Numerous injuries reported in large explosion at Texas fertilizer plant | Fox News

Department of Public Safety troopers were using their squad cars to transport those injured by the blast and fire at the plant in West, a community north of Waco, Gayle Scarbrough, a spokeswoman for the department's Waco office, told television station KWTX. She said six helicopters were also en route to help out.

American Red Cross crews from across Texas are being sent to the site.Red Cross spokeswoman Anita Foster says her group is working with emergency management officials to find a safe shelter for residents displaced from their homes.

She says teams from Austin to Dallas and elsewhere are being sent to the community.

The blast at West Fertilizer plant, reported shortly before 8 p.m. CT, was confirmed by Waco police dispatch operators. First responders are dealing with numerous injuries and major damage to structures and vehicles, Scarbrough said.

Several buildings, some in residential areas, were reported to be burning, others destroyed, and a nearby nursing home was damaged, according to a report from KWTX.

Initial reports say people are trapped in a nearby nursing home and an apartment building. according to Reuters.

A local school football field is being setup as a staging area.

According to scanner traffic, authorities are trying to block drivers from coming into town and evacuations are underway, FOX17 reports.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry released a statement on the blasts late Wednesday.

"We are monitoring developments and gathering information as details continue to emerge about this incident. We have also mobilized state resources to help local authorities. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of West, and the first responders on the scene."

Debby Marak told The Associated Press that when she finished teaching her religion class Wednesday night, she noticed a lot of smoke coming from the area across town near the plant, which is near a nursing home.

She said she drove over to see what was happening, and that when she got out of her car two boys ran toward her screaming that the authorities told them to leave because the plant was going to explode. She said she drove about a block before the blast happened.

"It was like being in a tornado," the 58-year-old said by phone. "Stuff was flying everywhere. It blew out my windshield."

"It was like the whole earth shook."

She drove 10 blocks and called her husband and asked him to come get her. When they got to their home about 2 miles south of town, her husband told her what he'd seen: a huge fireball that rose like "a mushroom cloud."
This one probably isn't terrorism. This one was more likely an accident.

Watching this on the news, I used to live near West when I was at school in Waco, and in fact drove past it on my way to the DFW area all the time. The blast is massive, the only thing comparable I can say is to a nuclear blast.

That is a video of the explosion.

So far 6 counted dead, but it is going to get worse, alot worse.

The blast could be heard as far north as the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I have two aunts, one living closer to West, and another living in the southern side of the DFW area, and both could feel/hear it. For those not living in Texas, that is atleast 45 miles if not more.

It should also be noted that West is pretty much out in the middle of nowhere, the closest big hospital is in Waco, 20 miles away, and that is a college medical hospital. Other than that, people are being flown to Dallas hospitals.

This isn't going to turn out well. 4 blocks of houses were damaged in the blast. And at 8pm a lot of people were in their houses.

It's a small town, usually everybody is bunched together in towns like these in Texas. Mainly because there is so much farmland already bought up and in use.

Yeah, small towns tend to be rather poorly-planned. It's probably been like that for a very long time.

Anyways, I can't say I'm not surprised that people are already connecting this with the Branch Davidian fiasco. Doesn't stop me from being irked by it.

Keeping all the people affect by this in my thoughts and prayers.

Worth noting Fox 4 ( DFW News ) is saying that garage doors a few blocks from the explosion were sucked IN, meaning the explosion took so much oxygen out of the air, that it created mini vacuums that pulled the garage doors into the house.

That's insane. The news here is saying that they're evacuating everyone from within a one-mile radius from the plant.

Sadly it may get worse tonight in terms of destruction of property. There is a massive storm line forming in Central Texas right now, it looks like it will hit all the way between DFW and Waco, with hail and high winds and possibly tornadoes expected. Meaning when it comes through in a few hours, the wind could knock down any building that is already broken from the blast.

This is crazy. So many explosions in the US as of late. I'm assuming this was more of an accidental explosion than anything, but it's still hugely tragic. Thoughts and prayers go out to the victims.

Anhydrous ammonia is horrible, horrible stuff. One charming characteristic is that it actually heats up on contact with water.

Eerie shades of the Texas City disaster, when a ship loaded with ammonium nitrate blew up while in port.
