    The Kingdom of Solria

The main setting of Casting shadows. It is the homeland of the majority of main characters including Jaklo and Kathrin. The Kingdom functions as the ,as you might say, “region” that the heroes travel through. It contains many small towns and big cities most of which are named for what kind of pokemon live near by. Thunek, Jaklo’s home town would have many electric types (this is one of many things I still need to weave into the story).

This Kingdom is very similar to the medieval styles of western Europe. It bares very much resemblance to Britain due to its use of Longbows and preference to large castle towns. I also want to use somethings that were common to Italy. I love Itlatian architecture, and I will incorporate it more into some of the later towns. I also plan to have a few hints here and there at french artwork.

    DANGERS:

I enjoyed (in the sense of writing them) trying to make reference to the dangers of medieval towns. Many had only one well making fire a massive danger also town squares would be large enough to gather everyone into, and due to the capabilities of pokemon make them very easy targets.

    East meets West:

The idea of trying to use Pokemon in a European style world is a bit hard since it is originally a Japanese creation. When writing I really had to go ahead and work in a whole new experience for the pokemon and people. I had to figure out how people in medieval Europe would act if they had access to almighty pokemon.

    Medieval fantasy and Pokemon

    Basic ideals of mystical lands:

I personally found that I based a lot of the kingdom on the same kind of ideas that other majestic fantasy worlds are set in:

I tried to make reference to the deep mystic reverence for mythical beasts in this case Pokemon.

I had to make people both fear and respect pokemon. If they were not feared then people wouldn’t care, but if they were too horrifying then people would cower at the sight of a Magikarp. Respect was important because if they were un-respected then people might end up seeing them as just another animal and eat them (survival of the fittest I guess) if they were to respected each Pokemon would be a legendary and the story would go no where.

People were divided by wealth, skills, and race.

You may notice the lack of high class people bumping into Jaklo. that’s because in those days if you were wealthy you were to good to bother with any one with less. Skills refer to “classes” like Timber walkers (basically the books Rangers, but more “flexible”) especially in the military troops were trained hard and long in very different settings. Race in our world mean basically skin color in Casting shadows it means Humans, Nyffs, and a few others I haven’t revealed.

Readers currently know very little of Nyffs even though they have met one if they have read all the posted chapters. Nyffs similar to Elves (wood elves mainly.) they are the worlds woodland humanoids. They bare remembering due to their future importance. Other wise here is more on Nyffs in a handy little spoiler.

I have plenty more things to say, but not at the moment so I’ll end here for now. I do work on this when I get the chance, btu that is becoming more and more rare since I'm feeling a bit blocked. I really wish to resolve my writers block soon, but you never know how long it might last.

I'm currently reorganizing this thread so I can better explain things.

I hope to be adding more here and to my fan fic soon.

Until then Jason Wolf, Over and Out!
