Starfleet had received a distress call from the planet Vulcan. The USS Enterprise and six other Federation ships were preparing to depart for Vulcan and investigate.
“Course for Vulcan laid in, Captain,” said Hikaru Sulu, helmsman of the Enterprise.
“Maximum warp. Punch it," ordered Captain Pike. Sulu pushed the throttle all the way forward, but while the other ships entered warp, the Enterprise did not.
“...I don't know what happened,” said Sulu, turning to look at Pike.
“Is the parking break on?” Pike said in an annoyed tone.
“Have you disengaged the external inertial dampener?” first officer Spock asked. Sulu turned around and operated some controls.
“Ready for warp, sir,” Sulu declared.
“Let's punch it,” ordered Pike.
The Narada was in orbit high above Vulcan. Nero sat in the captain's chair, impatiently fidgeting with a memory disk that held a hologram of his dead wife, as his first officer Ayel stood by his side.
"Sir, Federation ships are dropping out of warp," Ayel told him.
"Destroy them. Destroy all of them," Nero ordered.
In the Enterprise's sick bay, Kirk was not feeling well.
"Bones, what did you do to me?" asked Kirk as he watched his hands balloon up.
"Dammit Jim, I had to do something to get you on this ship," replied McCoy.
The comm opened up, and ensign Chekov's face came on the screen. "We have reciewed a distress signal from the planet Wulcan. They are warning about what they describe as a lightning storm in space--"
Kirk didn't wait to hear the rest. He rushed out of sick bay, with a protesting Bones hot on his heels.
Everyone on the bridge was startled as an out of breath Kirk stumbled through the doors, Bones in tow.
"Kirk!" said Pike as he abruptly rose from the captain's chair, "You are supposed to be grounded."
"It's a trap!" said Kirk. "That lightning storm in space? It was also encountered by the USS Kelvin the day it was destroyed by a Romulan ship. That ship was never found. You are familiar with the Kelvin, sir, I read your dissertation."
"The cadet's logic is sound," said Spock.
Pike considered the information for a moment.
"Red alert! Sulu, drop us out of warp." said Pike.
The tension in the air was palpable, but nothing could prepare them for the sight that appeared on screen. The rest of the fleet was in pieces.
