Thread: Pokemon Ranger - On Thin Ice

Hello everybody! I was sitting at my computer one day, taking a foray into the forums. Not these forums. Different forums. But that's entirely irrelevant. :P So anyway, I was randomly inspired to try and create a Multithread RP. What is this, you ask? Well, it's sort of like the large scale forum games. Basically, here's the premise:

Hub:There will be a Hub thread in the Start Up thread section. It ill be called "On Thin Ice - The Ranger Union". People will sign up for the RP in the usual manner in the Sign-Up thread forum. The characters who are approved are then released into the Hub, where they can interact with each other, undergo character development, buy and sell items, discover secrets, and more. This is the main thread, and, as the name suggests, is the actual Ranger Union building. It's features and shops and such will be described in greater detail in the actual thread.

Missions: Now here's were it gets different from an average RP. Rather than having an overarching plot or even some sort of goal the characters are trying to achieve, the RP is just a basic world that's been set up. Then, RPMs* and RPS* set up Missions for you to undertake. They'll be posted in a Ranger Net thread in the RPG discussion thread. A Mission listing will have the name of the client, a recommended level, party size, prerequisites, the objective of the Mission, and a Reward - money, items, experience, and other goodies. You can then form a party (group) with other players who are interested in joining the Mission, until you meet the Party Size requirement. Then, you have your characters seek each other and the client out in the Hub and you can embark on the Mission. The player who controlled the client then becomes Mission Control for the Mission. He will post a thread in the Private RP Forum for the Mission. He will control all NPCs in the Mission and guide the players toward their goal, but for the most part shouldn't directly influence the player's decisions or tell them what to do. MC will also decide when to spring battles and encounters with wild Pokemon on the characters, what items the foes and bosses drop, and if the characters find items or money on the ground. If the Mission's objective is completed, then the Mission is over and shouldn't be posted in. The characters who participated are all sent back to the Hub automatically, where they can speak with the client to claim their reward. This is the meat of the game, as you can tell. I will start a number of Missions as soon as the RP opens. These will function as tutorials and as models for future Missions. Once the initial Missions are completed, all RPS will be able to post Missions in the Ranger Net at their leisure. Normal players can create their own Missions and PM them to RPS. If they approve, then the player can post their custom Quest on the Bulletin Board and be Mission Control for it, but must obey RPS or RPMs if they are told that they are doing something wrong. RPMs can take control of or cancel player created Missions.

Adventures: Sometimes you'll want to create a story that has multiple objectives, or a bigger plot, or something, and a Mission won't cut it. That's where Adventures come in. These are basically a series of Missions that follow an overarching plot. I'll be creating two or three Adventures when the RP starts. Only RPMs can create Adventures or approve custom Adventures, so even RPS will have to PM their ideas to a RPM if they want to make an Adventure. If you are an Adventure Leader, you will organize the entire Adventure and perform all the duties of Mission Control for all the Missions within. When an Adventure's initial Mission is posted on the Bulletin Board, the Rewards section will list "unlocks participation in <insert name of Adventure here>. " Only characters who joined up for the first Mission may play through the following Missions in the Adventure, unless a player drops out. In that case that player may collect the rewards for the Missions within the Adventure that they completed and return their character to the Hub. Then, if the AL agrees, a new player may join the party to replace the lost member, or the party can continue without that member. When a Mission in an Adventure is completed, the AL tells the members whether or not they return to the Hub. If they do, they can collect their Rewards, take a break, sell unneeded Items, buy new stuff, etc., then the group can meet up and start the next Mission when they're ready. Alternatively, the client may need time to prepare the next Mission in an Adventure. (For example, if the first Mission had your party retrieve a mysterious artifact and return to the Hub, you'd give it to the client and collect your rewards. The client may say he needs time to analyze the artifact. You couldn't start the next Mission until the client informed you he was ready. These gaps could be pretty long, especially in some of the more grandiose Adventures that will have significant impacts upon the whole world, so you may want to undergo another Mission while you wait.) However, sometimes the end of one Mission drops you right into the next, and you'll get no time to return to the Hub and prepare. In that case, th AL will post a link to the next Mission thread in the closing post of the first Mission, and the players will immediately start the next Mission. If an entire Adventure is completed, you'll get all the individual Mission rewards and a large reward such as a rare item for completing the Adventure. Remember, if you dropped out or replaced a drop-out, you'll only get rewards for the Missions you completed, and you won't get the Adventure reward.

Gameplay: For this game, we will be using stats, levels, items, experience, money and the like. I believe this will improve your enjoyment of the game, not detract from it. Now I actually have been thinking on and toying with this idea for quite some time, so I believe I have a pretty good system to keep things relatively simple and fair. The stat system will contain these basic stats:

Energy: How much charge your Styler can hold. (starts at 20.)
Power: How well your Styler conveys your emotions
Assist: How well you work with Poke-Assists. You can only use Poke-Assists for Pokemon with you. Each Pokemon has an Assist Meter. Depending on which Pokemon it is, the meter will have a different number of points. The longer a Pokemon's Assist is used, the more the Meter drains. When the meter hits 0, the Pokemon is released. You can refill the Assist meter by feeding a Pokemon Berries.
Partner: This is your Partner Pokemon's level. It starts at Level 1, and has the ability "Assist". This allows it to use a Poke-Assist in battle. Every 5 levels, it's Assist increases in power. At certain levels, depending on your Partner, it will gain a Field Ability or upgrade one it has. (i.e. at Level 5, Tirtouga gains the move Rollout, which can be translated to the Tackle Field Ability At level 15, where Tirtouga would learn Aqua Jet, its Tackle is upgraded so it can pass through fiery barriers.) Field abilities usually correspond to a Pokemon's naturally learned moves, but there are exceptions.

You'll get 20 points at the beginning of the game to distribute as you see fit to those stats. Then, each time you level up, you get an amount of points to distribute again. So depending on how you spend your points, you'll be able to create a highly unique and individual character.

Experience will work this way: You start at Level One, and you'll need 100 experience points to reach Level Two. When you level up to Level Two, you'll get 5 points to spend on your stats however you want. Then you'll be Level Two. At this point, you need an additional 200 EXP to reach Level Three. (thats 300 EXP total.) And when you hit Level Three, you get 10 points to spend however you see fit. Level 4 will require 300 more EXP (600 total), but you'll get 15 points to spend. Level 5 requires 1000 total points (400 more) and you get 20 points to spend. And so on. You get 5 exp for posting as an active character (not as Mission Control) in a Mission, and an additional 5 if it's more than one paragraph. You get EXP for winning battles and capturing Pokemon as well, but you won't receive EXP if you get knocked out. In addition, you'll be unable to affect the Mission or post IC at all if you're knocked out unless someone revives you with an item, so you'll be missing out on the IC Posting exp points as well. If you have a Spare Battery on hand and a party member of yours is KOed, be a good citizen and revive him. You'd want him to do the same for you, wouldn't you? Or maybe leave a rival unconscious so you'll be able to out level him? No, that would be mean. You get EXP for defeating foes and completing Missions. The amount you get for completing the whole Mission is listed in the Reward section, and should be based on the difficulty of the Mission. When you defeat a foe, the EXP you gain is foe's level times 10.

Money is simple. You start with 100 Pokedollars. You earn Pokedollars for completing Missions and Adventures, selling items, and occasionally you'll find it on the ground or get it as a drop from a fallen foe. Dropped money is divided evenly between conscious members of the party. Money found on quests goes to the character who found it, so peeking in cracks and wading through tall grass might be a good idea. Or not, you might find an enemy instead of an item, or nothing at all. Money can be used for all sorts of things. Primarily, buying items, but it can be used to buy services and bribe people as well. You can do whatever you want with your money, so if you want to have your character, say, set up a shop or business, go ahead. You can buy from other characters things that might have been more expensive in a shop, or you couldn't find at a shop. But remember, you can only sell things you actually have or have access to.

Ranger Points are a Styler upgrade. You buy Ranger Points at the Hub, then can input them into your styler for upgrades, like elemental properties. Here are the upgrades you can buy:
Styler Grass - your styler becomes Grass type
Styler Fire - your styler becomes Fire type
Styler Water - your styler becomes Water type
etc. (One for each type)
An elemental Styler does extra damage to types it would be Super Effective against, less against NVE, etc. Can't be stacked with additional elements or any other Elemental upgrades

Power <type> - Increases damage done to <type> Pokemon, can be stacked with Resist boosts but not Styler <type> or other Power <type>s.

Resist <type> - Increases Defense against <type>. Can't be stacked with Styler <type> or additional Resist <type>s, but can be stacked with Power <type>.

High Altitude Bonus - Styler's power increases with altitude. Cannot be stacked with Subterranean Bonus.

Subterranean Bonus - Power increases when beneath the Earth's crust (not underwater). Cannot be stacked with High Altitude Bonus.

Aquatic Bonus - Styler's power increases when submerged.

Overheat Bonus - Stylers power increases with the temperature. Power is highest in deserts, volcanoes, etcetera. Cannot be stacked with Refrigeration Bonus.

Refrigeration Bonus - Styler's power increases as the temperature decreases. Power is highest on mountains, in tundras, etcetera. Cannot be stacked with Overheat Bonus.

Items can be bought at various markets and shops. A large selection of shops can be found in the Ranger Union, and you can also find shops in certain places on Missions. Use them to buy and sell items.

One-use items:
Charger - Recharges 10 points of your Styler's energy. Costs 10 Pokedollars.
Supercharger - Recharges 25 points of your Styler's energy. Costs 50 Pokedollars.
Oran Berry - Refills a Pokemon's Assist meter by 1. Costs 15 Pokedollars.
Sitrus Berry - Refills a Pokemon's Assist meter by 3. Costs 50 Pokedollars.
Leppa Berry - Completely fills a Pokemon's Assist meter. Costs 100 Pokedollars.
Lum Berry - Cures a Pokemon's Status Condition. Costs 25 Pokedollars.
Spare Battery - Reactivates a depleted Styler. Costs 100 Pokedollars.
Repair Kit - Fixes any Styler Abnormalities. Costs 20 Pokedollars.

Apps - These Apps can be downloaded onto your Styler to be used on your Missions.
Area Map - A map of 1 area. Collecting these may become a good idea. Cost varies, but is usually around 50 Pokedollars.
Scanner - Allows you to scan an area for hidden items and such. It will reveal all loose items and alert you to the location of items that are buried, in chests, etc. 100 Pokedollars.
Compass - Prevents you from becoming disoriented in mazes and such, always know your way. 150 Pokedollars.
Browser - Allows you to get detailed information on any and all Pokemon you see. 200 Pokedollars.
Encyclopedia - Allows you to get detailed information on landmarks, items, objects, important people, and more.
More apps may be added eventually.

Treasure - This stuff sells well, but it's useless.
Nugget - 1000 Pokedollars.
Sphere - 750 Pokedollars
Plate - 500 Pokedollars
Shard - 250 Pokedollars

Battling: Here's where it gets complicated. When a battle starts, MC posts a list of enemies, their level, and their HP. A list of party members participating in the battle should also be posted, showing how much HP each character has, what Pokemon they have with them, etc. If any party member has a Browser, the enemies moves, what they do, and what item will be dropped by each is also listed.

Each player states which target they will be looping. MC then rolls a pair of dice (or uses a random number generator) for each player's action to determine its degree of success. If 1-3 is rolled, then that number is multiplied by the character's Power stat. That is how many loops are put around the Pokemon. If 4-6 is rolled, then the player goes into Power Charge and their next attack does damage equal to number rolled (any number, even 4-12) times Power plus 4, 5, or 6, depending on which you just rolled. This is useful, but makes you give up a turn, so it can be a hindrance. If 7 is rolled, the player scores an Emotional Bond with the Pokemon and it is automatically captured/released. If the number of loops the Pokemon currently has is over or equal to it's HP, then the Pokemon is captured. It is either added to the player who completed the final loop's party or released, depending on the situation. If it hasn't been fully captured, then MC deducts the number of Loops from the Pokemon's HP. If 8, 9, 10 or 12 is rolled, the player takes an Attack from the Pokemon. If 11 is rolled, the player takes a Power Attack, which is more powerful and might have additional effects like splash damage and Styler Abnormalities.

Poke Assists can be used, too. In that case, the player states that they want to use a Poke Assist, which of their Party Pokemon they want to use, and how many points they want to use. The amount of points spent times the number you have for your Assist stat is the amount of damage you deal, however type advantages work here just like in the normal games, so using a SE Poke-Assist would mean 2(pn) where p represents the points you spent and n represents the number MC rolled. Of course, type disadvantages apply too, and some advantages/disadvantages are times four or divided by four, not 2. If a Pokemon's Assist Meter is drained, it is released.

Enemies attack when you roll an 8-12. Their standard attack does damage equal to the number they rolled plus their level. The Power Attack has a unique effect depending on what it is, and is based on a move the Pokemon would know at the level they're at. Enemies automatically use their standard attack on you if they aren't targeted by a player. (You don't have to hit them, just target them.)

You can also use an item or attempt to flee from a battle. Items use up 1 turn and do the same things in-battle that they'd do outside of it. If you flee, a coin is flipped. Heads you succeed, tails you fail.

(As you can see, Kate had already taken damage capturing another Slakoth before this battle. But she has the Lum Berry Slakoth always drops in her inventory. Also, one of the Rangers must have a Browser App installed, as the Power Attack and Drop of each enemy is listed.)

Kate posts: I'll use my Slakoth's Poke Assist for 1 point on Slakoth 2.

MC then rolls dice. He rolls a 3 for Kellyn, so 3 times 10, being 30, captures that Slakoth and adds it to Kellyn's party. Kate's 5 in Assist is multiplied by Slakoth's 1 Assist point for 5 damage. Slakoth only has 1 point, as you can see in Kate's inventory, so it does 5 damage to Slakoth 2 and the Slakoth Kate is using is released. Slakoth 3 gets a free attack, so MC uses a RNG to decide which player to attack. It says 2, and Kate was listed second on the Player list, so he targets Kate with the free attack. He rolls a dice and gets a 10. Kate is knocked out.
MC posts the results like so:

(story clip): Kellyn fiercely looped the first Slakoth with his Styler, completing all 10 loops required to capture it. He picked up the Lum Berry it dropped. Kate's Slakoth fiercely scratched the second Slakoth. "Good job, Slakoth!" she called out to it as it ran away into the forest. However, while she was dostracted the third enemy clawed at the Capture Disc of her Styler, depleting it of all its energy!

You play as a young Pokemon Ranger. You start with a simple Styler and can upgrade it as you go on missions, help citizens, and earn Pokedollars and Ranger Points. Just have fun with the world. The rules are the standard BMGf Roleplay rules - no godmodding, metagaming, tennising, keep it PG-13, etcetera. Also, obey the staff.of this roleplay and don't try to cheat the system. We will eventually catch you and cheaters will be expelled from the roleplay. Finally, you can't play as a character on a Mission where you'll be MC. Role Play Moderator(RPM): This is like a GM. I am one, and I want one more.

Later on you'll also need to post Missions for beginners and low-leveled players as well as higher leveled characters who have been playing for a while

Role Play Staff(RPS): Since this will be a massive RPG if it works, two people won't be enough to fully handle it, as we don't want people sitting around at a shop for days waiting for a transaction to be approved, for example, so the RPS will help out the RPMs and help keep everything under control.

Summary of Stuff: You sign up here. You then go to the Hub in the Start Up thread forum where you can do pretty much whatever you want. You check the Ranger Net in the RPG Discussion section when you want to go on a Mission or Adventure, then form a group with other players who will be going with you and play the Mission in the Private Role Play section. RPMs and RPS will be there to keep everything civil. You'll have to keep track of your own stats and exp and such, but EXP will only come in multiples of 5 and 10 to keep it easy on you.

Personality: Adrian often looks at things negatively. While his general outlook on life is rather positive, he tends to give up hope rather easily. Despite that, in desirable situations, Adrian often likes to joke around, and is surprisingly confident.
History(Optional): Adrian was born in Opelucid City, as the great-nephew of the gym leader Drayden. However, Adrian moved to Iccirus City soon after. Adrian grew up around Pokémon trainers, and wanted to be one. So, at age ten, he flew to Nuvema Town, and got a Tepig from Professor Juniper. He later challenged Cress, and won, despite the type disadvantage. However, he longed for Iccirus City, and returned shortly after defeating Lenora. He gave Tepig to his brother, and decided to do something else. Then he met Slider. After saving Slider, Adrian was visited by a renowned Pokémon Ranger, who wanted to recruit Adrian, after witnessing the Pawniard event. Thus, Adrian is where he is now.

They drove away with him, but Adrian clang to the back of the car, and pulled Slider out. Adrian left, but Slider followed him for weeks.
