Justin was nodding off, school had never been one of his strong points and the teacher, Mr.Dustoff, had a certain flair for putting people to sleep during class. It sometimes amazed Justin how Mr. Dustoff failed to notice the sheer lack of attention from anyone in class. The only thing that kept him awake was worry; worry that maybe, just maybe his little secret might be uncovered, a barking, troublemaking, fire-breathing little secret.
Justin's bag began to shake, a muffled bark could be heard from inside. Suddenly, Mr.Dustoff stopped, he glanced around the room as if he heard something. When he realized that no one was awake to make a sound, he shrugged and went back to explaining the history lesson. Justin gulped warily, he felt like his nerves were going to fry at any minute.
He bent over, making it look like he wanted to get something out of his bag. He zipped the back open carefully and peered inside at Mika, his vulpix. She gave Justin a reproachful look as she struggled to look up at him through the bag’s small opening. Justin, however, only glared back. After all, Mika was the one who had snuck into his bag before leaving, saddling him with his own little ball of fun. It wasn’t until he had gotten on the bus, opened his bag to pull out a sandwich that he realized that he had a hitchhiker.
Justin had managed to keep her quiet by slipping her some of his lunch every now and then, but that didn’t stop her from getting rowdy when she was beginning to feel bored. Soon enough, though, the day would end, and then he could run back home and put Mika where she belonged, home.
Suddenly, the school bell rang and all the snoring students snapped wide awake as if they were trained to respond to the sound. At the same time, the vice principal’s head darted into the classroom and loudly announced that every student should head to the auditorium for a presentation.
Upon hearing the announcement, the class burst into a bustle of activity, the students talking excitedly about the topic of the presentation. Justin, however, remained firmly fixed to his seat, a look of pure horror on his face.
Under normal circumstances, he would have been thrilled, Mr.Dustoff’s history lesson had been cut short, he would be able to chill out in the auditorium and catch some Z’s. Who cared about some stupid presentation?
But now, it meant he would have to deal with Mika, who was still in his bag, in a huge room filled with people. Justin could almost hear the tirade his mother would put him through if Mika was found out, he let out an involuntary squeak at the thought of it.
Within minutes, the classroom had assembled and was heading towards the auditorium. Justin had his backpack strapped to his back as he shuffled in front, hoping to find an isolated spot away from any people.
The moment he entered the room, Justin scurried into a corner and sat down, putting the bag with Mika inside, on his lap. The bag shook again as Mika attempted to get out and see her surroundings, but Justin simply hugged the bag close to him and told her to be quiet.
People were filing into the room and soon enough, the auditorium was full of nervous, excited middle school students. Justin found himself sitting next to an attractive young girl from his class named Natalie and few other kids he didn’t know.
The presenter got onto the podium, and introduced the guest, who was, to much surprise, none other than Brock Harrison. Although he was too busy wrestling Mika inside the bag, Justin did notice a lot of the students sit forward earnestly awaiting the gym leader to come on stage; probably hoping to get some useful battle lesson or learn a new strategy.
Ironically it would be neither, as Brock opted to tell them some story. The moment Brock grabbed his guitar and begun strumming it, Justin saw a number of students slump back in their seats with disappointed looks, others were laughing silently and rest were listening with a detached sort of interest.
Upon hearing the guitar’s melody and Brock telling his story, Mika stopped squirming in the back and lay still, she then slowly poked her head out of the backpack, staring at Brock with an intense interest. Mika’s pricked, she watched Brock’s movements intently and her eyes focused entirely on the show.
Justin couldn’t help but stare at Mika’s reaction, it seemed like she actually enjoyed it. He glanced around him, satisfied that no one was paying attention to Mika; most of them were paying too much attention to the story. He was beginning to feel uncomfortable, so he tried to adjust his seat, but Mika growled softly as he shifted, her eyes still trained on Brock.
A warning.
Justin paused, was she telling him to stop? He looked to his left and noticed that the attractive girl wasn’t paying much attention, so he tried to talk to her. But no sooner than he said “hi” that he felt a sharp bite to his ear. He whirled and faced Mika, who was giving him one of her trademark glares.
A shiver ran down Justin’s spine.
He shook it off and tried to remain focused. Having told Justin to shut up, Mika returned her attention to the story. Justin sighed as he contemplated his options. Seeing as he was stuck here, he could try to find something to do. He made a soft bored sound with his mouth.
Unfortunately, it was loud enough for Mika to hear.
Justin yelped and put a hand to his ear, noting the blood that was coming out.
Mika was still watching the show, enthralled by Brock’s tale.
