As if by some bizarre coincidence, the doll leaned to one side just as a hammer fell from said shelf, almost as if aimed at Leonel's head.

Birdsong - An exploration of the human psyche at a point of being highly unstable, yet stable enough to recognise its insanity. Also officially the second-best piece of dark fiction of this year's Winter awards season and Fic of the Month of March (and technically April) 2013. Interested? You should be. Give it a look.
Also, I play Animal Crossing: New Leaf. If you don't like it, tough, and if you do, let me know. It'll be the closest thing I'll do to socialising this summer!
Naturally, he flinched backwards. Looking back at the doll, he picked it up. "OK, something fishy's going on here," he said to it, "and I'm starting to think that you're behind it all."
From one of my many conversations with That Guy:
"OOOOHHHHHHHH MARIE HAD A LITTLE LAMB—*ding* Good morning!"
"…DAFFAQ?"

Its form flopped appropriately as it was picked up, though there was something about how it looked that suggested it was somehow meeting Leonel's eyes, though physically, it wasn't. Then, in time with the words he heard, the gem hanging from its forehead began to flash.
You can think what you want.

Leonel felt conflicted. This doll was likely possessed and trying to kill him and his son. He felt like he should destroy the doll. But that would greatly upset Jeane, and he didn't want to do that. After all, she loved the doll so…
Disgusted, he cast the doll to the floor, telling himself, I'll return it to her later.

If it had not landed thusly, it had certainly righted itself into a sitting position, to watch him leave.

Leonel bumped into Travis outside the garage.
"Um, Dad, can I talk to you about something?"
"Sure thing. What is it?"
Lowering his voice, Travis said, "That doll… it's seriously creeping me out. I almost think—"
"It's possessed? Yeah, I'm starting to think that too. In fact, I'm pretty sure it tried to drop a hammer on my head just now."
"Great, a possessed doll that's trying to kill us…"
"And it belongs to Jeane, so we can't do anything about it… right now."
From one of my many conversations with That Guy:

In almost the same fashion as if she had been summoned by those very words, Jeane approached them.
"Daddy, Travis, have you seen my doll? I think I lost it."

"It's in the garage, hun," Leonel said.

She grinned.
"Thanks, Daddy!"
At that, she went to retrieve it.

"So, uh, how're we gonna, y'know… un-possess it?" Travis asked.
"I dunno," Leonel sighed. "Maybe when I finish work on my laser sword, we'll confront it and see what it does."

As Jeane walked past with the doll, it spoke to them again, with that familiar, well-timed flashing of the gem in synchronisation with its words- though Jeane seemed unable to hear it.
Maybe you will see. You shall see something, indeed.
By itself- though outside of Jeane's notice- it climbed to a position from which it could look over her shoulder, and it gave another creepy grin, this time exposing what looked like- but could not have been- jagged teeth inside the mouth it didn't actually have.

"…You better finish with your laser sword pretty soon, then," Travis told his father.
"So your sister has a doll that your and your dad think is possessed?" Otenko asked, in his jaguar form. He and Travis were in the latter's room.
"Yep," Travis, who was hanging from the ceiling, confirmed. "And it's seriously creeping me out. Like, it nearly dropped a hammer on my dad's head. And it has a grin that nearly reaches its eyes. And it has no mouth!"
"Well, I dunno what to say, man. At least your dad's working on a laser sword. Just try not to let that thing drive you insane."
Travis descended to the floor, and sighed. "Right now, I think that might be a bit hard."
Can you feel the sunshine?
Does it brighten up your day?
Don't you feel that sometimes
You just need to run away…
Travis woke up early the next morning with these lyrics ringing in his head. Although he'd never heard this song before, it seemed oddly cheery and out of place for his situation. Climbing out of bed, he opened the door and headed into the bathroom. Looking into the mirror, he saw the doll in the mirror's reflection, and turned.

It turned out that the doll was, in fact, not there. Then its voice appeared in his head.
Well? Can you feel the sunshine, Travis?

Convinced that the doll was trying to unnerve him again, he turned back towards the mirror.

In the reflection, and at an alarming speed, the doll was floating towards him, yet another wide, merciless, ridiculous grin plastered on its face.
