"I hope they'll be okay..." Jenny said.
"I'm not closing my eyes," Max replied stubbornly, "But I'll be still. It's not like I can do anything else right now."
"Yeah, me too," Jacob said, and Derek nodded.
The Audino adopted a mildly cautionary tone.
"If you keep your eyes open, the procedure will hurt a lot more than if you don't."
His question coincided perfectly with the arrival in the room of a Starmie.
"That trained expert is," the Audino told him. "It's fairly simple; we cut the lights, he uses Flash, I develop the X-ray it produces. ...Well, it's not strictly an X-ray, but it has the same effect."
"Ah." Max closed his eyes. "I thought you meant you were going to stick me with something and not looking at it would make it hurt less. Which it really doesn't."
"We don't do dishonest in this town," the Audino told him, turning down the lights in the room, then holding some kind of paper behind Max's body. "Now, if you could raise your arms..."
The Audino gave some kind of signal, then the Starmie used Flash. Notably, the Flash seemed much brighter than the standard variant of the move. This was probably what made the Starmie a 'trained professional'. Presently, the Audino took the paper to another room- a darkroom for developing images- then the Starmie restored the lights to this room.
The Audino was in the darkroom for most of ten minutes before returning with the image, which, judging by how it was being looked at, did not seem to bear good news. With a frown, the Audino handed it over to Max.
"Here. I'll let you judge for yourself."
"Thank you," he replied as he took it. One of his ribs seemed to be fractured. "Ah. I'm no medical expert, but that looks like a fracture to me. At least it's not completely broken. How would you treat that?"
"Personally, all I can do is administer basic painkillers. There is a bone specialist in Amethyst Village I could refer you to..."
"There are several bone specialists in Amethyst Village," the Starmie interjected, earning an inexplicably weary look from the Audino.
"For now, use this to ease the pain." The Audino handed him a pink spray-bottle with a purple top, then turned to give attention to Roy, while still speaking to Max. "Amethyst Village is a long way from here; it's on the other side of the island, in the marshlands."
Roy looked at the Audino, pointing at the gash in his side.
