Thread: EV question.

I have just recently gotten back into Pokemon with Pokemon Black, and I've been reading about effort values, something that is very new to me.

I already understand what they are and how to get them, but I have a few questions about training.
I want to EV train my level 50 Emboar and level 50 Haxorus. I've found out that EV I should train for these two would be attack. So I would just battle a Pokemon with another EV of attack 4 times to get one stat point, and then just do that until it gets to 255 max? Also, I have already maxed out my protein(?) just because I know it gives you better stats, so I have the 10 protein thing finished.
And also, will I be able to max it at level 50? Or would it be better starting with a level 5 or whatever? Since I'm not used to this, it means I'd have a hard time advancing in the game if I have to worry about EV training before I complete the Poke League.

Edit: And also, what if I battle trainers or other wild Pokemon along my EV training journey and rank up the wrong stat?

I'm new to it too dude, and I think you'd be able to max it from level 50 as it doesn't matter when you start ev training I think. There are berries that can fix your pokemon's EV's if you rank up the wrong stat dude

@AnotherPokemonPlayer; Yeah, I think you have it right. You should still be able to do it from level 50, but only if those 2 Pokemon have 0 EVs when you started. For example, if you used an Exp. Share or had to battle wild Pokemon to get them up to that level, then those Pokemon would already have some EVs that you would have to reset. You would do that using certain berries, I think. Personally, I don't think it's a very good idea to actually go on a journey while EV training, it would take a really long time and you would need to be especially patient. It's significantly easier to do it during post game.

To make EV training easier, you could have the Pokemon hold a Macho Brace or one of the Power items, which increase the number of EVs you get when you defeat one Pokemon. Pokerus also increases EVs, too. And there are certain Pokemon who give more than 1 EV even under normal circumstances when you defeat them.

I am new to this too, so someone tell me if I got something wrong. ^^;

It doesn't have to be post game, but stay in the same area and defeat pokémon there until you are done. For attack, I think that the desert is good. Run from pokémon that gives the wrong ev's and count the pokémon you defeat.

Okay Thanks. I decided to be safe and EV train my newly caught level 70 Volcarona. First I made it eat 10 Calcium giving it 100 Special Attack EV, then gave it a macho brace to hold and defeating 76 (+1) special attack EV Pokemon adding up to 252. That's what I do correct?

After I do the same for my speed EV I need to know - can I then use the Pokemon normally and defeat other EV yielding type Pokemon without worrying that it'll mess something up?

Edit: altogether that would be 504. Does that give me 6 free EV points to go and use in whatever stat I want? For example, 4 in HP and 2 in Special Defense.

Put all the remaining 6 in the same stat. Make sure that the hp will be odd at level 100.

Oh. What if I put them equally in other stats?

And, once I max my speed EV for Volcarona.. will I be able to fight normally? Or will it affect my EVs to battle Pokemon of different EV types once I've maxed mine?

You won't gain any stats from only one ev.

Once your ev's are maxed, you can't gain more.

Okay that's good then. Would you mind answering this question I had too?

One more EV question. If I EV train a Bagon hatched from an egg in attack and speed to it's max while gaining it around 30 levels in the process, then go onto evolve it to Salamance... will the EVs "reset" upon evolution or will they stay forever?

I'm almost 100% sure they stay. The only way I know to reset EVs in Black is by using berries.

They will not reset. So your good.

On EVs I'm pretty sure its not 4 effort points to increase a stat, it can take 7-10 EVs to increase a stat. I personally tested it out by marking in my notebook, and checking my tepig and other pokemon's stats every battle.

It depends on the level. At level 100, it's 4 ev's per stat point.
