In this thread, we're comparing Azumarill (マリルリ Mariruri), the Aqua Rabbit Pokémon, and Medicham (チャーレム Chāremu), the Meditate Pokémon.
By appearance alone, these two Pokémon are very different, and it seems unfit to pit them against each other in a type of thread that matches Pokes of similarity. But they have something in common; an ability that raises their otherwise subpar Attack stats to frightening levels.
Azumarill's Huge Power-enforced Attack goes great with its other, usable stats: its great HP and good defenses (100/80/80), allowing it to be a strong tank. By itself, its Attack is just like its Sp. Attack; at a base value of 50, far below par and virtually unusable. But Huge Power raises it to a maximum of 436 at Lv.100, which is very hard-hitting, especially with its famous Choice Band raising it to 654. Azumarill boasts the strongest unaltered Waterfall in the game, and it does the same with Aqua Jet. Aqua Jet is perhaps Azumarill's greatest weapon, as it allows the Aqua Rabbit to ignore its own subpar Speed and hit hard before the foe can react. Its Water STAB combos well with Return, having near-perfect neutral coverage. It also has Ice Punch for Dragon-types, Grass-types, and Gliscor, and Superpower allows it to trump the common Blissey, as well as most Steel-types. Its bulk and ability to set Substitutes with 101 HP (just barely out of one-hit range from Seismic Toss) both allow it to be a strong user of the Substitute + Focus Punch strategy. Since its niche is all about the immediate strength of Huge Power, its other two otherwise useful Abilities, Thick Fat and Herbivore (the latter coming from the Dream World), are often overshadowed.
Medicham is a bit of a different case. It's not built to be a tank like Azumarill, but rather a deadly (though frail) sweeper. Its max Attack is slightly higher than that of Azumarill's, being at 480 with Pure Power. It also has more powerful and varied attack moves at its disposal, such as the powerful Hi Jump Kick, the Elemental Punches, and the game's strongest Reversal. Unfortunately, its only priority attack is Bullet Punch, which isn't boosted by STAB. Its defensive layout is somewhat lacking (60/75/75), but its Speed, though at an average base value of 80, is usable for sweeps. One of Medicham's most famous sets is Endure + Salac + Reversal, with the Salac Berry raising its Speed to proper sweep levels so this Poke can crush teams with its ridiculously powerful Reversal. It also employs the Choice Band to launch destructive Hi Jump Kicks and smash walls, or the Choice Scarf to pick off potentially dangerous foes.
Which one looks better?
Which would win in a battle?
Which is generally cooler?
In my case, I say Azumarill. It looks better to me, and it can crush Medicham with Aqua Jet backed by Choice Band before being forced to eat a ThunderPunch.
