Question Problem with my mom's laptop

Okay, my mom's laptop has been having some serious problems the last few weeks. They are SO bad, my dad had to reinstall Windows on her PC!

It turned out her PC had malware, but we have no clue how she got it. She has Vista on in, and Vista is weak on virus protection, but we still have no idea how she got it.

She can go on it now with ease, but how can I help my mom prevent it in the future. What caused her virus, anyways?

My mom has a Gateway laptop, with Vista Home Premium on it, 3 GB of memory, 32-bit, and has Malwarebytes and McAfee, with Action Center and Windows Firewall.

With all that beefed-up PC protection, what happened?

I can't help much, but I know one thing: McAfee is NOT a good protection against viruses. If you want better security, I recommend switching to Avast virus protection.

While I can't tell you what exactly to do, I can also say McAfee is, well, crap. I use Kaspersky and it's never let me down like this. I'd recommend taking it to a technician if you're ever in doubt from not on, if you can. =/ We had to wipe my laptop a couple of years ago as there was a virus we just couldn't get to. Once something's in, it's usually a pain to get rid of it.

Use your restore disks or use the restore partition. If that doesn't work, back up your data and reinstall with a normal vista disc and the key on the bottom of your laptop.

Not all anti-virus software is created equal, if users offer you a better (in their opinion) alternative, you don't need to jump down their throats.

Also, no one is forcing you to change and this isn't a thread for anti-virus debates, either.
