    Default The Importance of Grammar?

    Hello everyone.

I have had this discussion on and off with people for a while, so I thought I would get a wider spectrum of views on this question:

Do you think grammar is the most important thing in a story?

I must say No to this. Many of my friends have said that good grammar allows them to enoy the story more, but I disagree. I have read many stories here, on FF.net and even books that have perfect grammar, but the stories themselves are just plain awful: no flow, bad plots, same old archtypes.

So what do you guys think: should grammar be more important than a good plot or characters?

It's important, as if you can't read it you can't enoy it, but as long as you can understand the grammar, you hould be working on story and flow.

I think everyone does have a basic understanding of grammar. I don't think grammar hinders the story, unless you have:

ash went to the pkemoin centre with his Pikachu. he saids to nurse joy can youse heal my pokemon please? and nurse joy said yes.

I can understand if it's that awful, of course :P But if there are typos, I think that should be easy enough to avoid.

That's what I meant - If you can read it, you don't need to work on your grammar if your plot is lacking. Obviously, better grammar makes reading it more enjoyable, but story is more important. But I've seen fics that read worse than your example, so that's why I said it's important.

Grammar isn't the most important part of a story. Not by far.

But it is important. It should be focused on like any other aspect of a story, in my mind.

This. A story could outperform any of the world's greatest writers, but if its grammar is pathetic, it's not worth reading (assuming the grammar isn't so bad that it renders the story totally illegible anyway).
Yeah, I write weirdly dark stuff sometimes. Birdsong, I Can't See The Light and The Courteous Soldier, if you're interested.

So, what if a story had an awful plot, awful characters, awful flow but excellent grammar: would you still read it?

Nope. But if it had a great plot, great characters, and great flow but awful grammar... well, it depends on how great the "greats" are. Sometimes I read something with bad grammar, but everything else is good, and it just pulls me back out of the story because I basically try to rewrite everything I read (ever) in my head.

Grammar is kind of one of those "negative contributors". If it's not there, the story is horrible, but if it is there, it doesn't make the story any better.
The word "quadragonal" is the only word with "dragon" in it where "dragon" is not a root word. That makes it awesome.

I feel that grammar is part of the writer's voice; but that's just me.

Of course, moderate grammar is essential. We DO need to be able to read it =P

You're missing the point. So what if the story had good characterization, a great plot and is paced really well, people wouldn't read it if the grammar is terrible. You're acting like its the only factor for a story, but for a good story, it can be the difference on whether anyone actually gives it the time of day.

The only time I'd take it seriously is if it was written in first person.

To be completely honest, I tend to shy away from stories with horrible grammar. It's one of the first things I look for in a story, because I find it to be a good example of how much effort the author put into it. If a story has decent grammar, maybe not perfect, but decent, then I read the first chapter. From there, I only continue if I like the plot, characters, prose, etc. If it doesn't have those things, I'll still drop it as fast as I would a story with poor grammar.

I agree with much that has been said.

Good grammar is vital because to most readers, bad grammar will absolutely detract from the story itself.

Obviously, the quality of the characters and plot is of great importance as well, but yeah, grammar is the backbone.

    Perfect Grammar + Bad plot/characters/style = Bad.
Interesting plot/characters/style + Worst Grammar imaginable = Bad.

It is just as important as the other elements. I wouldn't read a book that makes it hard for me to understand what is going on even if it has the best plot to have ever been written by a human.
