I defended it? Don't remember doing so...apart from how Viz Media changing the names of the Sages to their game equivalents shows that they do their research on the franchise.

It also shows they care more about making sure names and terms match up than doing a good and accurate translation.

Wrong. The extra stuff in the opening was a bonus feature made for the special edition home release of the movie. The opening you saw in the dub was what the original audience saw in the theaters, too.

In this case, it had to be one or the other. Still, a few letters in a whole volume aren't too much of a biggy though. Although I admit, they could have thought of something to replace it with.

the japanese game is called ポケット モンスター プラチナ (poketo monsutaa puratina) romanized as "Pocket Monster Platinum" not "Pocket Monster Platina" because...

a) Platina is not a precious metal, nor a jewl, nor a colour... so it wouldn't fit the naming of all the games so far
b) "プラチナ" is the japanese way of writing Platinum. go ahead and google translate that for me -.-

therefore if both Pokemon Platinum (ポケットモンスター プラチナ) and the character Platinum (プラチナ) share the same japanese spelling, they will share the same English spelling as well.
