"So, have you ever challenged a Gym?" Phil asked Brad as they were walking. Somehow, there weren't many cars in Blackthorn, so it was fairly calm.

"Whitney," Matt chuckled, "what are you doing? We're in someone else's house!"

"We're gonna be really quiet ... and really careful," Whitney whispered in his ear.

"I'm not sure about this," Matt admitted.

"Come here," Whitney signaled for him to lean in. "If you agree, I'll ..." she whispered the rest in his ear.

Judging by Matt's raised eyebrow, he liked the idea.

"I've never challenged a Gym." Brad said. "I know that it's much different than a Contest battle, but they're still related in a way."

"I've met people who did both," Phil said.

"Did they make it far?" Brad asked.

"Yeah, they were pretty good," Phil replied. "And there are many famous Trainers who did or still do both battling and coordinating."

"Wow... oh! Like Fantina!" Brad remembered the Ghost-type specialist and Gym Leader in the Sinnoh Region.

"Kingdra, end their arrogance!" Clair shouted, "Dragon Pulse!"

"Me First!" Yukiko ordered. Seer and Kingdra loosed their attacks at the same time. The two pulses collided in a power struggle, with both sides pouring more power into their attacks. It looked like Kingdra was going to win, but with one strong burst of energy, Seer turned the tide in his favor, canceled out Kingdra's attack, and delivered the finishing blow. Yukiko was the winner!

"...ohmigosh," Kyle gasped, "Oh yes! Oh yes! You did it, hon! I knew you would! Hahaaa~!"

He got up and ran down to congratulate Yukiko.

"I admit, that was impressive," Clair sighed, "Here. Take this badge. And you better not lose in your first League match, or I'll be mad."

"Yeah, like her," Phil repeated.

"Awesome." Brad smiled and then looked far ahead. "I see the Gym now." He observed.

"Yeah, that would be the Blackthorn Gym," Phil nodded.

A respectable and mighty building, ornated with small dragon statues (much like every other building in the city) could be seen in the distance.

"Here we are." Brad said as they got to the entrance. "Have you challenged this Gym?"

"Actually, no," Phil admitted. "It's the only Johto badge I don't have."

"Yukiko-chan, I'm so proud of you, hon," Kyle said, "You really gave it your all."

"Yeah," Yukiko chuckled, "I was worried during pretty much the entire battle."

"Now all that's left is to train for the League, it seems...but for now, let's celebrate your victory. C'mon, hon, I'll take you out for lunch."

"How come?" Brad asked.
