I still don't have a banner for it, but I'm going to keep the link to this wiki in my sig' anyway. Y'know, because it means a lot to me.
Birdsong - An exploration of the human psyche at a point of being highly unstable, yet stable enough to recognise its insanity. Also officially the second-best piece of dark fiction of this year's Winter awards season and Fic of the Month of March 2013. Interested? You should be. Give it a look.
Wes worked through the whole thing in pencil. It took him a little longer than usual; he'd gotten stuck on one of the harder words once or twice.
From one of my many conversations with That Guy:
"OOOOHHHHHHHH MARIE HAD A LITTLE LAMB—*ding* Good morning!"
"…DAFFAQ?"

Tom didn't appear to have any difficulty with the crossword. It would seem that, in spite of his outward appearance and attitude, he was actually pretty well-educated...in speaking French, at least.

When Wes finished the crossword, he considered who to talk to. He didn't really know anyone in here besides Jade and Dawn... Maybe try talking to Jade again? Well, he thought, it's worth a shot. So he turned towards her―she was in the seat beside him―and said, “Hey.”
She looked up, and said, “Oh, hello! Again!”
He didn't actually think of what to talk about, so he asked, “What's it like having a Chao?”
“It's pretty nice! As long as you take good care of it, you won't regret getting one!”
“Is that so?” He'd personally been thinking about a pet Flicky... but a Chao didn't seem too bad, either.

Dawn had finished, too, and considered talking to Tom- but her confidence diminished when she tried to think of something to say to him.

Wes and Jade ended up talking about Chao for the rest of the class, and they each got to know what kind the other liked best.

Dawn, having found herself at a loss for conversation, had wound up eavesdropping on Jade's conversation with Wes, also learning more about her classmates.

The bell suddenly rung; their 5-minute break had started.
Gathering up her things, Jade said, “Well, nice talking to you, Wes! Guess I'll see you later!”
“Yeah, see ya,” he said, watching her leave. She seems pretty nice. Maybe I can talk to her again sometime, he thought, exiting the classroom himself.

The remainder of the class did similarly. Dawn wondered if she'd have chance to catch up with her brothers before- or perhaps in (timetable permitting)- her next lesson.

As he walked, Wes looked at his timetable. This break allowed students to grab something to eat at a table outside the cafeteria. Eh, might as well, he thought.

Several other students had already taken this opportunity. Already, two of Dawn's brothers- the blue and the orange- had convened and were discussing their first lessons. Like their sister, their accents were British beyond any doubt.

Wes grabbed an apple, and looked at his schedule again. He had Music after the break, in room 110.

It would seem that the subject of what lesson was next came up between the two British foxes, as they both produced their timetables. Again, their reactions seemed to say, they were in two different classes.

After a moment, the pair parted, heading in opposite directions. It would seem that the blue fox was also heading to room 110.
