While waiting at the Valley Outpost, my Gardevoir complained of a powerful outside force making her feel somewhat hazy. She insisted she was alright, but I still made a note of it. If nothing else, we had to be wary of what could be causing it.

Other than that, the wait was long and boring. My Gardevoir, Sela, didn't have any other issues, and because I made sure to get to the outpost significantly earlier than the allotted time, I lost a good bit of pocket change to the vending machine grabbing lemonades. I suppose it wasn't my best idea, and if anything, it convinced me I had to either bring reading material or upgrade my phone by the time I got my next run. It would be infinitely easier once Ceasar got there, but before that I had my own and Sela's boredom to deal with.

Perhaps showing up an hour early wasn't the best idea.

@Prometheus_II; If you have any questions about anything, let me know. Also, your sign-up says that Zorua is Naughty, but your Application says it's Impish. You need to choose one and update—after that you can't change it.

    NBP#1

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Ivy didn't want to know what was in the week's old Tupperware container. She didn't even check the name on it as she swiftly scooped it into the garbage can. She thought she caught a glimpse of something brown and furry, and she really didn't want to know.

Despite the many reminder fliers about cleaning up after oneself and not leaving old food in the fridge, people still did it. She expected that, really, but when she brought her own things to work, she did not want them sharing the space with... that. On slower days, Ivy resigned herself to cleaning out the staff room—with emphasis on the fridge.

The woman brushed her hands off as she stepped back to look at her handiwork. With the last of the old food and containers gone, the inside of the cooler sparkled clean. All of the good food, as well as the condiments and other things they kept permanently in the thing, were lined up on the table she leaned against. That would last them another week.

She wiped sweat from her brow and brushed her long, red hair behind her shoulder and out of the way. Her long vest had been removed too, since moving around made it way too hot, even with air conditioning. The red garment was draped over a chair back, leaving her in just her black three-quarter sleeve and cargos.

Haji, her Espeon, sat on another chair to watch her work. She could tell from their mental connection that the purple cat was slightly amused, like he always was. He normally watched whatever she did.

Then, there was a knock on the door. The Ranger turned. She was met with another woman a little taller than herself, with honey-brown hair that curled perfectly to sit just above her shoulders. It was Claudia, one of the more mature secretaries. She was also one of the longest employed, since some of the other Casanova Rangers hadn't been able to ask her out.

She let out a low whistle. “I haven't seen the fridge that clean in a while. Looks good.”

    “Thanks, Claudia. Need something?”

“Right,” she said as she nodded and held up a manilla file folder. “This just came in—a Trainer wanting to go to the Valley. Looks like he's never been here before, and he's only got one Pokemon. Unevolved too,” she added.

While normally that wasn't a problem, longer runs tended to wear out a single Pokemon, especially if it wasn't evolved all the way. They were going to have to be careful in both how and what they selected to battle.

“More the researcher type too from what I read, so maybe not built for the outdoors. Thought I would take it to you personally to see if you were interested. You take a lot of newcomers.”

Ivy nodded. “Thanks, Claudia, I will. Just let me get all this junk back into the fridge and I'll be on it. You can leave the files here. I'll look at them before heading out.”

The other woman waved goodbye, and the Ranger finished putting the non-spoiled food back into the cooler. With that done, she gave a tired sigh and slid her vest back on. Cleaning was always a lot of work. As she adjusted her sleeves and pulled her hair out of the collar of the vest, she paged through the folder. A Zorua was on the entrance application. To her knowledge, that type of Pokemon couldn't heal themselves either. Battling would definitely have to be careful.

She dumped the papers off in her office as she gathered the rest of her supplies, and Haji followed, watching her from his perch on her rolling office chair. That was one of his favorite places. He waited calmly until she finished.

“Okay, ready to go?” she asked. He simply nodded.

Ivy reached down to touch his fur, and then she felt his energy spike. There was a sensation of nothing, and her vision swam as it was hard to breathe for just an instant. Then, she felt her feet hit solidly on the dirt path in front of the Valley. The storage shed was just off to her right, and the road they would be taking led down the slope and into the valley proper.

For now, they headed over to the shed and planted themselves on the wooden bench there. Haji hopped up next to her and curled up. As Ivy settled down, she frowned, rubbing a finger over a spot on the armrest. “I just painted this,” she commented, seeing where the mahogany paint had chipped already. She shook her head.

Then, they waited for the Trainer to arrive.

@WinterVines: Ah. Right. Derp. Yes, the nature is Impish; I'll fix that right after I post here, sorry.

I braked hard, skidding a little on the top of the hill. Looking around, I saw...well, not much of anything. "Invectives. I swear that PDA directed me right here, AND the road leads here." I shielded my eyes and attempted to look further, in vain. Sighing, I reached down to my belt and pressed the button on Coyote's ball. In a swirl of bright white aura, a shiny Arceus burst from the ball in all its glory. I blinked for half a second before shaking my head and pressing a button on my PDA. The resulting pulse of Fighting-type energy wasn't enough to reasonably be called an attack, but it did have the effect of disrupting my Zorua's illusion. He shook himself, pretending nothing had happened, and looked at me expectantly. "Oh, knock it off, you little show-off. I'm looking for a Ranger-the message said she'd be over by the storage shed. Little help?" The jet-black fox Pokemon nodded and zipped off in a blur of Agility. He'd be back shortly, and for now I contented myself with checking my equipment. Fortunate I did-my crossbow's swing mechanism was stuck, thanks to the humidity, and I dried it off with a little WD-40. I'd just finished this when a black blur rocketed up to the front of my bike and resolved itself into Coyote. He yipped, and struck a pose reminiscent of a pointer or a hunting dog. "That way, eh? Right. Back in the ball you go-don't want to wear you out before we get there." Coyote acquiesced without a fight, and shimmered his way back into the ball. I resumed pedaling, flicking off my nearly-useless GPS. Before too long, I spotted the shed mentioned in the message. I also spotted a woman in a Ranger's uniform, and a Pokemon sitting next to her. I couldn't make it out from here, but it was purple and around the size of Coyote. The problem was, it was downhill, and a bit too steep to trust my folding bike to. I hopped off, neatly folded my handlebars and front wheel in, and tucked the lightweight aluminum into my messenger bag. I walked on down, hoping I'd get in quickly-I hate red tape, and I'd already walked through some of it. I waved, hoping the Ranger would take notice.

    NBP#2

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Haji's ears twitched, and Ivy felt his mental energy reach out, indicating that someone was approaching. When she looked down the gravel road, she saw who it was.

He was a tall and thin guy, and even if she hadn't read his file before coming out here, she probably would've pegged him for some sort of scientist. He had that researcher feel to him even while missing the stereotypical white lab coat.

He waved at her as he caught sight of them, and she stood as he approached, straightening out her long red vest. The purple cat jumped off the bench to sit beside her.

“Hey there,” she greeted, holding out a hand to shake. “I'm Ivy Frost, the Ranger for this trip. This is Haji,” she added, gesturing to the Espeon beside her. He blinked up at the newcomer calmly.

When the researcher got close, she also caught sight of what he was holding. It was some sort of crossbow. The guy was a little scrawny, she supposed, so more than likely he needed the help while in the field. She had taken a hunter through Deckbi before, who had been a collector of rare Pokemon. He hadn't caused any problems, but...

“Just as a precaution, if that thing causes problems or is being used in a disproving way, I'm going to confiscate it. We don't allow weapons here at the Park, even if that's not its main purpose, so I'm going to be watching closely. Other than that, we should be good to go,” she said. “If you'll follow me, we'll head down the slope here and into the Valley itself.”

Ivy kept to the dirt path, stepping carefully as she crested the hill so they could actually go into the Park proper. Eventually the dust and pebbles gave away to dull grass that waved softly as the breeze went through. When the slope ended, the area opened up into a plain. On either edge the trees put up a dark fence, and on the other side were sandy strips that lined the cave system. Much ahead of them were long, dry grasses, and in the back of the place a small lake resided. A few streams trickled into it. The main feature in this area was the tall, branching tree almost in the middle of the open area.

“Well, was there a certain area you wanted to explore or a type of Pokemon you were looking for?” Ivy asked.

Before he could answer, there was a rustling in the tree, sending leaves floating to the ground. She looked up into the dark patches, where foliage and branches had hung close together, and a pair of yellow and blue eyes peered out at them.

With an eerie chuckle, the orbs disappeared. When Ivy next looked, there was a dark gray-blue head with a spike on top peeking out from behind the tree's trunk, tilting its head sideways to look at them.

“Well, there's a Shuppet,” she said. “Do you want to battle this one or try to avoid it?”

I shake the Ranger-Ivy's-hand, nodding politely. Her Pokemon appeared to be an Espeon, probably a strong one too. Interesting name, too, with interesting connotations. Probably best not to pry, though. "Hi, Ivy. The name's Prometheus, though it's really more of a nickname than anything. And actually, the crossbow's pretty heavily modified." I pull out one of my bolts, showing her the Park Ball firmly affixed to the end. "It's designed to provide an extra edge for captures-if the Pokemon has less time to react to the incoming ball, it should be less prepared to attempt to break loose. I don't even have any non-Ball bolts. But if you would prefer..." With a practiced flick of my wrist, I swing the "wings" of the collapsible crossbow in, fold down the stock, and stick it into a holster at my belt. "Personally, I'd prefer to head into the main valley-I've forgotten to bring a parachute if I fall off the cliffs." I smile, to show that I'm joking. "Sorry, bad one-I've been told that I got my sense of humor because nobody else wanted it. In any case, I'm looking for Psychic-types, or maybe a few Ghosts. After all, that's mostly what's here, isn't it? Solrock or Solosis would be great, but I doubt I'm that lucky." An eerie chuckle startles me, and I whip my head around to catch the Shuppet fading into view. “Well, there's a Shuppet,” Ivy states-more calmly than I would have, after being startled by the Ghost-type's sudden appearance. “Do you want to battle this one or try to avoid it?” I look at it for a few heartbeats. "Hmmm...I think I'll save my Balls." Wincing internally at the accidental double entendre, I continue "The history on Shuppet and Banette kind of scares me-abandoned toys seeking revenge?" I shudder a little. "I think we can sneak past it-and if not, I've got some accordion and bagpipe music recorded."

@Prometheus_II; Pokedolls are 500 if you want to use one, and you extract money from your stats and post in an OOC just like you would a Mart purchase. You can try to escape again, but only the first time is free—the Pokemon will probably try to attack if you attempt to escape again normally, even if the escape works. Battling or reasoning is an option too.

    NBP#3

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Prometheus debated for a moment. He said he was mostly looking for Psychic-types and Ghosts, and since that was a lot of the species here, he chose the right place to visit. He specifically mentioned Solrock and Solosis, but Ivy couldn't comment. It was never concrete what would show up and what wouldn't. It was all luck-based. All Trainers could to do improve their odds was using repellents and voice disks to try and draw the types they wanted.

He considered the Shuppet behind the trunk. “Hmm... I think I'll save my Balls. The history on Shuppet and Banette kind of scares me—abandoned toys seeking revenge?”

“Yeah, I hear you. It kinda creeps me out a little too. We can try to get around this one—if it lets us,” Ivy replied.

She moved carefully but decently quickly so they wouldn't draw the ghosts attention. She heard the whisper of it brushing up against the tree though, and she crinkled her nose as it floated around to hover in front of the group.

“Pet?” it asked, tilting its head to the side again. It looked like it was the curious type.

“Well, I don't think it's just going to let us pass, unfortunately. There's a couple ways we can go about getting past it. You could try to scare it or fulfill its curiosity with a battle—but that has the downside of your own Pokemon getting hurt. The same goes for trying to talk it into letting us pass—if it doesn't like what you're saying, it could lash out. I do have some Pokedolls on hand, but as per Park policy, they'll cost you.”

She let the situation sink in and gave him time to think of what to do next.

I cursed under my breath as the Shuppet floated around; a couple heartbeats later, a grin spread across my face-a grin I've been told sends sane people running for cover. "Curious, eh? Well, then, let's give it something to wonder about..." I unhooked Coyote's Pokeball from my belt. The Ball was slightly modified, as were most of mine, so the Pokemon inside could hear what was being said on the outside. Holding it up, I stated calmly, "Ring around the rosy. Keep it flashy and be on the bounce. It's a Ghost, you'll be fine." The black fox Pokemon inside showed its teeth in a slightly sinister grin, and crouched in preparation for the technique. I looked back up at the Shuppet, still with that grin on my face. "Well, then. You're curious, aren't you." The Shuppet seemed to nod, or perhaps it was just the way it floated. "Want to see what's going on here, eh? Well then...you'll get it!" I tapped the button on the Ball, releasing Coyote, who immediately zoomed off. Not very far, though-he immediately boomeranged back, this time glowing with the energy required for his favorite Agility technique. His illusory powers were getting a workout as well, flaring around him like a trail of fireworks, but without the noise. I had stepped smartly back, motioning for Ivy to do the same. The Shuppet was left standing alone as Coyote came back around, and began dashing at very high speeds around the poor little Ghost. He was jumping as well, and leaving quite the glowy trail-almost like a Tron light-cycle, but without the harm. He'd tested this technique out on me once, and I'd been very dazed and confused. And I'd been expecting it. Just let that Shuppet try to even pick out Coyote in that, let alone hit him!

@Prometheus_II; Gender of Shuppet? That's something you get to pick.

    BP#1

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Prometheus started grinning, and it appeared that he changed his mind about battling this ghost after all. He stopped and looked at the Shuppet, saying, “Curious, eh? Well, then, let's give it something to wonder about...”

Then, he released his Pokeball, and a small, black fox emerged in a burst of light. Ivy immediately recognized it as a Zorua, the beginning stage of the trickster fox Zoroark. Ivy's Sheba was somewhere around, probably in the Valley somewhere, an she knew her own Zoroark would've been happy to meet this little one. Maybe they would run into her. She did like to wander.

The small fox burst into a dash as soon as he was able, sprinting around and glowing with energy he was using to propel him around. It looked like an Agility. It certainly did make him hard to follow, although she knew Pokemon like Haji, who could sense energy with their minds, didn't need eyes to see. If necessary, the Espeon could slightly share that power with her because of their Psychic bond. Just from the link they had, she was already a little sensitive to energy being used.

The Zorua zoomed around, maybe trying to intimidate the foe. His form blurred so much that sometimes it was hard to see exactly where he was. The ghost didn't looked to worried, though, instead watching the fox with its eyes peacefully. It was a look similar to the one Haji always sported. The ghost was probably pretty calm too.

Then, the Shuppet giggled a little mischievously. As Ivy looked, the ghost began to split in two, peeling the halves from each other like two pieces of paper stuck together with gum. Then, those two forms each multiplied, and then they multiplied again. In total, there were six different ghosts, all hovering above ground and staring at the fox.

Ivy couldn't tell them apart. They all looked identical in shape, color, and even mannerism. They had blue and yellow eyes fixed on the Zorua. Then, they all started to chuckle at the same time, and in the mostly empty field, it echoed off the trees and the ground eerily. All the copies bobbed up and down rapidly, and then their skirts seemed to twitch, forming a “bring it on” gesture toward the fox.

The Ranger saw a tick form on the Zorua. “Uh oh, that looks like a Taunt. Be careful that your Pokemon doesn't attack in a blind rage. If you give him some sort of direction, he'll probably have much better aim. Although, which ghost is the real one is anyone's guess...” she said quietly, mostly to herself.

She knew she could ask Haji for help, but that would be like cheating. Part of the fun of being a Ranger was seeing how the battles turned out. She had learned a lot of strategies for her own battling this way—both in and out of the Park. Professional battling earned a lot more coin than even some of her busier weeks, and her Pokemon all needed to be fed. Oh, and rent paid too.

It seemed the ghost was going easy on him right now, which was good. She didn't know if the Shuppet sensed he was new, or if that was just part of his nature. It could've been in response to what the fox had done, since the turnout was about the same. It probably hadn't struck first since the Zorua didn't. Prometheus was definitely going to have to do some damage to the creature before he tried to catch it, however. Even if the battle took a long time, the ghost was just too full of energy—it would break out of the capture device if it wasn't worn down a little.

She wondered what the Trainer was going to do next. With the ghost Taunting him, the Zorua may not do anything but attack his foe, and unless Prometheus directed him, the ghost could easily counterattack. She could only wait and see.

@WinterVines; The Shuppet should be male, if possible. TOP HAT AND MONOCLE FOR THE WIN. Also, can I call an attack like Faint Attack, which is an automatic hit in the games, as an automatic hit here in the RP?

Well, that could have gone better. Not only was the Shuppet not even dazed, it had let off a Taunt-an attack I hadn't counted on. I couldn't spend too much time distracted, so I decided to see if I could snap Coyote out of it the way I usually do in situations like these. "Give in to the dark side, young Padawan!" Movie references usually made Coyote at least snicker a little, and this one was in-context enough that it should be funnier. If that didn't snap him out, I wasn't sure what would. "Go with the flow, and give as good as you get!" This strategy, Coyote understood, especially seeing what the Shuppet had just done. He set off in a quick loop around the group of Shuppet, once again shimmering with energy. Only this time, it was a muted version of every color of the rainbow-his Night Daze attack. Instead of attacking directly, though, he was leaving clones of himself behind to copy the Shuppet. After a single full loop, with a tail of shadow clones making a ring, he sped up, creating a much more indistinguishable ring. A sudden slash of night-black energy across the circle told me that Coyote had made his move-a Faint Attack, an attack which never missed. Hopefully, at least. He'd keep doing that until he could weed out all the clones-and hopefully hit the real one once or twice in the process. His own clones provided a shield, making the Shuppet less likely to attack. My second order, "Give as good as you get," gave a less clear instruction I hoped would make it through the haze of Taunt-to Taunt back at some point or another, preferably with multiple clones to do it. Let's see how that Shuppet liked a taste of its own medicine!

@Prometheus_II; Nah, no move is auto-hit in the Park. Battle outcomes are completely up to the Ranger. Also, careful saying what happens with your attacks because of the same reason—whether they work out or not is up to the Ranger still. Battles are more likely to go your way if you describe them in detail and explain them, whether that be out loud to your mon or in your head is fine. There's also the added bonus of more characters, which increases the capture rate too.

Also, sometimes your posts are hard to understand because they're in one big paragraph. Can you try splitting them up so they're easier to follow? I didn't exactly understand one of your commands clearly.

The Zorua was shaking his head—probably trying to get rid of the rage that Taunt tended to overcome Pokemon. She had seen others completely ignore everything else before, like there was a roaring in their ears that prevented them from hearing anything else. This one looked mostly alright, she guessed, although she wasn't sure if he was going to break out of it or not.

The ghosts continued to giggle, looking totally relaxed. It probably had to use this strategy against other wild Pokemon there, since there were plenty of Dark and Ghost-types. Sometimes they picked on each other or had friendly fights. It wasn't anything serious; if a Pokemon was causing problems like that, they tended to move them around so they didn't interact.

Prometheus called to his Pokemon. “Give in to the dark side, young padawan!” he said. Ivy recognized the reference but wasn't sure how it would affect the Zorua. “Go with the flow, and give as good as you get!”

At that point, Ivy wasn't sure what he was referring to, especially with the Taunt affecting his Pokemon. The dark fox swiped at his ears like they bothered him, and then he braced himself to dash off.

He lunged right at the first ghost he came across, who gave a screech and poofed into smoke as the fox crashed through it, going almost invisible for a second right before he struck, hitting with claws and teeth. The copy disappeared as Coyote looked for a new target.

“Some Pokemon can be snapped out of a Taunt if they're trying to do a trick. Your Zorua looks like it likes to do those,” Ivy told the Trainer. “Maybe you could try explaining it in more detail to get through his fog? It doesn't look like the words went through. Maybe he needs you to really lay it out for him. The rage induced by a Taunt can be really strong,” she advised. While some Pokemon were less affected by some moves, it didn't mean immune all the time. She had a feeling that the fox would come to his senses if they developed an elaborate prank or trap, though he might have to explain it more for it to work.

As the Zorua rushed at the ghosts again, they came closer together to form a ring. A dark energy glowed along their outlines, growing bigger as the fox approached. When he lashed out to strike, they released the attack, and a dark burst radiated out from the ring of Shuppets. Coyote gave out a bark as he was hit, but he did manage to crash into another ghost. It exploded in a whirl of smoke. Another copy down.

The dark fox didn't look too hurt, thankfully, but she doubted the ghost would play games for much longer. The four that were left whirled around and spun in place, and then with a blink, two of them disappeared, melting into the shadows. Two were still visible, but Ivy wasn't sure which ones were real and which were fake.

It would make sense if the real one had vanished so it wouldn't get hit. Copies could still do some limited actions, even though most of them were illusions. If the two floating in plain sight were indeed fake, it would leave the Zorua wide open from an attack from the real one when it emerged.

On the other hand, the real one could be one of the two visible, and it could just want them to think that the real had gone into hiding. The ghosts had stopped laughing, but they didn't look worried either, keeping their bodies calm and waiting for the fox to make another move. If the fox tried to out-wait the invisible ones, the real one could see and strike too.

Prometheus was going to have to be pretty careful with his next move. If he couldn't be snapped out of the Taunt, Coyote would likely attack the two ghosts visible—and that might play right into the Shuppet's hands. However, if they could lay a tricky trap of some sort, they may be able to turn the battle in their favor.

@WinterVines; Sorry, I'll try to remember both of those.

Again, this was not turning out to be as easy as I had expected. Fortunately for me, I had one more trick up my sleeve. Literally. I pulled my sleeve back to reveal my Pokegear, booted up the music app, and hit "play." A blast of music exploded from the speakers, only a little tinny-these were homebrew-and I could see Coyote start at the sudden noise.

This wasn't just any music, however. This was one of the ones we trained to, when battling at the training grounds. A soundtrack, or theme, of sorts. The song was the Crimson Helm battle theme from the game Okami, a rousing call to arms. Coyote knew it, and (I hoped) was ready to lay the trap used to beat Crimson Helm in the game.

The first act was a simple explosion of Night Daze, creating a shadowy, Dark-type aura. At the very least, it would blind the ghost; if it worked fully, the copies might dissipate in the backlash from the attack, and the real ghost might become visible.

For the beginning, though, Coyote would hide in it. He could see through his own rippling shadow aura...but other Pokemon, even other Zorua and Zoroark, couldn't. The next tactic was to produce more shadow "smoke grenades" and turn the tables. The Shuppet wanted us not to be able to find the real one of it...we'd make it so he couldn't find the real one of us. If it did happen to fire into the right one, well, that was why Coyote made such big clouds.

OOC: Okay, so in simple non-RP terms, Coyote is using Night Daze as a Smokescreen attack with three properties. One, only he can see through it. Two, it won't dissipate in the wind. And three, if a foe is too close when it goes off, they may take damage from the Dark-type energy wave. He'll hide in it so the Ghost can't see him, create a lot more of 'em, and later(though I haven't described it yet) use Taunt himself to lure the ghost into the blinding cloud, where he can strike it hard without it knowing he's there.

@Prometheus_II; Careful about using words like couldn't, always, never, etc in regards to moves, since nothing is ever certain in the Park, and things like that just tempt Rangers to prove it wrong. Also, that explanation you did in an OOC could be in the post itself—since that's where the explanation should be clear. Besides, it's more MCR! It wouldn't hurt to actually call the command to your mon either, like I said in the last post. That would make the entire thing clear about what you want to do to both the Ranger and the mon. Sometimes subtle doesn't work with things like Taunt.

Prometheus put his mind to work in order to snap his friend out of the effects he was under. There was limited time before the ghost would either reveal itself as one above ground or emerge from the shadows and strike. Luckily, the Trainer came up with something.

He pulled back his sleeve to reach his gear. Ivy saw it was one of the portable models—the old one had been box-like and usually clipped to a bag. A version of hers was on her phone for convenience. He didn't go for any sort of Pokedex or anything, though. Instead, he flicked the button on the radio.

Chords of traditional drumbeats and flutes came from the device in a rousing rhythm. Coyote's ears twitched, signaling that he'd heard the sound. A lot of Trainers used music when working with their Pokemon, and Prometheus seemed to be one of them. Candle, her Chandelure liked a tune now and then too, whereas Haji liked quiet serenity best.

The music sparked something in the dark fox, however, as even Ivy felt his energy rise. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the Shuppet appear, slightly behind the Zorua and out of sight. He looked like he was trying to sneak up on the fox.

The ghost hovered closer, but before he could strike, a dark aura formed around Coyote. It burst outward in a wash of energy, streaking across the field. The Shuppet shrieked as he was hit, momentarily stunned. It was just enough that he didn't lash out at the Zorua right away. Even better, the energy hit the two visible clones and the third that had popped up along with the real one. They wouldn't have to worry about multiple copies now, at least.

Instead of the energy fading, however, it lingered, creating a murky fog around the field. She had seen a lot of other Pokemon do this and had even used the cover technique a few times herself. It made their forms a little hard to see, at least for her. A lot of Ghost, Dark, and Psychic-types used their other senses to locate foes, thought, honing in on their energy source—or lack of it, as what sometimes happened with her Espeon and Dark-types.

She wasn't sure how it was going to effect the fight. The swirling dark purple clouds wouldn't last forever, since using moves in unnatural ways was a little taxing, but it did make the view interesting.

Before too long, Ivy spotted a secondary wind come into play. This one was light against the dark and flecked with tiny shards and glinted in the sun. The slight blue tint gave away what it was—an Icy Wind. Who needed to see when you could affect an entire area?

The frozen shards whipped through the Zorua's fog, and she heard him yelp as he was struck. If the ice stuck to his fur, he might have trouble moving as well as he did before. The ghost wasn't too bothered by the change in terrain, it seemed—at least not enough to stop attacking. Still, the energy would probably help cover the fox a little and make him harder to hit.

Then, something else happened. The hairs on the back of her neck and arms stood to attention, and she got a chill down her spine. The Shuppet let out a devious chuckle, similar to the sound effects some of the Halloween decorations made. She felt the energy at work seconds before Haji leaned close and told her to brace herself. Ivy felt dizzy for an instant before the Espeon's energy washed over her. Then she could concentrate on what happened.

At first, she kept blinking her eyes to make sure she was really seeing. The air was... different. It was like the scene had turned into a picture under the water. It was literally rippling. She knew it was just an illusion caused by the displacement of energy, but it was still disorienting. She wasn't even the one moving in it and she still felt funny, even somewhat protected by Haji's energy. She couldn't imagine being in direct contact with it like those two.

“Hey, you all right?” she called to the Trainer, making sure he wasn't suffering any odd effects from the move. “I think that was a Trick Room. Seems the ghost is trying to disorient Coyote right back.”

He would have to be careful how he moved now. Even with the protective fog, the ghost had called up his own form of shielding. The wobbling force would make things a little tougher. At least, she thought the Zorua had worn off enough of the Taunt to act as normal now. On the other hand, while they may have been banking on the fox being invisible, they might have to worry about the same thing for the ghost.

@WinterVines; You make a good point.,

"Heh. You call this wobbly? This is...whoops...no worse than the time I got water trapped in my goggles." The bravado was all false, but hey, it really wasn't that bad. "Don't let it disorient you, Coyote! Keep going with the strategy!" I considered for a second, and bared my teeth in something that resembled a smile. "And...go ahead for immaturity, okay?" I couldn't see Coyote's face, but I could imagine the mirror of my own grin spreading across it.

Let's face it-a prankster Pokemon like Coyote is not going to be mature. He had approximately the sense of humor of a deranged, slapstick-obsessed 6-year-old, and cracked up whenever someone said "butt." I could trust him to turn his Taunt into something even nastier.

In any case, the strategy would go on, and Coyote would shoot out more Night Daze clouds with "bolts" of energy between them, in order to make it seem as if he had dashed into another cloud to avoid the ice. Then, Taunt would occur. I wondered idly which one he would choose-a middle finger towards the Shuppet, or a giant fart. Considering Coyote, it was debatable. Either way, I wanted to see how pissed off the Shuppet would be. And considering all it had done to poor Coyote, it was probably deserving of a little immaturity.

OOC: It's gonna be the finger, FYI.

@Spirit Zorua; I highly recommend describing how you want moves like Taunt or the attacks to go, otherwise the Ranger is left to their own interpretation and it might be far from what you had intended. Uni course is coming to a close, so I should have a lot more time once my major edits are done. Sorry if the post rambles—super tired right now cos of three days of class in a row.

Prometheus seemed a little wobbly on his feet, but he looked alright. If he could stay standing, he'd probably make it. “Don't let it disorient you, Coyote!” he called to encourage his Pokemon. With the inky fog, Ivy couldn't tell if the fox had heard or not. The Trainer also okayed for his partner to be immature, and she could only guess what was going to come out of that.

The Ranger didn't know what the plan was, but she hoped the Zorua did, because the Trainer wasn't giving any audio cues in the fight. Some Trainers and Pokemon didn't need that, but it was always helpful, especially if it was something strange was going on with the environment or the battlers, such as the Taunt Coyote had been under earlier. It just helped make everything clearer.

Then, the dark cloud kicked up again, bursting outward with a wave of energy. The Shuppet made a noise, but it didn't sound particularly pained, so it probably hadn't hurt the ghost much. Then there was a dark chitter noise, sort of like a lupine laugh. Ivy couldn't see either battlers in the murk, but if she had to guess, it was probably the Zorua.

There was a huffing noise then, but in a calm and relaxed tone. That was probably the ghost. Had the fox maybe tried to Taunt his foe or something? She couldn't quite tell.

A cackling noise echoed in the field, but it wasn't laughter. It was a sparking sound, like electricity. As she watched, flashes of light came down from a dusty wisp of a cloud, striking down into the black fog. One struck just on the edge, and then another hit a few feet away from that. The continued like that, regularly striking down all over the patch. It looked like a Shock Wave, which was lower power, but more accurate than something like Thunder.

There was a canine yelp, sounding sharp and echoing through the field. Coyote went quiet soon after that though. It only seemed like one bold had hit him. That had probably hurt a bit, regardless.

It looked like the ghost hadn't wanted to use any more technical moves anyway. Maybe it was tired of them. The Taunt would prevent any more for a little bit, at any rate. Coyote had used a fair few too.

The ghost still seemed calm, though, wherever it was in the fog. She wondered how long the Zorua was going to be able to hold up the energy. Probably not too long, especially if he started using other techniques. It would fade away soon most likely.

Now the Trainer was going to have to be really careful, though. Even without the Taunt, it seemed the Shuppet was now in the mood to attack. Coyote hadn't retaliated with too much yet himself, which could turn into a problem. The longer the battle dragged on, the more damage the Zorua would sustain, which would hinder his ability to fight later by tiring him out early on.

The ghost was definitely too full of energy to attempt capture right now. Luck was always a factor, but Pokemon that had too much spirit yet tended to just break out of the Park Balls. Prometheus would probably need to start attacking soon if he wanted to catch this Pokemon. Ivy would just have to wait and see how it played out.

@WinterVines; Okay, fixed now. Sorry 'bout that.

Coyote's laugh meant that he'd attempted the taunt, which was a good thing. I didn't know whether it had worked or not, though. Let's hope. "Alright. I have officially reached the limit of my patience with this ghost. Coyote?" Coyote yipped back, ready to take orders. "Carebearstare."

No, I wasn't referencing a little kid's TV show. Well, yes I was, but only in humor. Carebearstare was a specific technique I'd worked out with Coyote. It was a full-power, wide-bore Night Daze attack, almost a cone, the sheer volume of which was effective at connecting with the foe. The Night Daze itself was made of rainbow colors and filled with illusions of happy clowns, Tinker Bell-style fairies, and playful kittens. However, since Coyote was a Dark-type, I couldn't just leave well enough alone. Every color there was tinted dark, moldy, and blackened, as if it had been left out in the mud. The clowns had the terrifying grins you see in slasher movies. The kittens had needle-sharp, jagged teeth, mangy fur, and torn-up claws. The fairies were bat-winged and looked like withered harpies. Not only was it hilarious, it was Dark-type, damaging, and terrifying. And Coyote, if he let everything else go, could keep the attack going for a while.

Maybe the Ghost could escape it...maybe. Even if it broke out of the cone, the "fairies" would accompany it, dazzling it and making it harder to aim. And the Shuppet's Trick Room attack should affect both combatants equally, anyway.
