@Misheard Whisper; Aikido sounds like something for you, then. It's all about inner harmony and self-development, and as a self-defense technique it focuses on being gentle to the attacker (it's based mostly on throws and locks). Depending on the style of aikido, there's no competitive element either; it's all about developing the self and learning gentle self-defense techniques.

Anyway, since I don't see a thread for it, I'll just ask here: Is there anyone who wants to betaread the first chapter of a fic I'm working on? I need no detailed feedback, only a read-through and a short comment on whether or not it's good (I'm just worrying it might be too menial)

Aikido was actually the first one I thought of. :P I'm going to a trial session on Friday to give it a look, as well as a couple of other martial arts over the next couple of weeks, just to see which one suits me best. But yes, I am currently leaning towards aikido.

@Misheard Whisper; I hope you enjoy it. I'm planning on taking it up next year - either that, or kyudo (Japanese archery). Had my run with kendo once, but the club wasn't all that motivational (too laid-back teachers and unserious atmosphere for my tastes)
@Stellar Haze; shall I email it to you?

The one I really want to learn is capoeira, but there's nowhere to learn it in my city, so I have to wait until I go away to university next year. They have weekly classes just a few blocks from the main campus. :D

All this martial arts talk reminds me when I once learned kung fu from eleven to around thirteen years old, after a suggestion from an old friend. I eventually lost interest in it, though, so I'm very rusty right now. I have considered training martial arts again for self defense, but the problem for me right now is time and money.

Anyway, right now, I'm writing an one-shot fic, which I hope I can post within an hour (although it's getting late here, but I'm crossing fingers). It's actually somewhat personal to me and my family, I guess that's why I decided to write it.

EDIT: I was actually gonna sugest capoeira, @Misheard Whisper;, since I find it to be an interesting martial arts, which was originally disguised as a dance by slaves in Brazil(?)

Many thanks to Blue Dragon for the signature
