For my first hosting of a mafia game, I decided to do it easy and bring in concepts from the pokemon games we all know. Since most of us have played GSC/HGSS, and the Johto region being the most popular region, I thought this would be the perfect basis... and I was half-right. It was easy to select which characters to use, and of course - a solid villain which I could use as a mafia. I was glad there was Team Rocket.
There are 20 players in total - 14 Townies, 5 Mafias, and 1 Independent. The ratio is less than 1/3, making the mafia slightly overpowered in numbers. So I decided to distribute the roles equally at first, and then throw in some special roles.
Lynchproof, Bulletproof, Nexus (action immunity, open to kills), Voteless, Double Voter, Cop, Reviver, Doctor, Reporter, Miller, Mayor (Governer), Mason1, Mason2, Vigilante
Role Cop, Roleblocker, Lynch Bomb, Lynch redirect, Godfather
Seeing that the mafia was overpowered, I had the Miller join the Masons. Then I felt the town was overpowered. So I decided to give the mafia an extra treat. Many of you had been confused by Rio Kamishiro's role. It's like I said in her Role PM: She can block actions the night phase AND prevent the target from doing anything the next day phase. So it's more like a combination of a blocker AND a silencer. Human called it: Action Blocker.
While many hosts divide players by random, there had been cases where one side of the team was consisted of experienced, tricky players and the other with mostly rookie players. While mafia games do include luck and flexibility, that sort of division would result in an unfair playthrough where the rookie side gets pwned with an early game over.
Since I had been in other games with most of you, I divided the team carefully by choosing members. Each side would have one rookie player for starters for balance. Then I carefully chose a group of fairly experienced players that I knew - and divided them.
Assigning roles had been difficult as well. Since I don't know how your playing styles differ, it was hard to give out roles accordingly. To make the game challenging, I had the rookie player be the godfather so he could learn how to adjust to the game.
Unfortunately, he died pretty early, and the mafia was soon swept in chaos. The town lynched the mafias one by one without making a mistake, and it left me wondering if I made the town too overpowered?
I had one more thing in mind. When I first designed the game, I wanted to get every story plot in the game - and Eusine as well. But all the players had been taken. So he was going to appear as an event for ability double effects on exactly Day 7 - for extra luck. It would turn the tables if the players were lucky, but the mafia was severely outnumbered by then, and the game was nearly over.
