Venusaur can take more hits than Sceptile, and is more offensive in the special department. Also, It is more versatile so... Venusaur is my choice :B

Sceptile. It's my second favourite Grass starter and its speed is brilliant.

Sceptile, Not only is it cool but it has amazing speed. Although Venasaur would win in a fight, my vote is to sceptile.

Since Sceptile has no strong super effective attacks against Venasaur, Venasaur would win in a fight. It could use Sludge Bomb to destroy Sceptile.

I like Sceptile better, though. Like Envoy said, it is the only bipedal grass starter, which makes it different. I also like more fast and offense based Pokemon, so I vote for Sceptile.

Sceptile. Hands down. I prefer sceptile because its fast, cool design and useful in battle. Well, actually, I do like venusaur, but what made sceptile win is the design.. Well, that's all

Venusaur please. He might be one of two Grass Starters I don't prefer over the Water or Fire partners, but he is my second favorite Kanto Starter, at least middle grounds in my Grass Pokémon preference, and was actually my very first Starter and Pokémon of the whole series (I picked Bulbasaur in my first Blue playthrough, though that was mostly following the manual's tips, ehehe).

Sceptile, on the other hand, is my least favorite Hoenn Starter, and easily one of my least favorite Grass Pokémon, or even Pokémon in general, barely standing above critters I dislike more, like Scyther. I don't care how "good" he is. His design is a letdown after Grovyle's and even Treecko's, and his in-game performance is horrible. Easily the worst of every Starter ever.

So yeah. Venusaur by a long shot.

I definitely vote for Sceptile. Did any other starter get a signature move? Plus, Sceptile has good attack and speed stats.

Yes. Venusaur. He got Frenzy Plant.

It wasn't until later games that all the other Starters got it too (notably a special Chikorita in XD). By the time that Frenzy Plant was given to all the other Starters (Gen IV), Leaf Blade was no longer Sceptile's signature move as other Pokemon (Bellossom, Farfetch'd, Gallade) could learn it.

Sceptile , Venusaur looked ugly to me.

Plus Sceptile had his own signature move in debut Generation.

Venusaur. Because just looking cooler and having a better speed can't be compared with Venusaur's versatility. And picking Treecko as a starter gives you a hard time in the beginning until you get a decent grass type attack, leaf blade.

Sceptile gets my vote. It has no need for the Sun to be useful, and its movepool is overall better than Venusaur's. Plus Flying Gem + Acrobatics = goodbye Venusaur. I just know I'll be bashed for this.
