Thread: Flying-type Gym Leaders Showdown: Falkner vs. Winona vs. Skyla

Falkner... keeps talking about how great his father is, and how he could beat Koga in a fight, and that he wants to be as awesome as his father, and do you know his father? Because he says all these awesome things about him.

... but he never appears. There's nothing known about him other than being better than Falkner. >_>

And in a game design standpoint... he uses an evolved pokémon very early, sure, but seriously? He doesn't even use a Hoothoot or anything particularly interesting. His design is good, but... he incredibly lacks in character.


Winona and Skyla though aren't really memorable. Noticeably Skyla, who is in a generation where gym leaders all do relevant things in the story.


So I'm just going to say Winona out of she having the more interesting team. She might be obscure, but she uses a quite unique team that is very appropiate for that stage of the game.

Skyla is hot. so her.

Who would win? Probably Winona. She had the best team in the games.

Who do you like more/prefer? Skyla.... She's hot! LOL

But, I actually like them all (but not in the same way I like Skyla....). They are all good gym leaders IMO.

1. Winona, she has an Altaria and a Skarmory after all.

2. Skyla for being yet another of the main series's tradition of having a female gym leader w/ a midriff.

3. Falkner for his neat design (he looks like an emo birdman).

Winona. Tougher Pokémon.

Falkner. Winona has no personality and Skyla is an object.

Falkner has my vote. I am a little biased to the first two gens so he is from Gen 2 so he has my vote and he was a good first leader.

Falkner as well. Johto pride. And yes, I also think he's badass.

They're all rather boring characters, but whilst Winona's personality is the blandest of any major character, she has by far the best team of the three, and is the most fun to battle. She gets my vote.

1. Falkner. Go Johto.

2. Skyla. Go airplanes.

3. Winona. Go...uh, Winona.

Skyla is at a disadvantage there because she has no rematch team, but if we go by the difficult they presented to me when I first fought them, then I'll have to go with Winona. Her Skarmory was a demon, Altaria didn't lag behind and her remaining Pokémon were on par with the difficulty of what the others have to offer, so Winona gets the winning edge here.

Who do you prefer?

I'll consider design/personality for this one. I honestly don't remember Winona's personality, which is a bad sign. Skyla and Falkner are tied otherwise. As for design, Winona is easily one of my favourite female Gym Leaders in this department and I also love Falkner's. I really don't like Skyla's design as opposed to a good chunk of the male population... So, Falkner gets my preference vote.

Which do you like more?

Winona and Falkner are tied in my mind, but since I can only vote for one I'll go with the one who gave me the most interesting battle: Winona.

I choose Falkner because Skyla has a phallus on her head, and Winona suffers from the "boring character" plague many leaders in Hoenn seemed to have caught. Though, I think Winona would win in a battle simply because she had better options for flying types based on the first team.

Winona's strongest beats Falkner's by four levels and her weakest is at a higher level than four of Falkner's, and unlike Falkner, doesn't restrict herself to birds only, but uses flying Pokemon. She has both Dragonite (only one level weaker than Falkner's strongest) and Skarmory (two levels stronger) on her team, as well as more variety in type. She easily trumps Falkner.

Oops... I didn't know that Emerald allowed you to rematch gym leaders, so I didn't know she even had a rematch team.
