Default North Korea conducts another nuke test

Although North Korea had warned the world of its plans to carry out a new test in a vitriolic statement last month, the move is still likely to rattle the security situation in Northeast Asia as analysts try to determine the power and complexity of the device the North is thought to have detonated.

If confirmed, it would be the first nuclear test under the North's young leader, Kim Jong Un, who appears to be sticking closely to his father's policy of building up the isolated state's military deterrent to keep its foes at bay, shrugging off the resulting international condemnation and sanctions.

It also provided a provocative reminder of a seemingly intractable foreign policy challenge for President Barack Obama ahead of his State of the Union address later Tuesday.

The area around the reported epicenter of the magnitude 4.9 disturbance in northeastern North Korea has little or no history of earthquakes or natural seismic hazards, according to U.S. Geological Survey maps. The disturbance Tuesday took place at a depth of about 1 kilometer, the USGS said.

Looks like Kim Jong Un is showing he is just as military minded as his father.

And i say good for them. And if any people really really want to know why there building A-BOMBs it because we (USA) have them and we are still technically at war with them and they don't trust us (USA) or our allies in the region as far as they can throw them which really isn't far.

Actually, we aren't. The treaty signed to end the hostilities and set up the DMZ is official, it's just not "formal", since it was a large group signing. South Korea was the only nation involved that didn't sign it, which means they are the only ones still at war.

They just have it in their head that we're their rivals and worst enemy because, well, half the world hates the US and we helped South Korea the most during the war.

Actually there was no treaty signed to end the war and that armistice thing doesn't count china the US and NK as it was merely an armistice to speed up negotiations for a successful peace treaty which never happened and its flimsy at best in terms of its binding nature because of it treaty requirement.

Well we already knew that they had nukes, so this isn't really telling us anything new. Again I don't think you have too much to worry about if you're in any country other than Korea, and even then I wouldn't worry too much since you have a lot of close strong allies. Like I said when Communist Occupied Korea started its space program, the United States has nuclear warheads ready to go to any place on the planet at the push of a button and Un knows that.
    That's nice.

They only want the BOMB because we have have it and its being developed as a last resort weapon.

The same can be said for IRAN's nuclear program whether they build a bomb is irrelevant as they only want one IF and thats A BIG IF its because Israel has them.

And Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (Iran President) has also said two things 1. he never wants to wipe Israel off the map. (that was a mistranslation of Arabic to to certain western languages) and # 2 and he said in an interview with a western media source and I quote " If its so bad why do you have them"

Here we go again... *rolls eyes*

Hasn't the world not learned that the more sanctions they put on North Korea, the worse it gets? They're just adding fuel to the fire, I mean really, look at all the times in the past the world has done this:

    1. N. Korea launches a rocket
    2. UN security council condemns it
    3. N. Korea gets mad at the UN, boasts itself, and does a nuclear test, foreign sanctions galore
    4. The world goes back to pretending N. Korea doesn't exist
    5. Repeat cycle

And every single time, they worsen. You know, I think it's time we stopped ignoring them like we've did in the past, only problem is, we do not know what to do about it. To put it simply, North Korea is essentially the attention whore of the international community. The world is sick of it, and even North Korea's only major ally, China, is tired of it as well.

Face it, North Korea needs to stop acting like a spoiled child that demands attention by threatening other people.

THey seem to often forget that if they attack the USA, they are also hurting their greatest ally because the USA and China do a lot of trade. if NK would be so able as to send any thing past our radars that we deem as a "threat" is going to be a repeat of 1945 and south korea would maybe have to be renamed "the island of Korea'. If North Korea doesnt want to become part of the ocean or a parking lot they should look and see what happened to Japan when they attacked pearl harbor in cold blood. it didnt go real well

Considering if they fire anything at the USA that clearly has hostile intent, that's pretty much a green flag for the US to go after them. And at this point, I do doubt China would be in any rush to stop them.

And Korea is a peninsula, not an island. The word means 'almost island', but it's not quite there yet :L

A lot of people say that China wants North Korea as a "buffer zone" to keep US forces away from them, but I don't think that's 100% true, because at this point, China would just let the US invade North Korea, and at this rate, the US invading North Korea could be the next major US conflict, and could happen as early as this year, if not soon. Some people in South Korea are thinking that it should have nukes itself to counter the north, despite the fact that both the US and China want the peninsula to be denuclearized and more stable, which at this point, is getting less and less likely.

To put it simply, what North Korea is doing is essentially "trolling" the international community with it's constant threats to the US and South Korea, basically, harassing everyone else as a way of getting attention, and boy is it working all right, it's getting everyone else angry at it. They've already told China that they're going to do two more nuclear tests this year, because telling someone (China) that you're going to do something they're already mad at you for doing once already is always a good idea (not!).

So yeah, we're going to be hearing a LOT from North Korea this year...

It sounds like they're trying to provoke someone into action against them, actually. Annoy the one power you've got on your side to get the news to everyone and have someone jump the gun and start what you want. That way, you can deflect the blame on the aggressors and continue as you were, with compensation from the attack.

And Korea shouldn't have nukes, that would just cause havoc as North Korea attempts to build something to counter Koreas nukes, who'll do the same in turn. Basic Cold War scenario.

You know if Iran was working on the bomb for peaceful reasons then they should not be funding and supplying terrorist organizations like Hezbollah which could sneak a bomb into Israel and devastate them. And it might also help for them to stop making some of their radical statements about Israel.

It's not an island yet, but I think the crater that NK would be turned into if it successfully launched a nuclear weapon would fill up with the Sea of Japan real quick, thus turning South Korea into an island.
