Ivy pulled at her turtleneck again as the heat from the Deckbi impersonation continued. It was a little hot, but she knew that being at the real place would be worse. Besides, it was the cooler season, and the scenery would probably be changing soon anyway. With any look, she wouldn't start to sweat.

“Sorry,” Trainer apologized. “Like I said, the Ruins like to hang on to their last generated area when I'm around. Things changing back to normal was probably a fluke the last time.”

Ivy laughed a little and shook her head. “It's okay. The real Deckbi would be much worse than this anyway.”

They traveled for another few minutes before Ivy heard that strange grinding sound again, and then the area began to change. Grass bloomed under their feet, and the wispy plants seemed to go on forever. Ivy recognized the field as some place similar to the Gardens. She looked up to see it was slightly dark, though, with all the cloud cover. Maybe it was going to rain. The breeze didn't smell like water yet.

Trainer pointed out a Pokemon in the distance. A Pokemon on four legs was grazing out in the field. The grass was pretty long out there, since the blades reached its shoulders. Ivy could barely make out its form.

“Seems like this is your next encounter,” the Ranger said, and then the Pokemon revealed itself.

Ivy saw it was a Miltank as the pink cow looked up. She was peacefully chewing her food, not caring that they were watching one bit. In fact, she ignored them as she went back to eating, only sparing them a small glance.

“Wow, she seems to be more worried about filling her belly than paying us any attention.”

“No joke!” Ivy laughed. “I do know someone who is looking for a Miltank, though, so I think I'll take a shot at her.”

One of Chainy's brothers, the youngest one, was the person she was thinking of. Jathan was a Breeder, and he loved to collect all sorts of Pokemon. Every once in a while he'd send a notice in or let Chainy know he was looking for a specific Pokemon. One of Leo's brothers was a collector too, and he often did the same thing. It didn't hurt to look for other people.

She knew which Pokemon she wanted to use this time. Brin, her Conkeldurr, hadn't seen any action yet. Besides, Normal-types like Miltank were susceptible to his Fighting-type attacks. She knew the sow could take a few hits, though, so this fight wouldn't be easy. They had to be careful not to knock her out either.

“Okay, Brin, it's your turn,” she called as she pulled out his Pokeball.

In a flash of light, the fighter appeared. The Conkeldurr slowly worked his muscles, limbering up from being inside the ball for so long. The heavy concrete pillars he carried in each hand were almost as tall as he was. A lot of Pokemon were intimidated by them. Still, it wasn't a problem for the tanned Pokemon. His purple veins helped the blood flow through his body to make using the weapons possible.

“Hmm,” she mused, not calling out anything right away. Brin turned to look at her silently. He wasn't a real big talker in their group, even back home. He did nod toward Haji when he saw the purple cat.

The problem was, she didn't know which ability the Miltank had at the forefront. One protected her against Ice and Fire-type attacks, and one allowed her to see through and overcome a ghost's ability to become invisible. It was the last one that Ivy worried about slightly. It was called Sap Sipper, and it would make Grass-type moves ineffective on top of powering her up. It wasn't as if a lot of her Pokemon used those types of moves, but it would be useful to know. Since the cow was surrounded by grass, she might be able to do something weird to power herself up.

She nodded to herself. If Brin was okay with it, she wanted to find out which ability Miltank had.

“Okay, Brin, we're gonna try something different if you're up for it.” He nodded, so she continued. “I'd like to know what ability that Miltank over there has. We need to get her attention anyway, since she's preoccupied. Let's start off easy and send a Bulldoze her way. Combine it with Grass Knot too, so we can see if she's using Sap Sipper. If she is, she'll become stronger, and that'll make the battle harder for you. Is that okay?” she asked.

Brin just nodded again. There was pretty little that could phase him, since he was pretty brave too, like Candle was. Way less enthusiastic about it, though.

Bulldoze was sort of the Ground version of surf in a way. At least, that's how Ivy saw him use it. With a powerful stomp of his pillars, a wave would form under the ground and travel toward his foe. Sometimes the earth was kicked up and sent over the target, slowing them down for a little while.

The Conkeldurr would also call on the roots in the ground, and those could travel with the Bulldoze wave. He wasn't a great attacker with things like nature and that, being more physically based, but this was just a test anyway. If the Grass Knot didn't wrap around and try to trap the cow, or something equally as different happened, then Ivy would know what they were up against.

She worried a little about disturbing the Miltank, but they had to get her attention some way. Brin wasn't using his most powerful attacks yet, at least. She wanted to see how the cow was giong to react before she planned further. She knew they could be fast and creative, so this might be a challenge.

“Okay, let's see if we can get her attention,” she said, giving Brin the go ahead.

Ivy was more than willing to grab Miltank, for a friend rather than herself. It was always nice when Trainers didn’t mind catching something for someone else, rather than only catching Pokemon they themselves were strictly interested in. Once again I moved away as another breeze blew, causing the grass to ripple like emerald ocean waves. This time Ivy went with her Conkeldurr, which was probably a good choice. Miltank were not only physically strong, they could absorb a large amount of damage as well. Conkeldurr were fairly tanky, so Brin would be able to take as much as he gave.

Ivy took a few minutes to think about her options once she let her Pokemon out of his Ball, and during that time Miltank only glanced up at us as she lazily chewed on a mouthful of grass. It was somewhat amazing how completely unconcerned she was with our presence; Miltank were generally peaceful creatures, but they also usually held a sense of curiosity for new things in their environment. Maybe this particular Miltank was just a bit…slow? Either way, it wasn’t long before she dipped her head back down to get another mouthful of grass.

“Okay, Brin, we're gonna try something different if you're up for it,” Ivy said, apparently coming up with an idea. Is that okay?” The Conkeldurr nodded in response, seemingly unruffled by what must have been a new tactic. “Okay, let's see if we can get her attention,” the Trainer finished, signaling that it was time to start.

Brin wasted no time, lifting his massive concrete pillars and slamming them into the ground. The shock waves when they hit the ground caused a sort of wave to ripple outwards, aimed straight at Miltank. When the wave was a few feet from Miltank, the grass and flowers abruptly grew several feet, lashing themselves together into vine-like clusters. The Bulldoze struck Miltank first; the Grass Knot then entangled her legs and hooves as she was sent tumbling a few feet.

Much to my surprise, Miltank didn’t act at all shocked or distressed over her current situation. She rolled into a sitting position and blinked absently, licking her lips with a thick tongue and glancing at the thick cords of grass holding her prisoner. She stared at them for several moments before ducking her head down and starting to chew on one of the cords around her right forehoof.

“She’s…eating Brin’s attack,” I said, my voice blank. I’d never seen anything like this in my years of running the Park. “That’s certainly unexpected. It’s almost like she didn’t just get attacked.” Even as I spoke, the cow hefted herself to her hind hooves. She was held in place by the Grass Knot still wrapped around her other three legs (she’d chewed the right forehoof free by now), but she had a small range of motion. Almost as if it were an afterthought, she curled her freed hoof inward and threw her weight towards the ground, punching her “fist” into the soft earth. A wave like the one Brin had unleashed earlier tore towards the Conkeldurr. He didn’t have time to dodge, since the return Bulldoze was so unexpected, and the shifting ground caused him to stumble back when the attack hit.

“Well, she might not have Sap Sipper, but Grass moves hardly seem to bother her,” I said after a moment, watching in disbelief as Miltank swallowed the mouthful of grass she’d gotten from freeing her hoof. “This seems like it’ll be an interesting battle, to say the least.”

Ivy watched Brin's attack wash over the cow, and the result wasn't quite what she expected. The vines came and wrapped around the Miltank, but she didn't freak out. She rolled up to the sitting position that most people associated with when she battled, and just stared at the plants. Then, to Ivy's surprise, she dipped her head down and started chewing on them just like they had been the wild blades she was munching on before.

“She's.... eating Brin's attack,” Trainer said, and all Ivy could do was nod. As they watched, the vines started to disappear into her stomach. Ivy just hoped she wasn't gaining strength from them. “It's almost like she didn't just get attacked,” the Ranger commented, and that's what worried her. Brin wasn't a great special attacker as it was, but she didn't want the attack to be ineffective either.

Then, the cow managed to free a leg enough to slam the hoof to the floor. The ground rippled in response, and a wave of dirt came flying at Brin. It was the same Bulldoze technique he had just used. Unfortunately, the Conkeldurr was not a fast mover in hardly anything. He made up for that with his sturdiness. Still, Ivy felt a little bad as she watched him get bowled over by the force of the dirt.

He got up without too much of a fuss, using his heavy pillars to brace himself as he stood. He didn't look too damaged by the attack.

“Well, she might not have Sap Sipper, but Grass moves hardly seem to bother her.”

“Lucky for us, Brin doesn't use a lot of those anyway,” Ivy said. She was pretty relieved she hadn't made this battle harder for Brin on a whim, even if she knew he'd be okay with it. Sometimes she worried about what she asked him to do since he hadn't been on the team that long compared to some of the others. She hadn't raised him up – instead he had joined when he was already a Conkeldurr.

It was a little strange, how they met. Ever since the threat of poachers had become more common in the Park, Ivy had taken up relearning self defense. If she had time, she would've taken formal classes in Veilstone or somewhere close to her home, but she worked too much for that. Instead, she did basic movements and strength training that she found in videos and articles on the internet. She had taken a little Tae Kwan Do and Judo when she was younger, before she seriously became a Ranger, so she often practiced things she remembered and did refreshers on moves she didn't.

Her favorite place to exercise was near her childhood home, even if she hated to be at that house. Most of the time she avoided going to the place entirely, instead trailing through the woods of Eterna that surrounded her property and heading up into Mount Coronet. The rocky terrain was extra incentive to perform routines correctly so she didn't fall onto the dangerous ground.

She used to spend entire days up there, when she wasn't working. It didn't happen too often, but for a while she was managing to get away at least once a week. That was when she met Brin for the first time.

She didn't see a lot of wild Pokemon up on the mountain when she was there, probably due to the fact that Trainers often scared them away. One time, however, as she was locked in a pose, she felt eyes on her. When she looked, she had seen the Conkeldurr eying her from a higher rock shelf. She hadn't stopped her training and he hadn't made any motions to either fight or join, so they left each other alone. That had happened a couple times.

Then, one time it occurred in reverse, and it was Ivy that stumbled along the fighter. He was being bombarded by Zubat from a nearby cave. She figured a hiker or other Trainer must've spooked them, and when they came out into the light, they went after the first thing they sensed.

He had been waving his pillars to try and get them to leave him alone, but he didn't move as fast as the bats. Being a Ranger, she didn't want to hurt them, but she also hadn't wanted the Conkeldurr to suffer. What she had done was put her fingers up to her lips and whistle, making the sound bounce off the rocks and all around the area she was in. Then, when they had freaked out, she released Haxbat so he could chase them back into the cave they came from. The extra noise had confused them, since Zubat could only 'see' with their sonar abilities.

The fighter had been impressed with both how she got rid of the pests, but her Crobat's maneuverability. They had trained together then, and Brin had actually managed to beat her bat after a couple attempts, using a helpful technique she was going to implement now.

When Ivy had asked them to join their team, he had accepted without hesitating. Through their training she had earned his trust, and that hadn't stopped. A lot of people thought Brin was slow in the mind because he moved his body that way, but she thought he was one of the wisest of her party. He was probably one of the oldest too, but she hadn't asked him.

Vergil, her Gallade, hadn't been very pleased about other fighter hanging around, but Vergil was rarely happy about anything. He hadn't picked a fight with the older one yet, thankfully, and she was hoping to keep it that way. It was a good thing that Brin knew better than to rise to the Gallade's taunts.

“Okay, Brin, start using Bulk Up so you can take some of these hits better. She can still attack you long range and with elemental attacks, but we'll need the power when you get in close.” Bulk Up was a technique that loosened up his muscles and allowed his veins to grow, increasing the blood flow in his body to make him both more powerful and able to handle more hits.

“Next, I want you to get ready to Counter anything she throws at you. If she keeps her distance, focus on using a Drain Punch instead. As long as we don't knock her out, we'll be okay. A nice, solid hit should start wearing her down.”

Counter would let Brin do exactly that: launch a counterattack after being attacked. Ivy had a feeling that this cow probably wasn't going to venture too close right away, if at all, though. She had been keeping her distance so far along with mostly ignoring them, so eventually Brin was going to have to move in an attack. He wouldn't do it that fast, which slightly worried her. Thankfully, Drain Punch was an energy-sapping technique, so if Brin got super damaged, he'd be able to get a little of that strength back.

Ivy wasn't too worried about battling quickly, since that wasn't how Brin rolled. She would see what the cow was doing next, and then she'd plan her next move. Brin still had a few tricks up his sleeves that they could use if none of this worked out.

Ivy seemed momentarily distracted, or perhaps caught in a memory or something. Either that or she was contemplating what to do about Miltank. The bovine herself was clearly not very concerned with things, idly scratching the side of her head and yawning hugely. Either she was bored or completely unfamiliar with battling. She then began to chew on the grass ropes around her left forehoof, one ear twitching as a fly or some other insect landed on it. I simply shook my head at the Pokemon’s complete lack of motivation to strike Brin before he attacked again. It didn’t really matter much since, after a few moments Ivy seemed ready to continue.

“Okay, Brin, start using Bulk Up so you can take some of these hits better. She can still attack you long range and with elemental attacks, but we'll need the power when you get in close,” the Trainer told her Pokemon. “Next, I want you to get ready to Counter anything she throws at you. If she keeps her distance, focus on using a Drain Punch instead. As long as we don't knock her out, we'll be okay. A nice, solid hit should start wearing her down.”

Brin just nodded before raise his concrete cylinders and thumping them into the ground hard enough to toss of bits of grass and dirt. His grip on the cylinders tightened a bit before relaxing; I could tell by his posture that his entire body was less tense. As a result of his slackened muscles, the blood flow to those muscles was increased, making them spongier and giving them more elasticity. This, in turn, would allow Brin to absorb more damage from the impact of Miltank’s attacks, as well as letting his body store more energy for his own moves.

For a moment the fighter waited, eyeing his adversary for any sign of reaction. When the bovine simply stared at him and took another bite out of the grass rope, Brin took it as a sign that the cow wasn’t going to bother trying to get her back legs free just yet and was content to simply sit there. He then raised his pillars and charged towards Miltank. He wasn’t moving very quickly, but there was a great deal of mass lending him momentum. When he got within striking distance he slammed his right pillar into the ground with enough force to sink it into the dirt at least a foot. It remained upright when he released it, curling his hand into a massive fist and throwing it at Miltank’s stomach. The blow was a solid hit that knocked Miltank flat on her back; it looked like, for a moment, she’d actually been knocked out.

But then she surged to her back hooves, head ducked down and small horns forward. The top of her skull smashed into Brin’s chest, causing him to stumble back several paces. He scowled for a moment before retrieving his pillar as Miltank shifted her weight backwards, staring at Brin before abruptly yawning again. She made a shrugging motion and tumbled back onto her rear, though it seemed she was drooping a bit now. She bit down on the last few threads of the grass rope around her forehoof and shook her leg once it was free, rolling her shoulders a bit and chewing on the grass in a lazy manner. The whole time, though, her eyes never left her opponent.

“It seems like Miltank is paying a bit more attention to Brin now,” I commented. “Though whether that’s a good or bad thing remains to be seen.”

It looked like the Miltank was capable of taking a lot of hits, even though she seemed like she was starting to wear out slightly. Granted, Brin wasn't operating at full strength because they didn't want to knock the cow out, but it was still impressive. Ivy would make sure Jathan paid dearly for her, and a voice in the back of her mind chuckled. Sometimes it was fun to see just how she unnerved the younger man.

The bovine was finally starting to pay more attention to them too, but Ivy didn't know if that was a good thing. In a way, it mostly was. At least with her moving around and acting, she could judge how much strength she had left and how hard to instruct Brin to hit. On the other, she didn't want the fighter to take too much damage either. She didn't know how much longer they were going to be in the Ruins, but they had barely started, and she didn't want to wear him out too early on. Even if they had captured three out of the four Pokemon allowed to take out of the Park, that didn't mean they would only battle four.

“Okay out there, Brin?” she called, but the fighter only nodded without looking back at her. He never was one for much talk, unlike Candle who never seemed to stop. They were a unique mix back at her apartment.

Ivy was at a bit of a loss as to what to do next. They needed to weaken the cow a little more, but she was unsure with what. She had proved capable of taking strong hits, but she was slightly worried that increasing Brin's hitting power too much would knock her out. She definitely wasn't going to stay in a Park Ball at her current energy level. Ivy wasn't even sure if she would when she was worn out. She might need to call on Haji to try and lull the bovine into sleep later.

“Brin speaks,” Haji suddenly said against her mind, the words coming in like they were a little cloudy. That meant that Haji was engaged in conversation with the fighter because otherwise his voice was crystal clear in her head.

Haji also didn't mean Brin was talking directly, since although not dumb, the Conkeldurr didn't think in smooth words and phrases like a lot of Psychic-types did. He usually thought in images and memories instead, which was really weird sometimes when communicating mind to mind, since he often showed her things that happened, only from his point of view. Sometimes those images were of her, and it was strange to see herself that way.

The Espeon was their connecting cable as a flutter of images clouded over her mind, complete with the white haze around the edges of them. She was suddenly moving through a grassy field, holding a large concrete pillar, only to slam it down and stretch out her arm, connecting with the belly of the Miltank.

Ivy blinked, but the image didn't dissipate or become hidden for a minute. She could see it with her eyes open or closed. It was strange, seeing the actual field in front of her while watching the back of her Pokemon while seeing his memory of it.

The memory focused in on the cow falling backwards though. It almost seemed to slow down as she rocked on her back for that very small window of vulnerability, and she realized that's what Brin was trying to emphasize. Maybe Haji had relayed her thoughts to him about switching in to put her to sleep? That would make sense if he was trying to find a safer opening for the Espeon.

“Great idea, Brin,” she called as the vision faded. “I think we'll use that soon. First, we need to wear out this Miltank a little more. Let's start out with an Earthquake, but only use it around half strength. We don't want to take down the Ruin walls or anything, even if we can't see them right now.”

Even at half power, when Brin slammed down his pillars into the ground, it would still give quite a shake to the area. She was more hoping that pieces of the ground would break up and give Brin some ammunition for his next technique.

“Hopefully the Miltank will be stunned a little bit from the quake, and then I want you to pick up some of the loose pieces of ground and throw them at her with a Rock Throw.”

She didn't anticipate the attacks doing too much damage to the cow, but something was better than nothing. She just had to bide a little time so that Haji could have the opportunity to come in.

“Okay out there, Brin?” Ivy called, and Brin simply nodded. He didn’t look too badly put out, most likely because whatever damage Miltank’s Reversal did was negated by Brin’s Drain Punch. For now it seemed the Conkeldurr had the upper hand, since he clearly had more energy to continue battling than Miltank did, but of course things could change with one move. After all, Miltank were famous for their Milk Drink technique, in which they used their own milk for nourishment to regain HP. This Miltank didn’t seem to care enough to replenish her strength, or maybe she was just crafty and waiting until she really needed to use it.

There was a moment of silence as Ivy stared at the battlefield. I thought she was trying to come up with a way to carry on with the battle without hitting too hard when she abruptly called out, “Great idea, Brin.” I blinked in surprise, then shrugged. Conkeldurr were hardly capable of telepathy, but Ivy did have her Espeon with her, and he was still out of his Ball. He’d most likely relayed some kind of plan or tactic from Brin to Ivy. “I think we'll use that soon. First, we need to wear out this Miltank a little more. Let's start out with an Earthquake, but only use it around half strength. We don't want to take down the Ruin walls or anything, even if we can't see them right now. Hopefully the Miltank will be stunned a little bit from the quake, and then I want you to pick up some of the loose pieces of ground and throw them at her with a Rock Throw.”

I wondered what kind of plan had been whipped up but didn’t dwell on it for too long. After all, I’d most likely find out what it was soon, since the battle seemed to be winding down. Judging by Miltank’s posture, she wouldn’t be taking too awfully many more hits. Her ears flicked as Brin inclined his head at Ivy’s words, raising his concrete cylinders as high as his arms could stretch. Before Miltank could try and stop him, the Conkeldurr slammed the pillars into the ground with enough force to set the ground atremble. I’d seen wild Conkeldurr use Earthquake and knew that even though Brin’s execution was powerful, it was nowhere near as strong as it could have been. After all, Ivy had said to only go with about half of the move’s normal power.

The shaking caused several large fissure to tear themselves into the unsteady ground, and Miltank was sent tumbling when a fissure split open right under her, the force of parting earth knocking her back. The grassy restraints around her back legs were snapped by the Earthquake as well, freeing her from it completely. For a moment she laid on her back, clearly stunned, but it didn’t take her long to recover and realize she was no longer being held by the Grass Knot. She rolled onto her stomach and pushed herself onto all four hooves before heaving her weight upwards and taking the famous bipedal stance Miltank were known for.

By this time Brin had planted both of his pillars in the ground, grabbing large chunks of dirt and rock that had been torn free by his Earthquake. He hefted the debris in both hands as Miltank shifted her weight, twisting her upper body to the left and stretching out her forelegs. She then started to spin, rapidly picking up speed until she was a pink blur. It was a miracle how Pokemon didn’t pass out from doing things like that, but their bodies were structured to withstand the pressures and strains and battling.

At the same time Brin lobbed the debris he was holding, Miltank shot forward in a literal whirlwind of motion. The dirt-and-rock clump hit its target and broke apart; Miltank’s spinning caused the smaller bits to go flying in all directions. She was also pushed back a bit by the strength of the Rock Throw, but she soon found her momentum and was moving forward again. Before Brin could grab his pillars to use as a means of defense, Miltank closed the distance between them and careened into the larger Pokemon.

The impact of the Gyro Ball caused Brin to stagger back a few steps, but he managed to stay on his feet. He didn’t look too damaged, just a little winded, and his early Bulk Up was probably to thank for letting him absorb the momentum with minimal HP loss. Miltank, on the other hand, was tossed onto her back from the impact. She laid there for several seconds before finally rolling into a sitting position, looking considerably weaker than before the exchange. She sat in a slumped position, not the normal upright, alert position Miltank normally adopt when sitting on their haunches. She watched Brin as he went to retrieve his pillars before moving back so there were several feet between the two of them, but despite everything, still seemed content to let the Fighter move first rather than trying to launch an attack of her own.

“Nice work, Brin!” Ivy called as she watched the bovine slowly rocked back into her half-sitting battle position. She was definitely looked tired now, which was good for what Ivy planned to do next. She wanted to end this battle.

The Miltank wasn't moving in to attack Brin right away either, which further forecasted her worn-out status. At least that meant she didn't have to worry too much about her Pokemon getting severely damaged. She expected another attack or two, but she hoped to wrap this up before the Miltank suddenly got a battle spark.

Ivy pulled out a Park Ball from her front vest pocket and hit the button to expand the device. She wasn't going to throw it just yet, but very soon. She palmed it in her right hand as she

“Okay, Brin, now we're gonna do what you showed me. Dart in quick with a Mach Punch, but focus more on knocking her down and off-balance than doing damage. I want an easy-in for Haji. Then get back here. You did great.” With her left hand, she unclipped the Conkeldurr's Pokeball from her utility belt so she could call him back after his attack.

Then she looked down at her purple cat who had his senses focused sharply on the battlefield. “Okay,” she started. “When I call him back, I need you to step in and use Yawn. Miltank's pretty worn out, so just a little more should make her easier to capture. I would expect some sort of attack from her though, so be careful.”

Haji nodded and filled her mind with confident feelings. He never really got worried about anything, always staying calm and peaceful. It really helped her sometimes. The Psychic-type tensed a little, preparing to spring into battle.

Yawn was a bit of a strange move, involving literally yawning out a thin, filmy bubble that was pink in color. If it managed to hit the Miltank, when it popped it would instantly make her drowsy and thus less likely to fight the power of the capture device. Even if this move didn't work, she was still going to try her luck.

Then, she waited for her Pokemon to act so she could attempt the throw.

It seemed Ivy was ready to wrap the battle up and try catching Miltank. She took out a ParkBall and expanded it but held on to it for the time being, wanting to wear the bovine down a bit more before attempting the capture. She congratulated Brin for a job well done and gave him his final command of the fight; a Mach Punch to leave Miltank momentarily dazed, so Haji would have a chance to step in and try to lull Miltank to sleep with a Yawn. If it worked, the slumbering cow would be easier to capture than if she were still awake, even while being weakened.

Brin rushed forward without giving Miltank time to realize what was going on, jabbing the cylinder in his right hand at her before she could try to counter or dodge. The heavy concrete pillar caught Miltank between her chest and stomach, knocking her flat on her back and leaving her stunned. Ivy wasted no time recalling her Pokemon, and a moment later I saw Haji leap to his feet and race to take his teammate’s place. The lavender feline stopped a few feet from the dazed Miltank, his jaws opening and eyes scrunching shut as he heaved out a tired-sounding yawn. A filmy pink bubble emerged from his open mouth, floating lazily through the air towards Miltank as she struggled to sit up. Just as she managed, the pink bubble lightly collided with her chest, popping on contact. Miltank blinked, surprised, then released a huge yawn of her own. She shook her head, trying to clear the drowsiness that had gripped her, but seemed to be incapable of fighting the sudden tiredness. She also looked pretty low on energy, which most likely didn’t help her resist the influence of Haji’s Yawn; the cow was probably already pretty fatigued to begin with.

Miltank’s eyes slid shut and her head started to fall, but she abruptly snapped back awake. Shaking her head again, she blinked and tried to focus on Haji. It was a losing battle, though, as her head slowly started to fall again. It was at this point I saw a ParkBall come into view, bouncing off Miltank’s belly and drawing the cow into it. The sphere landed on the ground where it shook feebly a few times, then fell still. I was hardly surprised that Miltank didn’t manage to break free, since she was pretty worn out.

Bloodstone leaped off my shoulder and sashayed over to the ParkBall, snatching it up and scampering back to me as he chattered merrily. I took the Ball as he climbed up my leg and side, perching once more on my shoulder. I put the Ball in my pack and nodded towards Haji.

“Well that turned out fairly well, I think. It’s a good thing Miltank was so tired from battling Brin all this time or else she might have been able to counter after that Yawn. Now, would you like to keep moving, or take a few minutes to rest first?”

Ivy breathed a sigh of relief as the capture device clicked close. The Sableye scurried over in no time to pick up the ball and return it to his Trainer. He scrambled up Trainer's body to shit on her shoulder, upon which she took the ball from him and pocketed it for safe keeping.

She turned to Ivy and said, “Well that turned out fairly well, I think. It's a good thing Miltank was so tired from battling Brin all this time or else she might have been able to counter after that Yawn. Now, would you like to keep moving or take a few minutes to rest first?”

“Yeah, I was surprised she didn't make a move to attack Haji. She must've been more tired than I thought. I think we're okay to keep going, unless you want a break, Haji?” she asked as she looked at her purple cat. He serenely shook his head and sat back down next to her, looking no worse for the wear. “Okay, let's head out then. Brin will rest in his Pokeball for now – he's definitely earned his rest.”

I wasn’t surprised when Ivy said she’d prefer to keep going, since she hadn’t wanted to rest after the previous two battles either. I nodded and we headed off, the replicated Botanic Gardens a pleasant change after the heat of Mt. Deckbi. However, we’d only gone perhaps five or six yards when the area abruptly started to warp. When it was finished we were faced with yet another extreme, though this one was quite the opposite of Deckbi. Now we stood maybe thirty feet from the base of an ice-capped mountain, a snowy tundra spread before us in all directions. Leafless trees and tough little bushes dotted the landscape, and a soft yet chilly breeze was blowing. In fact, the general temperature had dropped by a significant amount; my breath now plumed visibly as I breathed out. A shiver found me, but I managed to push aside my discomfort when I spotted a bipedal lizard about the size of a toddler digging into the snow about five feet away. It clearly hadn’t noticed us yet, probably intent on finding something to eat. Its upper body was brown while its lower body was yellow; the yellow scales were loose and sagging.

“I’ll never understand why Fighting Pokemon chose to live here rather than somewhere a little warmer,” I sighed. “I’m sure they could train themselves just as well somewhere with a bit of sunshine.” I then chuckled a little and waved towards the Scraggy I’d noticed as Bloodstone chittered irritably because of the cold weather. “Ah well, we’re here at any rate. Feeling up to trying for that little fella over there?”

Ivy wasn't surprised when the scenery suddenly changed this time. The temperature plummeted, and snow appeared all around them. They were standing beneath the shadow of Mount Oktori. She remembered many runs in this place, including the one where a crazed Froslass had tried to possess her. That hadn't been fun.

There was a Pokemon here too. It stood out sharply against the white snow. It was a little orange lizard with bottom skin that looked like pants. The Scraggy was digging around in the snow, maybe looking for something.

Trainer sighed. “I'll never understand why Fighting Pokemon chose to live here rather than somewhere a little warmer. I'm sure they could train themselves just as well somewhere with a bit of sunshine.”

Ivy smiled. “The cold is great for stamina. Just ask, Brin. At any rate, I'm not looking for any more Fighting-types at the moment, so let's keep going if possible.”

She could just imagine Vergil's face if another fighter showed up. It didn't sound very good.

Ivy opted against battling Scraggy, which was completely oblivious to our presence as we started walking the other way. It only took a few minutes for the area to revert back to the normal sprawling network of tunnels and rooms that was the Ruins, for which I was grateful. I wasn’t really feeling up to traipsing around in the cold longer than I had to. I made a mental note to myself to start bringing at least a jacket whenever leading people through the Ruins.

We’d only gone down one hallway when the scene around us shifted yet again, this time taking on the form of the Great Lakes. It was warm and sunny, with just a faint breeze blowing. It was bright because of the water reflecting off the surface of several dozen large ponds, though, and I raised a hand to shield my eyes from the harsh glow.

“This place seem familiar?” I asked with a smile, wondering how many other Pokemon would be getting pulled in from the Lakes for Ivy’s run. I then saw movement near one of the closest ponds and focused on it; it turned out to be a large white seal lying on its back, basking in the sunlight. It had a small horn atop its head and its jaws were open a bit, its tongue lolling out. It looked like it was napping, but after a moment it shifted again and heaved itself onto its belly. It opened its eyes and blinked in surprise when it saw us.

    “Ever wanted a Seel?”

Soon, the environment changed again, shifting so that a warm breeze blew through the area and lifted Ivy's long, red hair slightly. Her vest ruffled in the wind, and she had to shield her eyes for a minute as an intense sunlight glinted off of the pool of water that had appeared. As she looked, she saw many others, signifying that they were now in a Great Lakes replica.

“This place seem familiar?” Trainer asked, and Ivy just shook her head and smiled.

“More so than I care to admit. At least this time it's more beach-like and we're not knee-deep in water,” she said. Not only had she already battled a Pokemon in this type of scenery, but she had also been to the real Lakes many times as Trainers hunted for commonly-sought Water-types.

“Ever wanted a Seel?” the Ranger asked while pointing out the Pokemon that looked to be napping in the sun. It was pure white, and its pink tongue was hanging out of its mouth as it slept. Soon though, it noticed them and flipped over so it was upright, blinding at them blearily.

Ivy shook her head. “Nah, Water-types are hard to keep at my apartment. It'll be hard enough with this Horsea I captured. I think I'll pass if we can. I can use a doll if needed. Hey there, little guy,” she said in greeting, smiling and waving at the still-sleepy creature, hoping to appease it somewhat so it would let them pass.

Ivy decided against battling Seel, mostly because of limitations where she lived. Unless she had a spare bathroom with a huge tub for a Dewgong to swim in, or a pool of some kind, I could understand why she was passing it up. The Seel simply stared at us for a few moments before scooting its way into the closest lake. I watched it go before heading off once more, and this time we barely got ten steps before the area started to shift. It soon settled, once again the normal Ruins, but it only stayed like that for perhaps a second before changing once again. The area became more shadowy and dark, but there were patches of glowing blue-green moss on the walls that now helped light the way a bit. The walls also closed in a bit and the ceiling dropped, forming a small cave around us that was uncomfortably warm and rather humid. I waved a hand in a futile effort to cool myself, then noticed movement in the dim light being given off by the moss.

I moved a bit closer and saw a dull-blue shape pressed against the wall nearby. I scowled a little as I watched it, and sure enough it twitched again, sort of swaying back and forth a little. It then abruptly flew back away from the wall, hovering in midair as it spun like a crazy top. I hastily stepped back a few steps, but the thing, which I could now tell was a Bronzor, made no moves to attack as it finally fell still facing us. Its front had been pressed against the rock, which is why I hadn’t been able to identify it right away in the poor light.

“How do you feel about a Bronzor?” I asked Ivy, glancing over at her while also keeping an eye on the levitating Pokemon, just to make sure it didn’t try anything.

@Dog of Hellsing; Make it a- oh wait. It's genderless :(

The Seel wasn't very interested in them, so after checking them out, it slid back into the water, apparently done sun bathing for the day. That was fine with Ivy. Sometimes she hated disappointing the wild Pokemon, since a lot of them were so eager to battle or just interact with someone else. A lot of Pokemon went isolated for quite a long time. She hated even worse to have to battle them to escape, however, since that sort of went against her job. She used a doll whenever possible.

They continued on, and the area changed almost immediately. The lakes faded away, and the sunshine ceased. In fact, it became rather dark and shadowy, and even though there was hardly anything to see, Ivy knew these rocks. She knew Deckbi like the back of her hand. So many Trainers had gone there with her, looking for the rare and powerful Pokemon everyone sought on the mainland, like Drillbur or Volcarona.

Suddenly, she heard a whisper, or at least what she thought was a whisper. She couldn't quite make out the words. An image followed, one that didn't look familiar to her. It was fuzzy, and she could only make out rough, dark shapes lit up by light. The scene faded as soon as it appeared almost, and Ivy felt a wave of nausea come across her.

She put a hand out to steady herself on the wall, and her hand touched some of that fuzzy blue-green moss that tended to grow in Deckbi's tunnels. She hadn't felt anything like that since...

“Was that from a Psychic Pokemon?” she asked Haji inside her mind. She didn't want Trainer to think she was going soft or anything. Or crazy.

Haji had gone very hyper-aware, with his ears twitching and standing at his full height. “Indeed,” he answered, watching the area carefully.

“Great. I hope this isn't a repeat of last time.” The last time she went to Deckbi on a personal run, she and Haji's mental bond had just been settling in, and it had caused her to go crazy for a little bit, lost in her own mind as the energies settled down. Usually, that wasn't something that happened. She was one of the lucky ones.

She continued to follow Trainer through the cave, trying to ignore the fuzzy images that kept popping up. It was weird because she could still see what was happening in front of her; the mental picture was sort of transparent and lain over her main sight. They were all of the same thing, though. They all looked like images one would see here, in Mount Deckbi – the real one, at least.

Ivy felt Trainer's step change, like she had noticed something ahead. She wasn't close enough to see what had caught the woman's attention, however, so she waited. Then, she saw a blue shape fly off the wall and start spinning around and around. When it finally mostly stopped, Ivy caught glance of a blueish disk with a face on it.

“How do you feel about a Bronzor?” the Ranger asked, and Ivy had to consider it.

Haji had gone tense beside her, and he began to say something in her mind when another image assaulted her first. This time, she recognized the place. It wasn't blurry anymore. It was at the top of the volcano, on the rock shelf that edged around the opening. She had taken a Trainer named Synthesis up there where he ended up battling a Volcarona.

In fact, that's what she was seeing, only it wasn't from her perspective. She could see the form of her red canvas vest and her red hair as she stood on the rock ledge with Haji beside her. It was really weird seeing it like that, something she remembered by someone else's sight. Then, a multitude of other images followed, all too fast for her to really get a feel for specifics. She did notice that she was in all of them, however, highlighted by her red vest every time.

Were these the Bronzor's memories? Had it been watching them when they came to the mountain? She supposed she was there enough for it to be probable. Now that she focused too, she could feel a happy sort of emotion, and she was pretty sure it wasn't coming from Haji. The purple cat shook his head negative.

Ivy stepped up a little closer. “I think this Bronzor has been following me around on the mountain. I'm not sure how or why, but it's probably for a reason. I want to find out what it is, so I will battle,” she said.

She was going to need a Pokemon more suited to the energy-filled attacks rather than brute force here, since the Steel-type's defenses were really good. Thankfully she had a mix of both styles with her.

Not so surprisingly, Haji stepped out with her, willing to fight. Technically, it was his turn, even if he had helped Brin a little in the last one. He was probably the freshest, so she decided not to argue with them. Besides, Haji was a good fire worker, and that was one of the Bronzor's weaknesses. He might not be as good as Candle, but for not being Fire-type, Ivy thought he was amazing.

Of course, there was always the chance that this Pokemon had its Heatproof ability active, making it resist Fire-type attacks more than normal by reinforcing its coat. It tended to Levitate a lot as well, making it pretty hard to hit in battle. This would probably be interesting.

“Okay, Haji, I don't really have a plan this time, but let's start of strong. With any luck, we can make this fast. I think I feel a headache coming on.”

Thanks to all of the image sharing, she fell that dull buzzing in the back of her mind, and she had a feeling it was going to get stronger. After the first Deckbi incident, she was out sick for two weeks, and during that time, her head had burned like it was imploding. If she was going to get sick again, which was highly possible since Bronzor was a wild Pokemon, she didn't want to be in the middle of a run when it happened.

Ivy addressed the Bronzor. “You've been following me, haven't you? Well, since you want a fight, we'll give you one!” She turned back to Haji as she smiled, trying to get into the battle as much as possible. She thought maybe that was her problem with Vergil, since he loved to fight and she really didn't do it that often. She was going to use this as a learning experience, and maybe their relationship would improve.

“Haji, let's make this place really seem like Deckbi. Turn up the heat with a Sunny Day.”

She remembered the day when she was with Synthesis. The air had been boiling up there near the volcano opening. The lava had bubbled and popped in the deep bit below, and the turtleneck she was wearing had pretty much been painted onto her skin. Haji collected all of these thoughts through their psychic connection, and she hoped he would channel that feeling into his technique to really light this place up. She could endure the warmth for a little while.

“Then, strike hard with your Hidden Power. I guess we'll see if this one is more resistant to heat or not,” she said. “I can't really plan any more ahead than that, since I'm not sure of the Bronzor's style yet. I don't think you'll knock out the disk on your first shot. You know how to gauge it,” she reminded him, just in case.

The Espeon's Hidden Power type was Fire. Under the sun, he was pretty deadly. He could conjure orbs of flame, somewhat like Candle's Will-o-Wisps, and they hit pretty hard when powered up by the sun. He was probably her strongest battler, although that wasn't really because of this skill.

She felt his energy rise as Haji's eyes started to glow, preparing to create a miniature sun in the sky. This hallway was going to get bright, and probably stifling too. The hair on her arms stood up as his energy reached a peak, and then he started to move.
