Thread: Hoenn Mid-evos Starters Clash: Marshtomp vs Combusken vs Grovyle

I'm not sure if a similar thread has already been made before, but I don't recall seeing one and I hope I'm not making a mistake here. So :

VSVS

Grovyle and Marshtomp are kind of opposites : the first has low HP and high Speed, while the second benefits from much more HP but is cleanly slower. As for the other stats the difference is less striking. And Combusken is somewhere in between the two others and has somewhat more well-balanced stats.
Grovyle keeps its monotype while Combusken gets access to the Fighting type (and God knows how awfully useful it is) and Marshtomp acquires the Ground type (later it becomes a powerful Earthquake user).
In terms of design and originality the three are all pretty cool : Grovyle's line is the first non-quadruped Grass starter, Combusken's line is inspired by a real-life sport close to the concept of Pokemon, Marshtomp's line has a not-so-obvious origin and mudkipz are lulz.

So which one do you prefer ? Who's got the best design ? Who's the most powerful ?


As for me, I chose Combusken because I always had a kind of fidelity towards Fire starters. Plus it felt so fresh and different when compared to previous generations fire starters, I mean Combusken doesn't even have fire somewhere on its body but it still manages to be cool.

I have different favourite for all three parts.

BABY: Mudkip
MIDDLE: Grovyle
FINISH: Blaziken.

Grovyle is more useful for the time in game it is 2nd Forme.

I love all three of these guys, but Combusken wins this one. Not just for being my favourite out of these three, but for being my favourite pokemon out of all of them.
I could gush on about how freaking adorable it is. Or how, despite that, it still looks like a capable battler with those claws and talons. Or how they were able to take the concept of a largely negative 'sport' irl and turn it into an acceptable basis for a monster design. Or that it was the very first form of a starter pokemon to have a totally unique type combination. Or that, hey, chickens; they're awesome birds in general. Or that it made for some seriously badass anime battles. But that'd be rambling.

I would say Grovyle. I like Blaziken more than Sceptile but Grovyle looks cooler than Combusken.

Marshtomp or Combusken. I voted for Marshtomp though, as I started out with a Mudkip during the first time I played Ruby.

I just can't decide. They are all equals to my opinion. I've used them all, and all of them are useful. They all look good. I'm sorry but I really can't decide. lol

Baby forms: Mudkip > Treecko = Torchic
Mid forms: Grovyle > Combusken > Marshtomp
Final Forms: Blaziken > Swampert > Sceptile


Thus, Grovyle, based on both his design and battle usefulness.

Marhtomp by default, because it evolves into Swampert.

Though I kinda also like its design the most out of all three.

Grovyle . I like Marshtomp , but I don't like Combusken

Grovyle because it looks cool.

I like Grovyle because he can learn many offensive attack moves, plus the design s awesome. And I also thought he was a great partner for me while human in PMD Explorers of TIme/Darkness/Sky

Marshtomp, because I claimed it.

Grovyle is the better mid-evo, but Sceptile is ugly as hell, so my favourite final-evo is the imponent Swampert. (Funny fact that since Gen III, my favourite starter is always the water type)

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE BLAZIKEN!!! But I Liek Mudkipz. My vote goes to Marshtomp, for its better design.

I used to love Marshtomp a lot but as not much as anymore; and I think Grovyle is very overrated(though I can understand why, he is essentially a young badass samurai gecko); so my decision goes to Combusken, because he is cool, cute and most importantly, a giant cockfighting chicken.

As for which one is better in battle(especially in Gen V with all Dream World abilities), I have no clue, so I am not going to make an assumption about that.
