Skarmory didn’t seem to notice us as we came down the twisting stairs to the platform it was on, but it was still cawing shrilly. The sound, now that we were right on top of it, was more grating than it had been before, and I couldn’t help but wince as the sharp noise stabbed at my ears. Ripper looked a bit irritated by the racket, but he stuck close to me in that overprotective way he had about him. I patted his back to get him to relax a little; I wanted him on guard but not as tensed as he was. He glanced at me but said nothing, turning his attention back to Skarmory.
As we descended I took in the scene of destruction laid out around my target. There was a set of deep scores in the stone platform, starting in the middle and trailing all the way to the edge of the heavy stone slab. I was amazed that something could have caused such damage in one go and wondered if the Skarmory here was the one responsible. There were also chunks of stone strewn about haphazardly, and more slices were carved out of the platform and stone pillars. Something major had gone down here, a huge battle of some kind. I could only wonder what had happened and where the others that had been responsible for the damage here were. Of course there was always the possibility that this Skarmory had done it all on its own for some reason; they were certainly capable of wreaking this kind of havoc if the mood struck them.
As we reached the platform and stepped off the stairs, I got a better look at the Skarmory that was shrieking at seemingly nothing. Even though we were still a fair distance away I could see it was slight in stature and looked paler than your average Skarmory, almost a light sort of tannish gray instead of silver. I also got glimpses of the undersides of its wings; instead of being a bright red hue, they were a sort of metallic lime-green. It appeared this particular specimen was a female, and a Shiny one on top of that. I could scarcely believe the stroke of luck that not only allowed me to encounter what was normally a rare Pokemon to begin with, but one with the ever-elusive gene that only affected roughly one out of eight-thousand Pokemon and caused them to have different coloration than normal.
I wanted to catch this Pokemon for certain, but the way she was acting had me cautious and loathe to just leap willy-nilly into battle. If anything I’d need to be more careful during this battle than any other so far, because it would be a shame to knock this beautiful creature out or risk her fleeing. I decided that for now, playing safe would be the best bet until I could figure out how Skarmory would react to the situation.
“Ripper, we’re gonna go ahead and get this girl in a battle,” I said softly to my Scizor. He simply nodded in acknowledgement, giving no further response. “I’m not sure why she’s so riled up, but a Pokemon that’s that irritated is bound to have the energy to use some strong attacks. Start with an Iron Defense, then use Agility. That way you’ll be able to dodge her attacks easier and even if she does hit you, you’ll be able to take it no problem. After that, go in for a surprise Brick Break and see if you can stun her for a few minutes.”
Ripper bowed his head once to show he understand his commands, then inhaled deeply and closed his eyes. By concentrating on each muscle group in his body, Ripper was able to tighten them and make bounce back the momentum of a foe’s physical attacks, making them do less damage. On top of his iron exoskeleton, the added Defense would make any of Skarmory’s physical moves much less effective. I wasn’t worried about any Special attacks this Skarm might know; they’re ability to use Special moves wasn’t anything too impressive, and unless it had the luck of somehow having a Fire-typed Hidden Power, none of the Special moves it knew would be super-effective against Ripper. This meant he’d most likely be able to easily shrug off pretty much any Special move Skarm threw at him, since at best they’d only do neutral damage.
After tightening the muscles in his lean body, Ripper did the exact opposite with a very specific group of muscles. Those in his chest, certain ones in his back and shoulders, and the ones in his wings were relaxed greatly, allowing his wings to move at much faster speed than normal. With this boost in wing capability, Ripper would be able to move at twice his normal speed, which was pretty fast to begin with considering he was covered in hard iron armor. His clear wings becoming nothing but a whirring blur, Ripper released the focusing breath he’d taken and opened his eyes. There was a sort of gleam in those feral yellow orbs, one that spoke of a sort of restrained excitement. It had been a long time since Ripper had been able to show his stuff in battle, and despite his Serious nature I could see he was eager to have a chance to stretch his limbs and knock the rust off his skills.
And the next thing I knew, Ripper was gone, using his incredible speed to tear off towards Skarm. I caught a brief glimpse of him as he sped to where the iron-armored bird was screeching herself silly, and in that moment I saw him approaching her from behind, one arm cocked back and his pincher gaping open. That would create two points of impact instead of one, giving him a better chance of hitting a weak spot in Skarm’s protective hide and deal extra damage, as well as possibly stunning her for a moment and giving Ripper a chance to further prepare for battle without worrying about being attacked himself.

OOC: Obviously you can say either or both Agility or ID failed; I just described them as they were happening because I’m tired of explaining how they’ll look when used in the future lol.
