“It looks like Basculin is trying to pull a Swagger,” Makina warned. “if it's successful, your Gardevoir will be too angry to properly coordinate its attacks.”

“Riiight. Cheap bitch. Haxing moves are pretty lame, but we can play that game too.” Alex said, sounding a bit annoyed. “Stop her with Taunt. Then, it will be angry enough to maybe charge at you. That is when you hit it with a Charge Beam attack. Hit her nice and hard, don’t hold back. We need to get some more damage in, but more importantly, I want your special attack to go up, and Charge Beam has a high chance of making that happen. If we can get that up, your next move can do some real good damage.”

“Alright, I can do that then.” Mindbender nodded. She was preparing herself to send rude and insulting comments towards the Basculin telepathically. Whether or not that would work was beyond me. I had never seen her use it like this before, but it did sound to be more effective.

“Actually, stop that.” I quickly said. “Use Safeguard instead. That would be a better way to go than Taunt. We don’t want to send insult and get mad an already hostile Pokémon.”

“Yes, I know, I already started doing that.” She said.

“Without asking me first?” I asked curiously. “Why would you do that?”

“Technically, you did tell me to use Safeguard. I was reading your mind telepathically. In there you knew that Safeguard was a better move so I went with your judgment there. It was a good plan.”

“Hmm, I guess you’re right.” I shrugged. “I just wish you told me instead of just using it.”

“If you paid more attention to this battle instead of that ranger Makina then you would have realized it.” She said.

“Ugh, I hate when you’re right.” I groaned. “If I do this again, let me know. I have to stay focused, at least in battles.”

“Yeah, you do.” Shadow said, continuing to joke around. Mindbender used her Psychic powers to splash water at Shadow. He yelped and then let out a low growl. He stood behind me to protect himself from any more water.

Mindbender proceeded back to using Safeguard. After she would complete that, she would then start off charging her next attack, Charge Beam. It was a small beam of electricity that often times raised the special attack, that right there was what I was looking for.

This was another day I was heading into the Great Lakes. So far I had entered the national park to capture some Pokemon twice, each time I had gone to the great lakes. My first trip I had brought home an Alomomola, Psyduck, and a Toxicroak. I had ended up trading away the Alomomola and Toxicroak, but I had decided to keep the frog. As for my second trip, I had cut my run off early and returned home with a Staryu and Frillish. Despite only getting two mon I considered the second trip to be the best, simply for the Staryu and Frillish, two guys I had been looking for.

With those all captured I was ready to add to my water collection, there was a few choice Pokemon I wanted to catch. Hopefully run one would yield at least one of the Pokemon on my list, but that remained to be seen. I was optimistic.

I had just got to the lake entrance when I heard a message on the gate communicator when I heard a metallic voice. “Garth, if you can hear me, I already cleared you to enter so just come on in. I’ll meet you at the first lake.”

That must have been my ranger, one I had never encountered before. But he was already in the park so maybe that was a good omen for the rest of the run. I opened up the gate by scanning my ID into and entered the spacious park area.

Since I had already been here twice before I knew my around the park already and I quickly got on the main path that would lead to the first lake. It only took about three minutes to get there, and when I did the person who must have been the ranger was causally lounging against one of the trees there. I waved and walked over, anxious to start the run.

"Hey. You must be Garth. I am Alex, your Ranger today." I said, introducing myself. "Needlenose and I will be escorting you around this area while you capture whatever it is that you came here searching for. If you are ready, we shall begin."

"Okay then, let's go." I said, waving my hand at him for him to follow me. "From your file, I read that this isn't your first trip here. If there is an area you wish to go to... or avoid, let me know and we'll do just that. For now though, we'll just stick to the edge of this here lake." I looked into the lake and saw a blue bulb with two red dots. I picked up my binoculars and checked it out. "I think I see a Pokemon over there that you might be interested in capturing. Though, it is a fairly common Pokemon so you may not want it for that reason."

I led him closer towards the Pokemon so that he see what it was. The Tentacool slowly drifted over towards us. "If you do not wish to battle it, we can run. It appears to be moving slow enough that we can evade it."

“Riiight. Cheap bitch. Haxing moves are pretty lame, but we can play that game too,” Clyde replied, sounding like he was starting to get annoyed. He then grew silent, looking over at his Gardevoir once more. Either he was communicating with his Pokemon once more, or had grown distracted again; hopefully the former, as Basculin were not known for their patience.

<Don't sell my species so short,> Aria said, catching Makina's thought on the matter. <I can't speak for the Houndoom and the human, but only a truly airheaded Gardevoir would let their Trainer get too distracted in an important situation.>

Well pardon me for not being a mindreader, Makina snapped back. Unless his Gardevoir is still relaying some of their conversation to you?

<Her name is Mindbender, and yes. Stop being so impatient, they're about ready to attack now.>

Mindbender appeared to wave off her opponent's Swagger, focusing instead on setting up a shimmering sky-blue barrier around herself. This was Safeguard, which was a purely defensive move. While the barrier was up, the trainer's Pokemon were immune to status-inducing moves. Thanks to Safeguard, the Basculin's move was successfully nulled.

Basculin let off an irritated growl, and submerged into the water once more. When she was visible once more, it was much closer to the lake's edge, trying to get a better shot and she spat a large glob of mud towards Mindbender; apparently the Water-type had swam down to the lake bed and gathered a large amount of mud in her mouth. The glob hit Mindbender in the face, the sticky stuff slowing down her movement as she attempted to remove it from her eyes.

In retaliation, Mindbender shot another electrical charge at the Basculin, though this one originated from her hands instead. This was Charge Beam, a move that had an extremely high chance of raising the user's Special Attack. Sure enough, the Gardevoir glowed slightly from the added boost as the attack shot off. The beam seemed slightly off-target, but it mostly hit the water- a serious problem for the wild Pokemon. The water strengthened the electricity, doing increased damage to Basculin and causing it to shriek in pain.

As the Charge Beam faded, Basculin swam listlessly in the water, though managed to right herself after a few moments. While she was shaken, it was clear that this battle was still a ways away from over.

"Alright Mindbender, use a strong Energy Ball attack." Alex called out to his Gardevoir. He was somewhat confident that this blow would do major damage to the Basculin, which is what he wanted. He wanted to get in a good attack before attempting to capture it. Now that he had Mindbender get her Special Attack up and do some what decent damage, he could have her finish this off.

"Don't knock it out, but don't hold back either Mindbender." Alex said to her telepathically. "I want it weak enough for me to capture with out much difficulty. Being a hostile Pokemon, he knew capturing it wouldn't be as easy as he had hoped for it to be. He knew for sure that he would have a good chance once she used Energy Ball, but as of now, he would need a lot of luck to pull off the capture right now. Basculin still had a good amount of energy left, enough to knock the ball back and hit us hard with a counter attack.

"I know, I wouldn't purposely knock something out that you wanted to catch." She said. "I know the park rules and that if you cause a Pokemon to faint, you automatically can't capture it. I never got that, but yeah, I know the rules."

"Okay. It's just that you're incredibly strong, and I didn't want you to knock it out." Alex said.

"Well no need to worry. Have I ever disappointed you?" She pointed out.

"No, you actually haven't." He responded.

"Wow, you actually thought I would disappoint you?" She said, joking around. She could read his thoughts and she knew what he meant.

"Have I ever let you down?" Shadow asked. "I would never do that."

"Yeah, I know you wouldn't buddy. Though you play around too much." Alex said laughing.

"So do you, that is where I get it from." Shadow replied. Mindbender giggled and raised her arms, forming a small green ball of greenish yellow energy. The energy was mainly coming from the sun like Solarbeam, but it was a weaker, much faster move that did a decent amount do damage. Alex knew he had nothing to worry about. All he had to do was throw his Pokeball when the time came, which was getting closer and closer. He really wanted to move on already, but he also wanted to capture this Pokemon without rushing too fast and risking his Pokemon from taking too much damage.

“That’s me, nice to meet you,” I responded, shaking his hand. “I’m ready to leave whenever you are.”

“Okay, then let’s go.” He pointed at the path he wished to traverse, I knew it to be one that led around this great lake. “From your file, I read that this isn’t your first trip here. He glanced at the lake to our left and pulled out a pair of binoculars. He focused in on the water, he must have spotted a Pokemon out there.

Once we were close enough to see what it was I knew it to be a Tentacool, a Pokemon I already had in my possession. “If you do not wish to battle it, we can run. Despite already having a Tentacruel, I wanted to think about it for a couple of seconds. I knew my sister wanted one, but I also planned on getting her something else. After a moment I made up my mind, it wasn’t worth getting it right now because it was such a common Pokemon. “No, let’s leave, and if need I have a Pokedoll ready.”

“No, let’s leave, and if need I have a Pokedoll ready.” He said after taking a while to think about it. Unfortunately for him, he had taken to long deciding whether or not he wanted to capture it. The Tentacool had picked up speed and drifted over closer. It raised its tentacles and splashed water at us, trying to get Garth to battle him.

Garth however, was uninterested in doing battle with this Pokemon, so I grabbed the doll from him and handed it to the Tentacool. It carefully swam up towards me and then snatched the doll from my hand. It looked at the doll for a few seconds then retreated back to the spot where it came from and just floated there.

"Okay, we can proceed now. There is a small spot farther down where some interesting Pokemon lie. We can head there I guess." I said, leading the way. I headed down the edge of the lake for about ten minutes until I came across a smaller lake adjacent to the main lake. It was a lot smaller in size, probably a fourth of the main lake, which was the biggest lake here in the park. "Oh, look. There is a Krabby over there. It is a somewhat interesting Pokemon, are you interested in battling or even capturing it?"

“Alright Mindbender, use a strong Energy Ball attack.” Clyde called out to his Gardevoir as soon as the Charge Beam had faded. It was apparent that he wanted to keep an offensive in this battle while whittling away Basculin's health one move at a time..

Mindbender brought both of her hands together, and soon a small orb of light green energy began to form in front of her. The sphere slowly began to grow in size, going from about the size of a quarter to nearly double that in moments.

Basculin, seeing the Gardevoir ready yet another attack, began to swim about in a frenzy, leaping up from the water every moment or so to let out a loud screech. The movement, along with the added noise, made it even harder for Mindbender to concentrate and aim.

“That would be Uproar,” Makina warned the two during a brief pause in the screeching. “While Basculin won't be able to use any other attacks while it is riled up, the move packs quite a punch.”

Finally, Mindbender was able to get a lock on the wild Pokemon as soon as he diveddown into th water once more. Taking quick aim, she shot the Energy Ball, hitting the Basculin on the side. While the added boost from Charge Beam managed to strengthen her attack, the Water-type could clearly take a few more hits.

"Damnit, your attacks don't seem to be doing any real damage. It's all small crap. I wonder what is protecting this Pokemon? Is it somewhat immune to the super effective moves? It took on a Thunderbolt, Charge Beam, and an Energy Ball with her special attack risen a stage and it wasn't even at less than half of its normal strength." Clyde said, slightly irritated. This Basculin was proving to be more trouble than it was worth.

"I have no idea?" Mindbender shrugged. "Maybe I am just holding back too much? I will try and make my attacks more stronger without accidentally knocking it out."

"Well, super effective moves clearly aren't doing anything, so perhaps let us just use your strongest move yet?" Clyde suggested. "Use Psychic."

"Hmm, well, you're right. Psychic is my strongest move, in fact, it is my best move." She said.

"Just be careful." Shadow said. He was now lying underneath a tree resting while he waited for this battle to finish up. "This is a tricky bastard, watch out for his sneak attacks. I am sure I don't have to tell you this, but whatever."

"Yeah, just use that and Thunder Wave." Clyde said to her.

"Alright then, here it goes." She said as she begun to glow a deep blue color. She was going to attempt to make a mindlink with Basculin and send incredibly painful shock blasts through the Basculin's body. The shock blasts wouldn't be visible to the normal eye, but you could tell they were working if you saw the reaction on the Basculin's face.

After she did that, she would start Thunder Wave. Thunder Wave was a move that paralyzed the opponent if it successfully hit. It had great accuracy, but Clyde was expecting it to miss for some reason. He wasn't sure why. Anyways, he pulled out a Parkball and readied himself to throw it once Thunder Wave was launched. He wanted to be as precise as possible. If anything, he was going to have Mindbender guide the ball so that he wouldn't miss the target.

Clyde was ready to move on, so he really hoped that it wouldn't miss, but right now, he knew his chances weren't as great as it would have been had his other attacks did more damage, he could only hope that his luck would change here.

Sadly the little Tentacool decided that it would be best served by following us around. The little Poison and Water type Pokemon raised a tentacle at us in warning and I knew that I would be forced to part with a Pokedoll. I sighed in defeated and passed over a simply Clefairy doll. Pokedolls were fairly cheap at half a thousand, but over time they would add up. I didn’t have that much money left after dropping over one-hundred thousand on teaching my new Starmie so moves through some extensive training.

Alex took the doll and tossed it the small Pokemon. The Pokemon curled a tentacle over the doll and retreated back to its original spot with it, content to let u pass now that it had got something. I scowled at the little guy but carried on.

“Okay, we can proceed now. There is a small spot further down where some interesting Pokemon lie. We can head there I guess,” Alex said.

After about ten minutes of walking along the lake edge we ran across a much smaller one parallel to the bigger one. “Oh, look, there is as Krabby over there. It is a somewhat interesting Pokemon, are you interested in battling or even capturing it?” Alex asked, pointing at the small crab creature scuttling along the shoreline.

It was a good question, one I would need to explore before deciding on a path to choose. I pulled out my Pokedex and got a quick scan of the creature.

“Krabby, the River Crab Pokemon,” the automated voice of the Pokedex droned. “Krabby are a common Pokemon that are often found along beaches, lake shores, or at the bottom of rivers. Often red in color like its human cousin, it has two large sized pincers that it uses to catch prey and defend itself from attacks. Because of its small size and the tendency for its pincers to break off, it will often use Bubblebeam to distort its image and make itself look bigger. Despite that, it is a fairly aggressive creature, and will only retreat if a pincer breaks off so it can regenerate.”

I nodded in approval at the information and decided to check its stats once it eventually evolved into Kingler. It’s attack and defense were appreciably high, while its special attack and defense were woefully low. It’s speed was adequate, but not ideal. I was about to write the Pokemon off when I saw that it could learn the Sheer Force ability. Sheer Force allowed moves that had secondary effects to have its power increased, but that effect was negated. Coupled with the item Life Orb made it quite powerful indeed.

My mind made up I reached for a Pokeball. For this battle I decided to use my Poison and Fighting Pokemon known as Toxicroak.

“Come on out, Flipper,” I said, depressing the button in the center and causing the large purple frog to come out. The Pokemon croaked loudly at the Krabby to get its attention. Toxicroak’s sac deflated a moment later when the Krabby turned towards us.

“Good work, Toxicroak.” I want to start this battle off with your Fake Out move and follow that up with a Flatter move.”

Fake Out was a move that allowed the user Pokemon to strike first before all other Pokemon, it also had the added affect of causing the Pokemon that was hit by it to flinch. It wasn’t that powerful an attack, but it did allow my Pokemon to get a free hit in.

I had chosen Flatter as my second move because it boosted the special attack of the opposing Pokemon but caused them to be confused by it. I wanted this move because Krabby couldn’t really hit Toxicroak with that many special moves because it didn’t possess a lot plus its special attack was woefully. To top it it off I knew that a fair number of Krabby’s special attacks were either Water or Ice typed. Water attacks healed Toxicroak thanks to its Dry SKin ability and Ice typed attack wouldn’t hurt Toxicroak all that much because it was part Fighting, one that resisted Icy typed moves.

Overall, I was in a good feeling about this battle.

Clyde didn't seem none too happy about Basculin's endurance to take so many super-effective moves in a row, appearing to grow irritated. “Damnit, your attacks don't seem to be doing any real damage. “The Pokemon that live here have a natural hardiness to attacks,” Makina explained. “They're used to seeing Trainers pass through the area, so they've trained since a young age to endure multiple attacks, as well as picked up a few moves that they normally can't learn in the wild.”

<Save your breath for now, I doubt he heard you,> Aria said, shaking her head. <Besides, he's communing with his partner now, so it would be wise to wait until they're done anyways.>

Makina gave a shrug in reply, then turned her attention to the battle once more. Basculin was still caught in his uproar, so at least Clyde and Leo wouldn't have to worry about any change of attacks from the creature for a little while. Would they use this to their advantage?

Mindbender focused her gaze on the rampaging Basculin, and her eyes took on a shimmering blue shade as she did so. An aura of the same shade began to outline the Water-type as well, though for the moment nothing else happened. It wasn't until Basculin rose from the water once more, ready to continue his attack, that Mindbender activated her Psychic technique. The wild Pokemon was forcibly dragged to shore and slammed to the ground, too winded to let out another screech.

As the aura faded, Mindbender began to emit electricity like before, this one colored a light blue rather than the normal yellow shade. Concentrating the wave into a pulse, the Thunder Wave struck the still land-bound Basculin, gripping it with paralysis.

Seeing that Basculin was both out of his natural element and weakened, Clyde had fished out a Parkball and was now aiming towards the Pokemon, throwing the sphere as soon as Mindbender's Thunder Wave had faded. The Pokemon was sucked in and the orb shook once, twice- and the creature broke free before the third shake. Fortunately, the Parkball managed to miss the water, rolling a couple feet along the sandy shore.

Free once more, Basculin let out a final screech before diving back into the water. She seemed slightly more calm than before, though still eyed the nearby Gardevoir warily. The Uproar had ended, and now she was paralyzed as well; things were going slightly in Clyde's favor now.

Alex was beyond frustrated now. The only thing that has worked the way he wanted it too so far was Thunder Wave, everything else might as well have failed. His Parkball hit Basculin, but failed to capture it. He was disappointed.

"What do you want me to use now?" Mindbender asked him telepathically.

"I don't even know anymore." Alex shrugged. "I don't really think it matters. Any move you do won't do much damage. Use Thunderbolt again I guess. Use Psychic not as an attack, but as a way to keep it in the water to ensure more damage be done." I said to be. "Then levitate that Parkball I already threw over towards Basculin and capture that son of a bitch."

"Right away." She said. Immediately she began gathering as much electricity as she could. She was going to hit this Pokemon hard this time. I wasn't really expecting her to do much damage, but at least if it did a little, it might but her at the edge we needed to finally capture this Pokemon. She would launch her Thunderbolt at Basculin the moment that it was charged, if it attempted to jump out of the water, she would use Psychic to knock it down. It helped that Basculin was parayzed, but I doubted that it would active this turn.

Commencing...

He took a while to think about my question. He pulled out a Pokedex and did a quick scan. It looked like my brothers and I weren't the only ones that used a Pokedex in the park. I hadn't seen many trainers, but it appeared to be catching on now. It was a good way to start the battle because it gave a bit of useful... and useless information about the Pokemon at hand. Garth appeared to be satisfied with what he heard from the Pokedex, because he wanted to battle it. I waited to see which one of his four Pokemon he would use in battle.

“Come on out, Flipper,” He said, tossing a Pokeball in front of him. A tall, purple and red frog with poison sacs on both sides of his cheeks emerged. He was a pretty cool looking Pokemon.

“Good work, Toxicroak. I want to start this battle off with your Fake Out move and follow that up with a Flatter move.”

Fake Out was a move that made the user attack at a much faster speed than most other regular attacks. Almost always, the Pokemon would strike its opponent without the opponent striking back. It was a weak move, but it was better than nothing, and at least allowed him to strike first.

Flatter was an interesting choice. That move was like Swagger, but instead of raising the Attack stat, it rose the Special Attack. Now people would ask why he would do this, but the side effect was that it also confused the opponent, which made it extremely harder for it to land a blow. I knew that Krabby knew Water type and Ice type attacks, but I wasn't familiar with anything else it knew since neither my brothers or I had owned one before. One thing I was sure of though was that the Krabby's attack more than likely wouldn't do much to Toxicroak, which made him a great choice for this battle.

Toxicroak had already preformed his moves and was now waiting for Krabby to counter with something. The confused Pokemon began spraying water on the ground to get it nice and wet. I wasn't sure what the heck it was doing. Then, it turned its back on us and began scraping its legs on the wet area, sending clumps of mud towards Toxicroak. It was going pretty fast, I wasn't sure that Toxicroak could evade the attack.

Sure enough, Clyde's temper began to rise as Basculin broke free from the Ball and swam back into the water. Mindbender appeared to mirror her Trainer's temperament as well, launching off another Thunderbolt straight towards the wild Pokemon.

Basculin attempted to swim out of the way, but the movement was sluggish; she was still getting used to her hindered movement thanks to Thunder Wave. The bolt hit dead-on and, powered by the Gardevoir's malice and the water, appeared to daze the Pokemon. She floated limply in the water for the moment, trying to catch her breath.

While Basculin was unable to react, the Parkball hovered right above the Water-type before dropping down on the fish, powered by Mindbender's telekinesis. Once again Basculin was sucked in, barely shaking before the Ball let off a ping, confirming the capture.

“Well, that's one down,” Makina said. “I'll take that, if you don't mind?”

Aria relayed the message over to Mindbender, and the two conversed a moment before the Gardevoir transferred the Parkball over, and the sphere floated over Makina before the Ranger pocketed the ball into a side pack.

“Just say when you're ready to continue, and we can head out,” Makina said to Clyde.

Clye didn't want to let that one battle ruin his whole trip here, he still had long ways to go, and he was going to make it count.

Clyde took a moment to examine Mindbender to make sure she was alright. When he was content, he nodded towards Makina. "Okay, we're ready to go now." He said. He hoped he had more good stuff in store for him. He couldn't wait to see if he was going to encounter a Phione this time around or not. Knowing how rare they were, he wasn't sure what to expect.
