Though Max had been alert from that point on, he was still taken by surprise when a Mudkip flew at him, landing on his head and causing him to stagger to one side.
"What the-"
"Oh hello! Sorry! I'm Katrina, what's your name? Welcome to the swamp! You are approaching Amethyst Village! How are you today? Are you tourists? Oh my, we almost never get tourists! You don't seem like you're moving!" She spoke very fast, all the while staying atop Max's head, who was too started to try and get the Mud Fish pokemon off.

Derek chuckled at the spontaneity of the act.

A drop of sweat crawled down Roy's cheek as he saw this. …I'm not too sure I like Mudkips.

Max finally spoke. "Get off my head!"
Katrina promptly jumped off of his head and onto his arm, which he frantically shook, but it was in vain. The Mudkip held on tightly. "I'm dizzy now!" Not leaving his arm, she looked at Roy. "Hello!"

Roy slowly waved at her. She's certainly one of a kind…

"Will you get off me altogether?!" Max growled.
Katrina ignored him. "You're quiet. Are you okay? Are you sad about something? No, I don't want to pry. Quiet is okay!" Then, she looked forward again. "Amethyst Village is close! Is that where you're going?"

Roy nodded; that was true.

"You'll like it! I like it! It's a nice village!"
Max gave up on trying to get Katrina off of him. He held his arm out to one side, away from himself.
Jenny smiled, amused at the little Mudkip.

Despite still being much more muddy than he would have liked, Jacob was still able to smile, the Mudkip's antics resonating with his sense of humour.

"Hey! Look, look, there's Amethyst! Amethyst Village is over there! Look! Wow, I haven't been over there in a while! You'll like it! Tourists come here for the mud! But all the tourists are Donphan!" Katrina suddenly turned to Jenny. "You! Are you a baby Donphan?"
"Um..."

As had become their fashion, Derek and Jacob traded curious and amused glances.

"...I'm the pre-evolution of Donphan... I'm a Phanpy, so I'm going to turn into a Donphan at some point..."
"Oh! Oh! That! Evolving! Wow, wow!"
Max, who had by this point completely given up on trying to get Katrina off of him, said, "So... Amethyst Village is right up ahead. That's what you said, right?"
"Yeah! It's right... It's over there..." Katrina was unable to point at anything from her position, so she jumped onto Max's head again, who scowled. Then, she pointed one paw forward. "There! It's over there! Forward!"
This kid is so annoying...

Roy sighed and shook his head, sympathizing with Max.

Jacob found no reason to consider Katrina annoying, though he was aware that he was probably the only one to think this way.

Jenny unknowingly sided with Jacob; she found the Mudkip rather amusing, though she felt a little bad for Max.
"Go to the town! The creepy-crawlies come out at night! Night is coming soon! Go, go! To the village!"
"The creepy what?" Jenny said.
"The creepy-crawlies! The... the...What did Mommy say to call them... Bugs! The bug types!"
