You don't need to know if anything he does or says is to be a friend or because he likes you. Just continue being friendly to him, that'll most likely boost his confidence in talking to you or around you :)

Well, it is nice talking with him. It kinda seems like he comes up with reasons to come talk to me (but not often.) He's mostly quiet in class (or talking to people in his row.)

Really, only he can say. Some people will say things because they assume they're taken, or it's one-sided, etc. When you feel comfortable, ask him. You don't have to be direct, you can just start a conversation about relationships in general and lead up to it.

That is true. And if people say that he is taken, then that means some other girl loves him, but no one knows about his opinion. That happened to me once: Last year in school I liked a guy but I heard from one of the school bullies (but still a nice guy to some people and never talks to me :l) that some other girl I'm friends with likes my crush. But the bully admits that he doesn't know who my crush likes. Well, bully was right about a girl liking my crush, but he was also right on now knowing who my crush likes.

And of course, people may just be making stuff up or assuming.

Being yourself is a definite. Never ever try to be someone you're not. You'll drive yourself crazy, and there is a high chance of the other person feeling cheated and lied to if they realize you aren't who you say you are. If they can't accept the real you, then they aren't worth it. They should be able to know everything about you and still care for you regardless. Granted, he should get to know you over time; you don't need to lay everything on the table right away, but don't pretend to be someone your not.

Yeah, but not as much I would like. Like asking where things are (there are plenty of other people to ask, something he did in our last class together too.) So maybe I just seem knowledgeable.

Maybe you should go farther than that, like asking about his day and such. If you're comfortable with doing that. If not, just don't do it; it's better to not do something that's uncomfortable than to just risk it and do something you don't want.

It's just the one class one day a week. I'll ask more as the class goes on. That way I'm getting to know him without making it awkward.
