Pokemon Missions Discussion
A little known feature of the URPG National Park is something called Pokemon Missions.
Pokemon Missions is a lot like tabletop roleplaying for the URPG. One or two "Dungeon Masters" guides a team of Pokemon trainers as they explore the world around them. In their journey, they might save the day, find great fortune, or win eternal fame and renown. Each mission is different and there is always unknown danger lurking around every corner.
The Mission
Your Mission, if you choose to accept it, is to overcome the various challenges presented to during the adventure. Should you succeed, life, as we know it, will be better off and the world will be safe once again. Should you fail, well, let's not talk about that.
The Missions can best be compared to a Dungeons and Dragons game. In both, a party of trainers (role players) creatively attempt to combat and defeat various encounters, slowly working their way through the adventure in order to finish their mission.
This party will encounter hazards that can vary from a hostile criminal to a wild stampede to an exploding volcano. In order to overcome these hazards, the party needs cooperation, creativity, and determination. There are many solutions to a problem, but some are better than others.
The Plan
What we want to do is move this idea beyond the Park and spin it into its own aspect of the URPG. Now that the URPG has something akin to its own RP section, this idea can take an even greater role than before.
So here's how this is going to play out.
We need to come up with a better system to implement this idea, one a little different than the Park. For one thing, capturing Pokemon does not take place during a Mission. Rather, you'll likely find treasure that includes items and money. You'll earn a name for yourself among the people and perhaps even save the day. In some sense, the rewards are real in terms of URPG value, and in others, the adventure is its own reward.
As the URPG tends to do with everything, we take something that's already fun (battling, stories, etc) and make it better by offering something more.
I brought onto the team AIE and Trilobyte who both have excellent ideas on what they want to do with this. I won't post what they've discussed. After all, they probably want to explain their own ideas!
Additionally, we probably have a few more URPG leaders pitching in such as DarkGardevoir and surely Dog of Hellsing.
The point is, though, that this is a community effort. We want to make this idea work in a way to bring increased life to URPG RPing. That's what this thread is for, to discuss new ideas and make suggestions. So if you have something you want to say or a suggestion to make, please post it. We're all friends here and we want to make this a better place.
So let's get to it!
Re: Pokemon Missions: Advanced!
This sounds like it'd be a lot of fun. It also sounds like it'd be very involved, and depend heavily on active participation from all parties; it may be something that we want to run several simultaneously so they can stay fairly small, or have something akin to either a lottery or waiting list for one. Either way, we'd probably want to make them episodic so that new people can experience it.
Re: Pokemon Missions: Advanced!
Shoot, I think it's a great idea. I'll go ahead and get in line with my beloved Beedrill Shou. As for ideas, how about we start with a simple concept, like "who stole all the chocolate chips from the cookie factory"?
On an unrelated note, when do you think this might be starting up? Soon? Before or after the park re-opens? Also, will we be able to catch pokémon like in a normal trip to the park? (I somehow doubt that last one, but it doesn't hurt to ask)
Re: Pokemon Missions: Advanced!
To answer Hyoma's questions, the regular National Park exists for capturing pokemon. The mission system will be, in these situations, much too dangerous for capturing pokemon, as your character may be thrown into life-threatening situations. If you were investigating a strange cave system appearing suddenly linked to missing trainers and their pokemon and suddenly a rampaging Tyranitar makes a Hyper-Beaming beeline for you, your main reaction won't be 'Oh wow, a Tyranitar! That'll make an excellent catch,' it'll be 'Oh crap, Hyper Beam' and you'll likely either have to make a sudden dodge or be vaporised.
As for the date of release, it'd be best for the park to be revamped firstly, with this in development according to park development.
Oh, and there's also the important thing that the better an RPer you are, the higher the chance you'll receive a nice reward at the end of it all.
Re: Pokemon Missions: Advanced!
This sounds awesome! If there was to be a new battle system, I think it would be good if it was one similar to the park, but with hazards worked in. For example, if a tree branch falls on a Pokemon, they lose some HP depending on the quality of the RP, the reaction of the trainer, and the size of the Pokemon. Hazards could also be given a type. A pit of lava could be fire type, and a mudslide could be ground and/or water type.
Also, will there be an HP system for the trainers as well as their Pokemon?
Re: Pokemon Missions: Advanced!
I've been working on a base draft concerning statuses that may be implemented into the mission system, pretty much based off the Mystery Dungeon series range of statuses.
In a nutshell, there's 2 families of status and 3 degrees of severity. There are Bubonic statuses that are concerned with reducing HP and other stats, such as Poison, and there are Crippling statuses that deal with hindering ability, such as Paralysis or Freezing.
In terms of severity, there's Minor, Major and Endangering, with Minor statuses being small but irritating, Major being those with much greater threat that would require seeing to with haste, while Endangering level statuses will likely be extremely dangerous, if not fatal, if left alone.
The status draft will be up sometime tomorrow for you folks to have an examination of. As for the trainer's health? That may very well be implemented as well.
Re: Pokemon Missions: Advanced!
Additionally, I want to make the rewards at the end of the Mission proportional to the role playing quality of the team of trainers. If they were generally creative, posted long replies, and wrote with quality, then they should expect a decent reward. In other words, the more effort you put in, the greater the treasure.

Pretty much what I said :P
Anyways, it'd be best for us all to consider each seperate segment, starting with the battle mechanics. As stated before, I'll be posting the status list draft tomorrow, through which we can then discuss which ones to use, which to delete, and others that could be used as well.
Re: Pokemon Missions: Advanced!
Can Pe2kers join this? I'd like to try this out. These don't work too well on the other forum, maybe it'll be better here.
Re: Pokemon Missions: Advanced!
I'd imagine this would count for both branches.
Note to Harry: pe2k needs Ultra Worlds forum.
Re: Pokemon Missions: Advanced!
Wow, this sounds great. I'd love to be involved.
Re: Pokemon Missions: Advanced!
This sounds like fun, can't wait for it to be available.
