As he fell, he felt another presence zooming by. Suddenly, he had landed on something's back. Was it Reshiram again, trying to save his life and prolong his misery out of what it perceived to be trust?
No; nothing so mundane. He reached around and felt a very synthetic hide, his eyes tearing up from the wind as people in the streets below looked in awe at Zekrom, who had saved the dear child Nicholas.
Suddenly, he felt another force jerk at him as Zekrom slowed down, landing on the ground.
"N!" cried a voice. To hear that name again, that false name that he now despised so much...
"Are you alright? Man, I brought out Zekrom just in the nick of time. One more second and you would have been toast!" It was that trainer again. The one who had fought him with Reshiram and defeated him. What was his name? Was it Blake? Kyle? No, it was Hilbert.
"What were you doing up there?" asked Hilbert. N had never said anything to Hilbert about such things. But From the look in his eyes, Hilbert knew. "Don't believe a word of what your dad says," said Hilbert. "You're not a freak. You're not the messed-up idiot that Ghetsis tells you that you are. He's the messed-up idiot."
Nicholas looked down at his shoes. He was the "messed-up idiot", not his father. His entire life, he had never grown up with anything but Pokémon. He did not know what people talked like. He had been conditioned by Team Plasma to believe that Pokémon were abused by humans.
Nicholas' internal monologue was interrupted by another comment from Hilbert. "Have you ever been out in the wild with Pokémon?"
Nicholas never looked up. But his thoughts had been disturbed yet again. He had never been out in the wild. Every experience of his had been carefully crafted by his father to shield him from the world. It was only his ignorance that had allowed him to have courage and fight for what he believed in. But was that real courage?
Hilbert prodded him again. "Hey, you're zoning out."
Nicholas finally looked back up at Hilbert. "Hey, what do you say you come with me?" said Hilbert with a smile. "I could use a training partner who isn't Bianca or Cheren. What do you say, N?"
He thought about it. This child was what he had lost to. Perhaps there was much that he could learn from him. Maybe by training with him, he could have some real experiences. Have some real courage. Maybe he could even stand up to his father.
Nicholas realized that his head was pointing down again. He looked up and took the hand that Hilbert was holding out. "Call me Nicholas," he said.
