Just a guess but probably because he voted based on gut, said there was a 50/50 chance of lynching mafia, and generally odd and "lets wing it" nature?

They felt that they lost hope of ever winning, even though their numbers were greater. "We can't just stand here and do nothing!" said Ash displeased seeing the protectors' performance. "Yeah! If we stop believing, we might as well just hand the GS Ball over to Giovanni!" proclaimed Iris. "Lenora would have wanted us to keep on going and try to defeat Team Rocket, not lose our motivation and sit around doing nothing." Cilan told the protectors. "Yes... Today is the day we get rid of one of them!" shouted Officer Jenny, ready to catch a criminal with her lust.
Trip was at the Pokemon Center, studying Ash's performance in the other regions he competed in like a stalker. "Yes... With this data, I'll curbstomb Ash's team again and get criticised on private internet forums of how much I suck for beating the main protagonist, because that is in no way allowed and an indication that my character and writing sucks unless my name is Peal or something." thought Trip, smiling. In the previous night, some shady figure had suffocated Trip's lungs, making him unable to talk and discuss with his fellow protectors. After he was done stalking his rival, he shut the PC off and decided to go downstairs.
Before he even knew it, people jumped on him and killed him.
"It's such a shame that his omnipotence in killing the other protectors was the death of him." said Alder, being disappointed in that Trip didn't learn his lesson yet. "The point in Pokemon Battles is to have fun, not to focus your mind only on winning." lectured Alder to Ash and his friends.
Trip
You are an aspiring Pokemon Master and one of Ash's rivals. A lot of people call you a Paul clone, but I don't see it when you're clearly the love child of Barry and Paul mixed in with some of Cheren's plot and purpose from the games. Nonetheless, I still like your writing and character no matter what people say about you. You go by the basics and want to beat the champion of the Unova region, Alder.
You believe that your methods for strength will make you unstoppable and beat Alder, who disagrees with them. When you were a child, you were happy and cheerful, but as you grew older with your lust for strength, you became egoistic and unhappy. You came to Nacrene City upon hearing the news that Alder was going to be there for some secret reason. Upon hearing that Team Rocket is trying to steal the GS Ball, you started to think that if you got rid of them, Alder would be impressed.

You are allied with Nacrene City. You win when Team Rocket are defeated.

There was one person who didn't get off Clay's eyes. It was the person who said that Skyla had joined Team Rocket. Clay made sure to keep an eye on them while the protectors went off to kill Trip. The person was none other than Roxie, Virbank's Gym Leader.
"Hey, missy!" told Clay to Roxie. "Yes, Clay? What do you want?" asked Roxie, puzzled. "I knew what you were trying to do yesterday. YOU'RE PART OF TEAM ROCKET!" shouted Clay at Roxie, pointing his gun at her head. "Hmph. No I'm not. I suggest you lower that gun, unless you want to die of course." threatened Roxie. Clay quickly shoot her in the head, thinking that he had avenged the poor Skyla.
Roxie
You are the Gym Leader of Virbank City and a rocker. You're an extremely strong trainer who, like Ash, has travelled to many different regions. You proved to be a huge threat to Ash, beating 5 of his Pokemon with only 3 of yours. You told Ash that you would be able to beat him with only 3 of your Pokemon. This showed that you were similar to the Kanto Gym Leaders, who handed out badges for weak reasons. Ash told you; "Screw the rules! I have balls as well!", and then the battle started. Your overconfidence took the best of you and led you to lose 5 of your Pokemon in the battle. This led to Character Development (Protip: If you use those 2 words together in the anime section you'll look smart) for you, and for Ash to get his last Gym Badge. TBH, Ash could have just sent out Leavanny, Pignite and Pikachu and beat you 3 vs. 3.
You've come to Nacrene City to protect the GS Ball and make a wild performance to everybody. Nobody would dare touch you with your poisonous Pokemon.
For that reason, you're the Bomb. If you're lynched, one of the players that voted for you to be lynched will be chosen to be killed as well. If you're nightkilled, the player that tried to nightkill you will die as well.

Clay was happy to see that he killed Roxie, who he still thought to be part of Team Rocket. Little did he know what was coming to him. Roxie's Koffing quickly came out of it's pokeball and sprayed Clay with hot, burning acid. Clay couldn't help but scream as his body was melting. The only trace that remained of Clay was his hat as the wind blew it away.
Clay
You are the Gym Leader of Driftveil City, a business man and a miner. When Ash and his friends came to Driftveil, you refused to battle him because of a mine you had to take care of, and because Ash didn't have any Revival Herbs. It's not said in the show as to why you make trainers get these herbs, but I think that it's a tourist stunt to make people go to Milos Island to get some revenue from the boat ride.
You started mining when you were young, and from there, got enough money to start your own business. With your Excadrill, you became a Gym Leader. You came to Nacrene City to protect the GS Ball from Team Rocket. They tried robbing the Kami trio, but luckily failed due to Pikachu and Axew's incredible DEM accuracy, bringing down their helicopter and freeing the legends.
The clothing you wear makes people think that you're a sheriff, when in reality you're just a miner and business man. Honestly, I will never get the Pokemon world's fashion sense. What's next? A Gym Leader who's a lawyer, but is dressed up as an ice cream man?
Because of your boss status, and because you're dressed up like one, you're the Sheriff. In the Day Phase you can PM me to kill somebody with your gun by saying Kill: Player. This can only be used once. This literally makes it a one-shot ability because you only have one bullet.
You are allied with Nacrene City. You win when Team Rocket are defeated.

As the sun was setting and the moon rising, Team Rocket made a party to celebrate getting rid of three protectors in one day. There were party hats, alcohol, darts to throw at a picture of Ash's face, milk, games, singing and much, much laughing.
"MWUHAHAHA! Look at thos' twerp's twerpin and killing each other off like as if there ain't no tomorrow" said Meowth as he laughed drinking his milk and throwing a dart at a picture of Pikachu.
"Those twerps better hand the GS Ball to us if they wanna lessen the sufferin'"
