Thread: My first proper sprites

I used to make sprites that, now, I'm ashamed of (as they were, to be blunt, awful) and have since deleted them from my hard drive...FOREVER. But that's not the point. I've made some random sprites for want of something better to do, and some constructive (OH GOD PLEASE JUST CONSTRUCTIVE-- NO HATING) criticism would be nice.


Front and back sprites of a Bulbasaur, recoloured using just the three colours of the flower on Venusaur's back (brown, yellow and pink).


A pokeball with Eevee features.


Two palette swaps: Plusle with Minun, and Aria Meloetta with Pirouette Meloetta.


A sort-of Meowth/Eevee splicey-thing. Not sure what to call it. Definitely not my best, though.


I'm not even going to pretend to call this 'Pikablu'. It's just a corrected palette inversion (not counting the eyes).


Kind-of average splice practice; Mudkip with Treecko and with Torchic (plus Cyndaquil).


Two of my RP characters; Theodore the Meganium and Chase the Chikorita, both with palettes for comparison to the original.


A random recolour of a Snivy. Does this count as a sprite? I'm not sure...


My favourite one, a fire-retyped Feraligatr. Not sure why I like it, though.

Basculin palette swap.


Delibird palette inversion.


Inspired by the Pikachu-coloured Pichu, this is the Snivy-coloured Serperior. One problem with it is the difference in number of colours between the two palettes, so the lighter green area is actually Serperior's palette from what is now the richer green area.

Recolour of the Striaton Brothers in all their forms. This took an epically long time to do.

An Espeon/Umbreon palette swap. A far cry from my best work, I think.

Two more RP characters- Ciôn and Sin, from SonsOfAdmirals' Becoming a Pokemon.

Good job with these sprites! For your first, these are really, really good! The only things I would work on for you is the transitions between features of different Pokemon and the base Pokemon and making sure certain features don't look like they're a little too far to the right or left. For the first one, put simply, try to make sure that people can't even tell where one Pokemon's features end and the other's begin. (for instance, the fire on Feraligator's tail does not look natural, while the fire from Mudkip/Torchic's tail does.) For the second bit of advice, look at the fire on Feraligator's head and the spike things on Mudkip/Torchic's head. They are a tad off center, and it's a bit distracting. When you're positioning a feature like that, try a few different positions to see which one looks most natural. If none look natural, put them in the best position and edit the feature a little.

Honestly, these are just minor details. All in all, I'd say you're off to a really good start! :D

Paragon did a good job saying what you need to work on, the only thing im going to add is that some of the sprites are lacking outlines were needed. If you dont understand... then look at the meowth/eevee. the right side of its head has outlines when the left.. doesn't.


For your first "real" sprites they are quite well done.

I like the melloeta palette swap.

I can see what you mean about the off-center stuff, and to be honest, I agree. I'll try to pay more attention to that in future.

This post is only half a bump. It's also because there's a limit to the number of images I can stick on the OP.


A recolour of every Gym Leader and Elite Four member (plus Alder) using Lenora's palette. NOTE: THIS IS NOT DISCRIMINATION. I used Lenora's palette because she has one of the three most prominent skin tones (the other two belonging to Iris and Marshal). I wanted to test how it would look on the others.


My first attempts at a trainer sprite. Jasper, the water-type pokemon dance co-ordinator from an RP that died.


Ravi, from the Rainbow Islands RPs. This is a tiny edit; three of the sprites are missing a finger. That's the only change.


Dark Alex from the Becoming a Pokemon RPs (same as Ciôn and Sin from the above post).

I'd like it to be a good size, because I want to use it as an avatar. Maybe the same size as yours, or the same size as the one I'm using now; whichever would look better. Moreover, make it in that inverted style.

Is that what you meant?

Ah, I don't think I can properly invert Sugimori/pixel art, just sprites. If I do an inverted Dragonite sprite (with and/or without the art as a background), will that do?

Yeah, that's fine. Just work your magic, and I'll be pleased. :)

Okay, I'm afraid I can't work with the Sugimori art (too big compared to the sprite) but here's the inversion. Better than nothing, right?

A palette swap of Tepig and Oshawott. I'm not too pleased with how Tepig turned out, but Oshawott looks okay.


A not-so-bad palette swap of Zekrom and Reshiram. The tip of Zekrom's head (that's usually blue) was recoloured with the red aura from a later frame of Reshiram's animation.


Meloetta pokeballs! I'm quite pleased with these, actually. And I'll add to this picture if Meloetta gets a new form(s) in the third version.
