Leaves.

Well, Treeko's not nearly as tough as Pikachu yet.

Ah that's right, I forgot about that incident. So I guess he does know a thing or two about type matchups. He also said there, "Forget it, Houndour, your Fire attacks won't work against Golem!"
