There were eps where Ash ran ahead and Dawn/Brock were left behind, but it was just them trying to catch up to Ash and not really about themselves.
If Ash didn't exist at all, could you really imagine Dawn and Brock as traveling buddies? Its like they all existed because of the common friend of Ash.
Why didn't they have any for Haruka and Takeshi? What about for Masato and Takeshi? Because one reason, because it just didn't happen, they had a great friendship. Borderline shipping comments aren't needed for people to be friends, especially children.

Re: What did you think of the group dynamics of the DP trio?
So then what do you consider the chemistry of the overall DP trio then? Everyone seems to agree the BW trio has great chemistry, so what is the DP trio compared to what we have now in terms of group dynamic?
Re: What did you think of the group dynamics of the DP trio?
I won't beat around the bush. I think the DP trio was horribly boring. In groups of two, they all had good chemistry (Ash/Brock, Ash/Dawn and Brock/Dawn, though that's nowhere near as good chemistry as the former two) but together the three characters were just a flop. Their interactions were dull, uninteresting, and they just seemed so forced. They're my least favorite group of protagonists on the show to date. It was just so boring to watch them.

This, word for word.
however, I WILL say this: the group dynamics when it didn't just include the three were the MOST interesting, IMO. Out of all the seasons, forreals. Throw Jun, Kotone, Shinji, Kazunari, Kouhei, Nozomi, Haruka, etc. into the group and you've got incredible character interaction :D
Re: What did you think of the group dynamics of the DP trio?
They are all true friends, as they were always helping each other out.
Re: What did you think of the group dynamics of the DP trio?
I didn't like how the DP trio was always super nice to each other either.
Where was the sarcasm and playful banter all the other groups had?
Re: What did you think of the group dynamics of the DP trio?
I think they were too bland and I think they had no chemistry. They were just there to be there

Very true. Their respective friendships with Ash forced them all together originally but after time, some of the traveling companions developed stronger bonds than others. For instance, Misty and Brock had a close friendship, she said the two of them 'were like her family' and during her departure episode it was clearly established that all three would be and are friends for life.
Max was always fond of Brock, because he admired him and they became pretty close. May's relationship with him wasn't that strong admittedly but she didn't totally ignore him, and their where moments they bonded, such as shopping trips together etc. I know that doesn't sound like much but May and Brock didn't need to be that close because they introduced Max to keep the dynamic cosy.
In the case of DP they made the mistake of allowing Ash and Dawn's friendship to completely leave Brock with nothing. I don't think there was any indication that Dawn or Brock ever thought of each other as true friends. I think Dawn admired him but never really seem to bond with him. The dynamic would have been better if it was just Ash and Dawn or maybe if they'd added a fourth traveler to kick back with Brock, like they did with Max.
As it was, it seemed like Brock was pretty insignificant and no one particularly seem to interact with, or want him around.
IMO DP had the worst dynamic of all the sagas.
Re: What did you think of the group dynamics of the DP trio?
While I too feel that, as a group of three, the chemistry between them wasn't at all memorable, I can't say I agree that it was any better with duos. Frankly, I never found Ash and Dawn's friendship all that enthralling either. The majority of the time, it essentially boiled down to just the two of them training their pokemon in practise battles, or giving each other tips and praise. I mean, yeah, people helping each other and stuff; it's nice. But I personally found it painfully boring viewing, and honestly struggle to remember moments between the two that wandered into territory other than that.
Perhaps it's a harsh word to use, but honestly, everything about the DP group has always felt so oddly....artificial, imo.
Re: What did you think of the group dynamics of the DP trio?
I always liked the Dp group because it reminded me of the friend group I use to hang around with.
I found how the group operated to be perfectly fine and really enjoyed it.
DP is my favourite group but I've enjoyed all the groups at one point or another. It's fun seeing how the characters grow with different group atmospheres. .
Re: What did you think of the group dynamics of the DP trio?
I didn't care too much about the DP trio's interworkings, to be honest. I always felt deep inside that the main stars of the anime are the pokemon that each trainer happens to acquire, and DP took that principle to its highest level.
There was too much of a structured storytelling element which existed in DP, so something had to give. Ash and Dawn were just too different people to have Brock meshed in the middle.

To be fair, Ash was getting on Dawn's nerves near the beginning of DP when he criticized her for not being able to catch any wild pokemon. That was as close to "sarcasm" that the DP trio reached.
Brock was that type of person. He didn't try to meddle with anybody else's business and respected the decisions that his companions made throughout the journey. Brock never pushed May or Misty off their high horses in the original series when each of them made irrational decisions.
In fact, the only time I saw Brock and May interact with one another for more than a few seconds in AG was during that one contest, and only then it was because, again, Brock wanted to impress a female COTD. Even back in AG, we've hardly seen Brock mesh in with members of the main group other than the other "odd man out," Max. Brock was the one providing commentary on all of the important battles that he had witnessed, and he had done this with both May and Max as well.
Most of Brock's interractions with any of the groups were, imo, how he reacted to meeting with older girls. Both Misty and Max consistently grabbed Brock's ear as part of a recurring gag, and some could argue that this was a sign of a "dynamic." Either way, his Croagunk fulfilled that role in DP, leaving absolutely few niches for any of the other human main protagonists in that series to attempt to interact with Brock in a profound way.
In lament's terms, Brock acted as a teacher and a caretaker for both Ash and Dawn, but it did not expand further than that. The only hint I got out of a Dawn and Brock dynamic existed in the "Mamoswine VS Aggron" episode, when Dawn used the survival methods that Brock taught her and Ash in "Doc Brock" (Pachirisu gets sick) episode. It is presumably because of these skills that Dawn evolved from being a "princess;" carrying all of her dresses and luggage with her on the start of her journey, to learning how to survive on her own without these necessities. It is safe to say that Dawn could be able to fend for herself and her pokemon in the Hoenn Region because of the skills and resources that Brock taught her.
Brock's presence evolved Dawn's character ever so slightly, but it didn't "enhance" it. The same could apply in May's case back in AG, who rarely interacted with Brock or even attempted to seek out his advice. Brock was fueled either by a desire to raise and taking care of the group's pokemon, or by his obsession towards love and finding women. These characteristics prevented Brock from attaining any genuine, solid relationships with the majority of the people he travelled with.
Re: What did you think of the group dynamics of the DP trio?
Character interaction is very important to me. A character on their own can be fine, but if they don't interact well with other characters I'd find them dull.
As someone who was here back when DP started in 2006, I remember Dawn being a lot more popular in the beginning of the DP series than she was in the middle or at the end. Why? Part of it had to do with she was initially a fresh character and getting a lot of screentime, but also because we thought she was going to have memorable interactions among the main cast and rivals. It was really only Ash she had good chemistry with, and that's only because they were making her very similar to him.
Once the "freshness" of DP ended, we were left with a very awkward trio that felt like it was forced together just to keep the show going. Brock was created to play off of Misty, not Dawn, and so the character interaction was much worse. Likewise Dawn's interactions with almost everyone wound up feeling the same anyway, probably because her personality didn't grow or change at all.

Actually, no he wasn't. Brock was made to be a friend to Ash, not Misty. If Brock was made to play off of Misty, he would have left all those years back along with her. He was created to be best friends with Ash, that's all.
Re: What did you think of the group dynamics of the DP trio?
To me, they seemed like two kids running around, with a parent supervising them.
