I mean, he's turning it into a series when he doesn't know how well 3 will sell. 2 will sell fine, due to hype. But how do we know 3 will be successful? And if it's not, how will he expect the 4th?

Three is generally a good number, because even if 2 sucks, people will (foolishly) think "hey, he made some mistakes in the last movie, but I'm sure he's learned and this one will be better." Four is questionable.

I personally don't see the purpose of any sequels to Avatar.
