    Default Ash/Satoshi's Strongest Fire type

The recent review of my favorite poke Torkoal as POTW and the trashing it received got me thinking about the fire types in Ash/Satoshi inventory.

Charizard - Fire/Flying type who held its own against Entei and Articuno

Infernape - Fire/Fighting. The Star from DP. Strong and fast.

Torkoal which nearly took out Registeel. Strong attacks and massive defense.

Quilava - Not much screen time but strong attacks and good speed.

Tepig is only now being introduced this generation so its best to drop him from the poll for the moment.

Who do you think would win in a series of 1-1 battles.

As for my own opinion on the subject, Quilava depends on speed and evasion. Good traits but not enough against the other 3.

Torkoal has massive defense and strong set with iron Defense, Flamethrower, Heatwave and body slam.
It would fall against the seismic toss from Charizard and Dig from Infernape though. Sadly my favorite pokemon Torkoal does not stand up to Charizard & infernape.

Now to choose between Charizard and Infernape. Infernape has flare blitz. dig, flamethrower and mach punch. Charizard has flamethrower, dragon breath, seismic toss and steel wing (also overheat).
Infernape has strength/speed but it's attacks are not effective against a flying fire type.
Charizard can fly and do serious damage with seismic toss/ dragon breath.

While a close call, my vote goes to Charizard.

I'm gonna say Infernape. I always felt that Charizard's battling prowess was overated since it doesn't really have that great battling of a battling record for all the hype and his power wasn't really portrayed to be as consistantly high as Infernape, even without Blaze.

Quilava had a really killer gym record back in Johto and he's got Eruption so to me he's just below Charizard.

Torkoal... yeah... it's the weakest by far.

Charizard KO'd half of Gary's team by itself. Did Infernape do anything remotely like that. Nyet.

Torkoal. It almost took down a Registeel.

I'm going to be a massively biased Cotoise fan here and say Cotoise. Being a defensive Fire-type is pretty bizarre, but it had powerful moves like Overheat and did nearly beat Jindai's Registeel. Lizardon beat a weaker Freezer from a weaker Frontier Brain (and lost to a Samayouru) and Goukazaru relied on Blaze heavily for some of its greatest accomplishments (beating Shinji, beating Denji, evolution, etc).

It KO'd half of Shinji's team, and with the announcer calling Shinji Satoshi's greatest rival to date, I think Goukazaru safely has that one in the bag ;P

Yeah, but didn't Blaze help against Electivire, so I would have to say that Charizard is the strongest.

Torkoal is an odd duck in the world of fire types as a mostly defensive type. The only pokemon which has the same potential is the 5th gen heathmore. I've explained my choice as to why i think it is weaker in 1-1 battles than Infernape and Charizard (Dig and Seismic toss).

However i don't think it's weaker than Quilava though. Quilava has strong attacks, but none of those are effective against Torkoal and it's massive defense. If Quilava ever evolves in the series into Typhlosion and learns moves like wild charge and/or Focus Blast this may change.

For the moment i'm going with my previously explained choice for Charizard.

It was between Infernape and Charizard, and in the end, I voted for Infernape. Granted, Charizard has some impressive achievements of its own, such as standing up against a very powerful imaginary Entei, defeating Gary's Blastoise and Noland's Articuno, but Infernape had an important part in most of Ash's Sinnoh gym challenges, even managing to defeat three of Paul's Pokemon in the full battle, most certainly proving to its original trainer that it's not pathetic at all.

    Who is this git?

You know I wish Quilava got more screentime and evolved in Johto, while it probably would have never been as strong as Charizard/Infernape, it could have been close as a speedster pokemon.

What a damn shame the writers somehow managed to mess up Ash's Johto starters completely.

Quilava more screentime and earlier evolving would have been nice. Totodile was/is still a favorite though. The whole Meganium could have been left out as far as I'm concerned.

Charizard and Infernape are pretty much tied in my opinion, both are incredibly strong but I think any old Pokemon fan will say that Charizard is better. Infernape is strong but I think he's overrated and it wins most of its battles by using Blaze since Charizard most likely has Blaze as well I'm going to say Charizard is stronger.

Torkoal isn't all that bad, at least it got a league win unlike Torterra.

Either Infernape or Charizard easily. Its hard to say which is better though, because to me Charizard has more experience and has battled against legends fairly well but Infernape's Blaze ability seems abnormal. I'd say that its a tie. Both have great accomplishments under their belts.

Even though hes not in the poll, I highly doubt that Tepig will reach the heights of power that Charizard/Infernape reached, simply due to how hes being handled.

Charizard, for one reason: it beat a flipping legend! Although Infernape may not be far behind it.

It's a tough call, but I'm going to go with Infernape. Even without Blaze, it was shown to be a pretty strong Pokemon throughout DP and I think that its last few Gym battles, as well as its battles in the Ash vs. Paul match, show that it was the strongest out of Ash's Sinnoh team. Though, Blaze was a nice touch. Charizard does have more experience than Infernape and it has beaten a legendary Pokemon, but I would still give the edge to Infernape since I think that it has a better battle record compared to Charizard. Charizard is in a close second due to its moveset and some of its battles in Johto and the Battle Frontier.

Quilava had quite a few victories back in Johto and it does know Eruption, so it would be in third. Torkoal is easily Ash's weakest Fire Pokemon to me at the moment. Aside from a couple of matches in the Hoenn League, I don't think that it really did anything that impressive. I don't really see how almost defeating a Legendary Pokemon that it did have a type advantage against makes it stronger. If it almost defeated a legendary Pokemon that it had a significant disadvantage to, then I probably would see it as being a bit closer to Quilava in terms of strength, if not tied with it, but I've always seen Torkoal as pretty weak.
