Default IDEA: An official guide to measuring signatures.

My proposal: A simple, straightforward step-by-step guide with pictures that users can follow in order to check if their signature violates the signature rules. It would be available to view on the signature rules thread.

Tools required: Image editing software that can work across various browsers and operating systems.

    I recommend http://pixlr.com/editor/
It is web-based (so no issue with operating systems) and means that users do not have to download software onto their harddrives. It's also free and doesn't require any registering!

Steps: Simple and easy for users to understand. They should be as basic and short as possible to simplify the process as well as reducing the amount of time it takes to do the process.

    I recommend:

    - Print screen while viewing your signature.
    - Click on the pixlr link.
    - On the first menu, choose "Create a new image". On the menu that appears after that, click on "OK".
    - Go to "Edit" and then "Paste". Your screenshot will appear.
    - On the Marquee tool, outline your signature.
    - Look at the dimensions and determine if your signature is a violation or not.

Voted Up. Signature rule violations are among the most common infractions. A guide wouldn't eliminate the problem, but I'm sure it'd help.

Voted UP I normally don't have pictures in my signature, but this does sound like a very useful idea.

I vote UP. I think this could considerably reduce the number of signature rule violations.

I vote this UP. The guide that I created a long time ago helped a little bit, but it was still unofficial.

Up. I think that this would make things much easier on the people currently judging people's signatures.

    UP

I personally never have graphics in my signature, but for those that do, trying to find the right size must be a pain in the neck if they don't know how to properly measure.

    DOWN

I think that vB4(which we'll be upgrading to soon) will have the ability to do that automatically for the users so this isn't needed imo.

This is a good point. If users do find that their sig is a violation, they can resize their images in this software. If deemed appropriate, steps on how to resize could be added.

Also, it would make a good practice for moderators who suspect that a signature is too tall as well, instead of just superimposing a 160 by 575 rectangle on the signature and trying to eye the two out.

I'm trying to find information for that but I'm not getting much luck.

Does it have a specific name?
