First of all, why are you even comparing Kingdra and Heatran? They aren't of the same type, and their moveset's type coverage differs greatly. If you must compare the two, I'd say that Kingdra's Dragon+Water move combo can hit more pokemon for neutral damage, but Heatran's moves offer more super-effective hits (along with more pokemon that resist them). Defensively, Kingdra only has one weakness, which it can counter back with its STAB moves. Heatran's Steel-type gives it many resistances, but also gives it a terrible Ground weakness. In essence, Kingdra is well-rounded, but Heatran is stronger if you use it right.

I'm curious as to what reasoning Smogon gives for its choice, however. It's interesting to hear their reasoning when I generally don't agree with it.

smogon actully compared them, and i didnt know why, but i do now heatran is very strong and over used

I don't know how anyone can say that Heatran is "better" than Kingdra. Both Pokemon serve different purposes and are useful under different sets of circumstances. I imagine Kingdra would win in a 1 vs. 1 fight against non-Scarfed Heatran, but prediction would likely decide the outcome in a standard battle.

I have a Ludicolo that currently knows Counter/LeechSeed/GigaDrain, which I'm trying to make into a subseeder. Assuming I set up Rain with something else, I'm debating about adding Substitute/IceBeam in. What would be the best moveset in this case? I'd like to keep Counter, if possible.

That's really the standard set. However can you tell me it's Nature? A Counter set might work...

Hm idk if it would work at all...it would be mostly a novelty set anyways.

You could have had something like Counter/Surf/Grass Knot/Ice Beam.

This is, no doubt, a very very stupid question. However, bear in mind that to date I've never engaged in a battle with a real person, just the various CPUs.

So, bearing that in mind: What advantages does Substitute provide? Obviously it has them, or people wouldn't bother with it, but I can't see the point of the move, not from reading its description nor from watching other people's battles.

substitute stops you from getting hit with status moves. It allows frail pokemon to set up a substitute, then attack while surviving another hit. A pokemon like Breloom or Walrein, who can regain 12% health a turn can set up a substitute, use protect ,and regain all the damage they took, while fainting other pokemon via toxic or something. This also works through leech seed. It als is baton passable, so you can allow the pokemon which comes in to be protected. Lastly, it lets yu scout with a pokemon's switch in, so you can make sure you will infact hit the right target with the odd move you are carrying to kill a counter instead of doing little damage to another pokemon.(If that didn't make sense see the subtini explanation here)

Anyone know of a good Water counter for a Sandstorm team, it's been pretty successful (for a n00b like me), but nearly my whole team (beside Swampert) can be taken out by a good Water sweeper.

Superchari set from Smogon. It's underestimated, since the opponent will usually switch to a flinchhax Jirachi counter, then uou get a free CM, and ca sweep.
