    Default Youtube Embedding

I don't know whether this has been asked already, or is not possible to do, but I would be nice if we could embed Youtube videos.

I'm voting UP this one. I find it weird that this vB3 forum doesn't support it. Is it a plugin?

There are tags in vBulletin that allow you to embed videos in posts. There's even a youtube specific one.

Currently moderators and up have the ability to do so.

I am however, going to vote this idea DOWN. Honestly I think there would be issues with copyright, spam and advertising. I can already see some new users trying to post episodes into the animé threads, just to get their channel seen. Links to "funny" videos akin to memes in posts. Spambots going to a new level of advertising with videos. I think it would be a lot of work for the moderators having to view the videos to check if they don't break any rules as well.

...You know, when users act well, all this won't happen. All we need is a reminder to them when we allow video embedding. I don't think a certain other forum has issues regarding the use of said tags. After all, it's not the tag's fault - it's the user.

You would still need someone to watch every second of the video, to see if any part of it breaks one of the current rules. I don't think a moderator watching a 10 minute video is a good use of their time.

Also, is every user going to check if the video that they are posting abides by copyright? Even if it is that man going "Yeeeeees!" for 2 seconds? I'm sure that somebody owns that.

This one I'm not too sure on: The recommendations once the video ends. Can you control if recomendations are on or not? If you can't, then there might be links to videos that do break the rules, even if the embedded video doesn't.

If we're only talking about YouTube videos, it's part of the EULA you sign with YouTube when signing up that anyone can embed you're videos, and the same holds true with most video sites. If there's an embed code, you can embed it, there's no copyright issue.

We should instate a total length limit first, of course.

As for videos that break the rules... it works like offending posts - report it. It might be slower that way, but it beats no videos.

Abides by copyright... fair use. Though, there may be a hhazy line on "fair use"... if it's just not too long, like 30 seconds or so, it might work well for us. As for the whole thing, nah, not allowed.

Recommendations? That, we can't control. I think we shouldn't bother with the recommendations - it's not the user's choice. It's not done by the user.

Just as an FYI, embedding a YouTube video on a page will make that page load slower (especially for those of us with slow connections) than if the YouTube video is just linked to with the [url] BBCode.

The original video still may be violating copyright. I didn't mean that the act of embedding would cause copyright. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough.

And, how would it be done?

As for videos that break the rules... it works like offending posts - report it. It might be slower that way, but it beats no videos.
But a mod will still have to watch it to see if it breaks any rules and find if it does violate copyright. It's something that will take up their time for something, that no one yet, has actually provided a use for videos being on our site.

Seriously, what will these videos be used for?

Abides by copyright... fair use. Though, there may be a hhazy line on "fair use"... if it's just not too long, like 30 seconds or so, it might work well for us. As for the whole thing, nah, not allowed.
Exactly, there's no fine line on what is allowed so why take such a risk? Also, "might work well for us"? I think this idea hasn't been researched into, otherwise these fear would have been answered in the first post.

Recommendations? That, we can't control. I think we shouldn't bother with the recommendations - it's not the user's choice. It's not done by the user.
But it's still there, and if we have no control over something that could link to videos that would break the rules, then the solution is not having that something.

This is a good point. For users on mobile devices, this will be even more of a problem. Also, why can't we just simply link to a video if we really must? Embedding doesn't save anyone any time or increase productivity. I don't think there has actually been any reason for needing to embed videos.

Cairo, By (Australian) law, youtube would be held accountable, not us, for any copyrigth infringement. Not so sure about US law.

You can legally have 30 seconds or 10% of the video, whichever is greater without breaking copyright as well. And if the video is linked from the copyright holder and embedding is enabled, then it is completely legal

The server is based in the US. US law would need to be looked into.

As Blazevoir has said though, if it does abide by copyright law, can you not simply post a link to the video? We know there are users on mobile devices who would not want to be slowed down further (given that these devices are more limited than a standard computer) from here.

The US DMCA Safe Harbor provision says that neither BMG or YouTube can be held responsible for the videos, only the original uploader. That's why sites like The Pirate Bay are still around, but that's off topic.

Hmm... I think we also need an option to remove embed tags for slower PCs/browsers/phones. Is it possible?
