Skarmory didn’t seem to notice us as we came down the twisting stairs to the platform it was on, but it was still cawing shrilly. The sound, now that we were right on top of it, was more grating than it had been before, and I couldn’t help but wince as the sharp noise stabbed at my ears. Ripper looked a bit irritated by the racket, but he stuck close to me in that overprotective way he had about him. I patted his back to get him to relax a little; I wanted him on guard but not as tensed as he was. He glanced at me but said nothing, turning his attention back to Skarmory.

As we descended I took in the scene of destruction laid out around my target. There was a set of deep scores in the stone platform, starting in the middle and trailing all the way to the edge of the heavy stone slab. I was amazed that something could have caused such damage in one go and wondered if the Skarmory here was the one responsible. There were also chunks of stone strewn about haphazardly, and more slices were carved out of the platform and stone pillars. Something major had gone down here, a huge battle of some kind. I could only wonder what had happened and where the others that had been responsible for the damage here were. Of course there was always the possibility that this Skarmory had done it all on its own for some reason; they were certainly capable of wreaking this kind of havoc if the mood struck them.

As we reached the platform and stepped off the stairs, I got a better look at the Skarmory that was shrieking at seemingly nothing. Even though we were still a fair distance away I could see it was slight in stature and looked paler than your average Skarmory, almost a light sort of tannish gray instead of silver. I also got glimpses of the undersides of its wings; instead of being a bright red hue, they were a sort of metallic lime-green. It appeared this particular specimen was a female, and a Shiny one on top of that. I could scarcely believe the stroke of luck that not only allowed me to encounter what was normally a rare Pokemon to begin with, but one with the ever-elusive gene that only affected roughly one out of eight-thousand Pokemon and caused them to have different coloration than normal.

I wanted to catch this Pokemon for certain, but the way she was acting had me cautious and loathe to just leap willy-nilly into battle. If anything I’d need to be more careful during this battle than any other so far, because it would be a shame to knock this beautiful creature out or risk her fleeing. I decided that for now, playing safe would be the best bet until I could figure out how Skarmory would react to the situation.

“Ripper, we’re gonna go ahead and get this girl in a battle,” I said softly to my Scizor. He simply nodded in acknowledgement, giving no further response. “I’m not sure why she’s so riled up, but a Pokemon that’s that irritated is bound to have the energy to use some strong attacks. Start with an Iron Defense, then use Agility. That way you’ll be able to dodge her attacks easier and even if she does hit you, you’ll be able to take it no problem. After that, go in for a surprise Brick Break and see if you can stun her for a few minutes.”

Ripper bowed his head once to show he understand his commands, then inhaled deeply and closed his eyes. By concentrating on each muscle group in his body, Ripper was able to tighten them and make bounce back the momentum of a foe’s physical attacks, making them do less damage. On top of his iron exoskeleton, the added Defense would make any of Skarmory’s physical moves much less effective. I wasn’t worried about any Special attacks this Skarm might know; they’re ability to use Special moves wasn’t anything too impressive, and unless it had the luck of somehow having a Fire-typed Hidden Power, none of the Special moves it knew would be super-effective against Ripper. This meant he’d most likely be able to easily shrug off pretty much any Special move Skarm threw at him, since at best they’d only do neutral damage.

After tightening the muscles in his lean body, Ripper did the exact opposite with a very specific group of muscles. Those in his chest, certain ones in his back and shoulders, and the ones in his wings were relaxed greatly, allowing his wings to move at much faster speed than normal. With this boost in wing capability, Ripper would be able to move at twice his normal speed, which was pretty fast to begin with considering he was covered in hard iron armor. His clear wings becoming nothing but a whirring blur, Ripper released the focusing breath he’d taken and opened his eyes. There was a sort of gleam in those feral yellow orbs, one that spoke of a sort of restrained excitement. It had been a long time since Ripper had been able to show his stuff in battle, and despite his Serious nature I could see he was eager to have a chance to stretch his limbs and knock the rust off his skills.

And the next thing I knew, Ripper was gone, using his incredible speed to tear off towards Skarm. I caught a brief glimpse of him as he sped to where the iron-armored bird was screeching herself silly, and in that moment I saw him approaching her from behind, one arm cocked back and his pincher gaping open. That would create two points of impact instead of one, giving him a better chance of hitting a weak spot in Skarm’s protective hide and deal extra damage, as well as possibly stunning her for a moment and giving Ripper a chance to further prepare for battle without worrying about being attacked himself.

OOC: Obviously you can say either or both Agility or ID failed; I just described them as they were happening because I’m tired of explaining how they’ll look when used in the future lol.

    BP#6 (Vs. Skarmory Post 1)

It took a while for me to notice; the Skarmory wasn't of normal coloring. It wasn't something I ever expected to find, though they seemed much more common recently than it used to be. It hardly had any bearing on the battle; there wasn't much to camouflage with with it's different coloring or with the one we were used too, and the gene associated with so-called "Shininess" didn't seem to be paired with any personality traits at all, much less something that would significantly affect its fighting style like aggressiveness.

This Skarmory, however, seemed to be very steamed about something, possibly a prior battle from the look of things. It didn't seem to be wounded, but there was more than enough damage to give the idea that it just finished fighting. Not only that, if it had just finished fighting, it was still in top form. It either got an incredibly easy win, or it was powerful, and whatever it battled earlier most likely irritated it.

I suddenly saw the battle going on; it seemed that I let myself get distracted by the Skarmory itself. Scizor rushed itself at the Skarmory, slamming one of its claws into the bird with the popular Brick Break move. It hit hard, but it didn't seem that Skarmory was stunned; it let out a powerful flap that knocked Scizor back to his starting point. There was something certain; Skarmory wasn't just going to sit by and let its opponent win the fight.

I smiled a little at Skarm’s impressive show of resilience. There weren’t many Pokemon, even one whose defensive capabilities were so high, that could take a point-blank Brick Break from a Scizor to the back of the skull and not be at all fazed. In fact, she was so tough she was able to counterattack, giving such an almighty beat of her deadly wings that Ripper was knocked back several feet. The steel-encased Bug managed to stay on his feet, and his upped Defense had prevented him from taking too much damage. Still, it was obvious this was going to be a fierce battle; from what I could see of Skarm’s personality, she was a very aggressive, persistent thing. There was probably no chance she’d retreat now, and she would most likely keep on fighting even when others would have gone down for the count. That being the case, I knew I’d have to be careful and not let her knock herself out.

“Okay Ripper, here’s the plan. Go in for a Bullet Punch and if it lands, use the rest of your momentum to try an Iron Head attack,” I called to my Pokemon, and he responded with a simple nod. He then rolled his shoulders, crouched low to the ground, and vanished from sight.

Bullet Punch was a move that temporarily allowed the user to greatly relax their muscles, letting them to move much faster than normal and usually giving them the chance to strike before the foe could realize what was happening. Thanks to his increased speed from his earlier Agility, Ripper was able to move at astounding speeds using this move. It was normally not very powerful, since the user could only maintain such high speeds for short amounts of time and the momentum behind the attack was greatly reduced before impact, but it would actually be quite effective when used by Ripper. His Ability, known as Technician, caused him to be more adept at using weaker moves, doubling their power. On top of that he would get a boost in strength thanks to Bullet Punch matching his half Steel nature. Granted, since Skarm was part Steel as well it wouldn’t be a very effective move, but it would still do a nice bit of damage.

To be honest, though, I wasn’t counting on Bullet Punch to do that much damage to begin with. What I was actually planning was for Ripper to build up an insane amount of momentum with a combined Agility and Bullet Punch, then use all that gathered speed and energy to make his Iron Head move stronger. Most Pokemon using this move tended to use their foreheads or tops of their skulls for such a move, but Ripper had a special way of executing it. Upon reaching his opponent he would lunge into the air, flipping himself upside down once airborne and ducking his head. With the acute sense of timing all insects seemed to possess, he would then snap his head back as he passed over his foe, smashing the blunt ends of his three horns into a vulnerable location on the foe’s body, usually their back or the back of their heads. He would then flip right-side up before landing again, so long as nothing interfered with his balance or the foe didn’t use some counter against him.

This particular combination of attacks was one we’d never tried in a real battle but had practiced for long hours over the past several weeks. I wasn’t sure how effective it would be, but from what our training had shown it had the potential to work well. Even if it didn’t go completely as planned, as long as Ripper managed to get his Iron Head move in there was a chance it could cause Skarm to flinch. If we got that lucky it would give us a few precious seconds to strike again, but it wasn’t something I was relying on. In such important battles, counting on random possibilities that may never happen could easily cost you.

    BP#7 (Vs. Skarmory Post 2)

Saundra seemed impressed by Skarmory's abilities; it was more than capable of holding its own in battle, and being able to immediately retaliate against a normally stunning blow appeared to prove it to her.

Scizor himself at his opponent and Skarmory did the same. Blows were exchanged at such a speed that they were invisible to our human eyes, but as quickly as it was started, Skarmory hit the ground hard, having been slammed in the back by Scizor's head-casings. Upon being downed, Skarmory let out a horrible, metallic, soul-rending shriek; it appeared to have shaken Scizor a bit.

As powerful as the battle before me was, I was amazed it wasn't doing too much damage to the tower; it seemed that whatever had gone on before greatly damaged at least the walls, yet the current battle seemed to have only displaced the rubble that was already knocked loose. I wasn't sure of the stability of the platforms we were fighting on (architecture was yet another subject I wasn't experienced in), though I was pretty certain that if the battle got too intense for too long, the platforms wouldn't last, and we would (hopefully, as the alternatives were nowhere near as good) be flying instead.

The battle was going in our favor so far, but then Skarm tried to turn the tables on us. After smashing into the floor of the platform thanks to Ripper’s Iron Head, the armor-encased aviary began to let out a hideous scream that sounded like rusty hinges squealing as they were slowly torn apart by some fierce metal beast. The sound caused my ears to ring and my head to pound a little, making a dull headache settle directly above each ear. I knew that if I were feeling so affected by the Metal Sound attack that poor Ripper would be faring far worse.

Indeed, the steel mantid looked dazed and in pain, his body drooping a little as his eyes scrunched closed and his head shook like he was trying to banish a horrific memory. His arms rose, almost like they were acting on their own accord, and his pinchers snapped aimlessly at the air. To a regular person it appeared as though Ripper was trying to catch the noise in an effort to stop it, but having spent years with him, I knew this was something he did when greatly annoyed. Yes, the sound was causing him pain, but more importantly, it was bugging the heck out of him.

“Ripper!” I hollered, needing to raise my voice to be heard over the racket Skarm was making. Ripper opened his eyes and looked over at me, his face twisted in an expression of irritated pain. His wings beat at the air erratically, another sure sign his patience was being tried. Being a Serious Pokemon, Ripper rarely let his emotions rule his decisions, but I knew that if I didn’t act soon, Ripper would take matters into his own claws. “Use a Vacuum Wave to momentarily suck the air from around Skarm so she can’t keep using her attack, then use a Bullet Punch!”

“Zor!” Ripper replied with a nod, turning to face the screeching Skarm on the ground. For a moment nothing happened other than her continuing to keen loudly, but then Ripper tore into action. He moved as a crimson streak; having hit such speeds from a dead standstill, his momentum left a powerful vacuum in his wake. It would last for a few seconds before the displaced air collapsed back in on itself; this in itself could cause a small amount of damage to any not expecting it, as they would be unprepared for their weight to be suddenly increased by the air volume returning to normal.

The main purpose of this particular attack wasn’t to do damage, though. As the air behind Ripper was displaced and the vacuum created, it would leave Skarm without any oxygen for her Metal Sound attack. She would, for a few seconds at least, be unable to breathe. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t a sadist who liked to make Pokemon suffer or anything. There was never any harm done using Vacuum Wave in this manner, since at the most the air would take maybe five seconds to return to normal. It worked wonders for leaving a foe momentarily confused and unguarded as they tried to figure out why they couldn’t seem to catch their breath. Even if they started to panic, the air would return almost at the same time, leaving them even more confused as to what had happened. Confusion was the key, here; a bemused opponent was one who wasn’t paying as much attention to the battle at hand, after all.

Bullet Punch was my plan for taking advantage of Skarm’s bewilderment should my idea with Vacuum Wave work. After passing by the downed bird, Ripper would make an abrupt but fluid one-eighty, maintaining his speed while darting back towards his foe. I didn’t know where he’d strike, but because of how fast he’d be moving he would only have a second or so to pick a target. A wing, perhaps, or the back of Skarm’s head…wherever he struck, the attack would do a solid bit off damage since Skarm would (hopefully) be too preoccupied with her sudden loss of air to try and counter a possible attack.

Of course, even with Ripper’s amazing Attack stat and his Technician Ability giving his weaker attacks more power, Skarm would most likely be able to easily brush aside my Pokemon’s Bullet Punch, and this is taking into account the Flying/Steel Pokemon being (possibly) distracted by Ripper’s Vacuum Wave. She had taken a full-strength Brick Break to the head without breaking a sweat, after all. In all truth, though, even if it did less damage than I was expecting, I would be fine with that. Despite her raging, I could see Skarm was beginning to grow a tad weary. Using too much strength from here on out might knock her out…

…or worse, considering the state the current platform we were on. As the battle between Scizor and Skarmory went on, the platform and thick pillars holding it up seemed to take more and more damage, even though they weren’t being hit (for the most part) by any of the attacks being tossed around. I took my attention from the battle for just a second, worriedly glancing around and wondering if the faint groaning noise I’d heard was in my imagination or if it had really come from the strain being put on the damaged tower. If the pillars or platform gave out…I hated to think what might happen to not only us, but the Wild Pokemon that called this place home.

    BP#8 (Vs. Skarmory Post 3)

Vacuum Wave was solely a powerful thrust that forced away air to create an invisible, quick ranged attack. At least, that's what I thought it was at first, but Saundra's ingenuity proved me wrong, as she had her Scizor use the attack to deprive the Skarmory of the air it needed to continue screeching. Thankfully, it was instant, and no lasting damage would be done, but a quick loss of the ability to breathe would shake up anything (well, anything that breathed in the first place). Ripper capitalized with a quick blow to the side of the skull, dazing it even further.

Skarmory was completely unable to respond to Scizor's blows through combat; having its breathe taken away and being smacked in the skull drained most of its energy. The Steel-Flying-type struggled to move, and bits of its chestplate and long feathers from its wings began to fall off. Skarmory seemed to be able to move once again without all the weight on it, and it'd be able to recover the bits it lost with some rest, as it effectively was losing a bit of a "shell". The metal bits and blades fell to the platform as Skarmory readied itself for the continuing fight…

"…are to aid in the movement of Pokémon and the closure of Outer Heavens." A message came to my phone. It amazed me how the other rangers were able to tinker with it and give it more walkie-talkie-like features, but I wasn't exactly used to using it as such yet. "I repeat: all Rangers not currently escorting a Trainer are to aid in the movement of Pokémon and the closure of Outer Heavens." I suspected our current tower's state was part of the problem, but repairs were done constantly, and they never closed off the whole area… Maybe they wanted to repurpose the area, as it was the most outlying region in the park.

An inexperienced Trainer might have started to panic at the sight of Skarm’s chest plating and blade-like feathers falling to the ground, assuming the Pokemon to be badly injured and its armor broken beyond repair. I, however, had been around enough Pokemon to know what the Autotomize move looked like. Granted I had been just as alarmed the first time I paid witness to it; a Steelix had used it ones and shed the blunt protrusions jutting out from its body. I hadn’t known what to think until the Pokemon’s Trainer informed me it was a newly discovered move, and that the lost pieces would quickly grow back in a few months with the help of plenty of extra minerals in the Pokemon’s diet.

After shedding some extra weight by discarding unnecessary parts, Skarm looked ready to continue battling despite the fact that she was still somewhat stunned by Ripper’s Vacuum Wave-slash-Bullet Punch. I smiled a little, impressed with the Pokemon’s stamina and determination. She would definitely make a great addition to the team, but if I wanted to make that happen I had to be careful. Skarm’s HP was beginning to disappear fast, and if I wasn’t careful she might end up knocked out.

I was momentarily distracted from the battle between Ripper and Skarm when Siless’s phone started to emit some kind of radio broadcast. I only caught parts of it over the rain pouring around the tower, but I heard enough to be concerned. Something about moving Pokemon and closing Outer Heaven. Once again my eyes were drawn to the damaged structure around us, and another ominous rumble picked that moment to make itself heard. I looked back at the battle taking place, frowning a little in concern. We were right at ground-zero, you could call it; since we were here, we were in a good position to start helping with evacuating Pokemon. There was no doubt that such an undertaking would be massive and require as much manpower as could be spared. At the same time, I had a feeling that this was just about over with Skarm. I hated the idea of just leaving her after all she’d gone through, to be rounded up and bustled off to an entirely new home with no one being there to help her adjust. The best thing for her was to finish this as quickly as possible and then catch her. After that I could give my assistance to the Rangers in moving Pokemon if they needed the extra help, which I was certain they would.

“Ripper, we need to bring this to a close!” I called to the armored insect. He didn’t respond, instead keeping his eyes on Skarm. She’d just literally lightened her load, after all, and could probably move nearly as fast as he could now. Taking his attention off her wouldn’t be a good thing to do right now. “Since Skarm is just about as fast as you, we’re going to have to rely on the moves that let you go all the quicker! Use Quick Attack to dart around and confuse Skarm; once you’ve done that, move in for a Night Slash!”

Ripper wasted no time in carrying out his commands. Whether he was eager to end the battle or if he was also aware of the condition of the tower was hard to say, but he was most certainly moving with vigor and concentration that I hadn’t seen in a long time. Not that Ripper ever slacked off in battle, mind you; it’s just that he only normally went in to this sort of elevated level when things are really down to the wire. It didn’t really matter what caused it, but if there was ever a need for it, this would be that time.

Practically vanishing from sight, Ripper’s Quick Attack would allow him to seemingly teleport from place to place. He would be visible here for one moment before blinking from sight, appearing in another place entirely while he took the chance to breathe; after all, when you’re moving at those speeds, it becomes impossible to breathe while in motion. Here and there he would jump about, confounding the opponent until they could no long track him. At that point he would strike, usually from the front so as to shock the opponent and leave them momentarily defenseless.

The point of using Quick Attack here, though, was mostly to get Ripper in a position so his Night Slash would have the most effect. If my idea was successful, Skarm would be left as dazed as she was now once Ripper executed his Quick Attack. Because she wouldn’t be able to react immediately to the situation, Ripper would have a few precious seconds to take aim at vulnerable place on Skarm’s body and make the attack extra-effective. In this case it would be Skarm’s chest; after shedding some of the armor plating there, her armor was weakest in that spot and was the easiest for Ripper to hit. The inky black Dark energy that would coat Ripper’s pincher might not in itself do much damage, since Dark energies were dispelled by the properties of many types of metal, but the blow from the attack should do enough to make Skarm ready for capture.

As Ripper went about performing his attacks, I fished a third Hyper Ball from my pocket and rolled it between my fingers. I couldn’t help but keep glancing at the cracked pillars and platform; I’m certain I was just imagining it, but I kept seeing new cracks forming everywhere I looked. I shook my head and focused on the battle, ready to chuck the Hyper Ball when the chance presented itself after Ripper’s current assault. Things would turn out however they would, and no amount of (slightly paranoid) worrying was going to make that happen any sooner or later than it would. If nothing happened until long after the battle, then fine. If things should take a turn for the worse, then it would be dealt with then.

Saundra's Scizor was a blur of speed taking advantage of the weakened Skarmory; even as Skarmory gained enough strength to get some powerful lunges in at the bug-type, it was still too fast to catch up with, and Ripper countered with a body blow-and-claw combo that brought Skarmory to its knees. It was no surprise when the Skarmory was completely unable to resist the Hyper Ball's capture mechanism, but as I scooped up the Skarmory's ball into my bag, it was the last thing on my mind.

"Alright, so given the circumstances, I think we need to get off this thing pronto. Rangers are evacuating the lower levels as we speak." I drew out a Pokéball from my belt and released the Pokémon inside: Charizard. I had multiple Flying-type Pokémon that could support the weight of a Trainer ready, just in case, though I kept them back in these situations unless the Trainer needed them; Trainers tended to be far more comfortable with their own Pokémon in these situations, and I couldn't blame them.

"You have three Pokémon, but you still have the remainder of the run to go on if you want. We can either fly straight to the outpost, or I can find us a nice landing spot on the ground to continue, if you'd like."

I shook my head at Siless’s offer to continue my run, recalling Ripper so he could rest after the short but intense battle.

“Thanks, but I think I’ll pass. I don’t think I’ll find much better than the ones I’ve caught, and it sounds like things are about to get a little crazy around here. From what I can see here, it looks like your efforts will be better spent helping getting the Pokemon here to a safer location and assisting in getting the tower closed. If you need an extra hand I’ll be more than happy to hang around and help out.”

I didn’t know if Siless would accept my offer or if he even had the authority to, but I wanted him to know I’d be ready and willing to lend my assistance if it was needed.

“Oh, and before we get any further, I’d like to take the chance to thank you for taking my run over and leading me around. If it weren’t for you I wouldn’t have encountered Skarm or Sigil.”

"Just doing my job." The whole thing was rather fun, other than the whole structurally-unstable platform thing. And it was nice to be with a Trainer that cared about Pokémon, especially one that would volunteer her time after an exhausting trek, but...

"Not sure if I have the power to accept your help, but I'm certain we could get in contact with someone through the outpost. And while we're there, we can authorize your new Pokémon."

Hopefully the forms wouldn't take long. They didn't normally, but at times there was a jam at the outpost... and the sooner I got done formalizing everything, the sooner we could get the Outer Heavens evacuated. I was certain there was more than enough rangers on the job, but... still, I had to help out myself, and I couldn't do that fixing a paperwork problem.

    RUN ENDED
