Red has backstory; I prefer his backstory to Ash's, actually. Red was a "curious" boy who became interested in Pokemon training after his best friend and neighbor, Blue, stopped playing with him and became a bully. Ash became rivals with Gary after they fought over a Pokeball they'd caught fishing (which is a retcon, considering they act as though they've never met in EP001).
And I think it's unfair to criticize Red for a lack of personality, because he's meant to be an avatar through which you can insert your personality. Silent protagonists are used so the player can immerse themselves more completely in the game. Since this proved so successful, I'd say that relative to his medium (video games vs tv), Red's "strong & silent" personality is superior to Ash's.
Red.
Ash was a crap character from a shitty cartoon which only rapes pokemon game canon and panders to what they assume are retarded elementary school kids.
I'm honestly shocked that pokemon game fans can watch the anime and not hate it for doing that, not to mention don't lose their brain cells from it... unless you're like... 10.

As much as I love Ash, I gotta go with Red on this one. Red never got boring to me like Ash did and Red is epic. Very epic.

Red FTW. Ash has stayed 10 for how many years? At least Red gets older, NO ONE in the anime has aged a day. Ash isn't even in the games, and Red single handedly disbanded Team Rocket, became pokemon master, became the league champion, and has a better design in my opinion.

PokeSpe Red is not only incredibly talented, but he actually became a developed character and doesn't lose all his power and become an idiot at the beginning of each series like Ash, who sort of stopped his development halfway through and is now just a placeholder. Red in Pocket Monsters (the weird manga) is delightfully hideous and actually flashes people at one point in the first volume, plus he abuses his Pokemon, so he is pretty much so ridiculous he's amazing. And Red in the games is a badass who doesn't even talk, just uses his crazy-powerful team to pummel you into the ground. He also lives at the top of a deadly mountain away from humanity entirely and has become one with his Pokemon. So an all accounts, Red wins, hands down. Red has the right to act badass, Ash pretends he is but is too immature to actually train his Pokemon enough to back it up. After a battle with Red Ash would lie in his bed at home crying and shivering while Nurse Joy tried to heal his fatal-condition Pikachu that got its ass kicked by Red's Pikachu, who would be at the window of the center making horrifying faces at Ash's Pikachu and hitting on Nurse Joy. Heck, Ash's Pikachu would never get better, because Joy would be too busy making out with Red's sexy Pikachu to give it any attention. Red belongs on the A-Team, Ash is a 10 year old cosplaying Red to look cool. End of story.
Red. He is awesome. Ash on the other hand, is annoying in every single way.
