Aside from the Mii, the majority of Mario Kart 7 players use feather-weight characters, Yoshi, and Metal Mario. :/
Light is always good for speed.
Large axles and good handling.
Light weight characters are good at acceleration and handling but are the slowest characters in the game, while the heavy weight characters are the faster but are sluggish at acceleration and handling. Mario Kart 7 introduced two new weights in the roster.
In MK Wii, I always used mediums and heavys. I never liked the light people.

Super Mario Kart
Pros: First of the series, great BGM, utilizes the super chip that makes vehicle-based games possible
Cons: Power sliding is terrible, the CPUs don't play by the rules, broken items (the feather)
Mario Kart 64
Pros: Memorable courses, outstanding BGM, ending credits theme, introduction to Mirror Mode
Cons: introduction of the dreaded blue shell, power sliding is still terrible
Mario Kart Super Circuit
Pros: Throwback to Super Mario Kart, good BGM
Cons: Lack of newcomers, no way to play with others unless you have cable (meaning you're stuck with playing CPUs), power sliding is still terrible
Mario Kart Double Dash
Pros: 2 characters in one kart, great tracks, outstanding BGM, introduction to Toadette (thus making female toads canon outside of Paper Mario), power slides have improved
Cons: Baby Mario and Baby Luigi (Time Paradox!)
Mario Kart DS
Pros: new and improved power sliding, Wi-Fi, R.O.B. cameo, great BGM, interesting courses, introduction to retro cups
Cons: the music from retro tracks aren't as good as the originals, Snaking, hacks on Wi-Fi races
Mario Kart Wii
Pros: Snaking is fixed, introduction to bikes, Rosalina and Funky Kong, a few memorable tracks, good BGM
Cons: unbalanced items (I blame the 12 racers per track feature), hacks on Wi-Fi races, the baby Mario characters and Dry Bowser (Time Paradox!)
Mario Kart 7
Pros: No more hacks thus making Wi-Fi matches a blast, introduction to gliders, interesting tracks to utilize gliders and underwater sections, great BGM, the ending credits theme
Cons: Metal Mario (Time Paradox!), the Maka Wuhu glitch

Big axles :Fast acceleration but low top speed
Small axles: Slow acceleration but high top speed
